So Clive and I decided to carry on our travel plans, so we arrived in Kochi very tired not only from the journey but from all the stresses of London. We stayed in fort Kochi which was a very old portuguesse style port. With an amazing warren of spice markets and scent stalls. Ofcourse in true traveller style we got taken for a ride by a rickshaw driver litterally! and in an afternoon we had spent well over our budget and had filled the rickshaw drivers pocket in backhanders from the stores but we had fun and we bought some amazing herbs and spices for the fraction of the price back home. We also went to see a very traditional acting and mime performance in Kerala called Katakhali which was fantastic especially as the female lead ... read more

We arrived in sweltering Hanoi at about 11am on the overnight sleeper. Then jumped straight on a bus to the north to Cat Ba, whilst on the way the Bus driver drove like a mad man and took out a motor cyclist; the bus only slowed down a bit, the two people stood up dusted themselves off like nothing happened got on their bike and the bus just hooted and drove on- its craziness I tell you. We arrived in Halong Bay which is like Blackpool for the Vietnemese big seafront restauraunts and huge stages for yes you guessed it Kareoke. There are families and kids everywhere all shouting at each other wearing beach clothes from the 80's. The next day we went to the Junk boat harbour to try and jump on a boat to ... read more

So after we said goodbye to the easy riders we had a mooch around Hoi An which is such a beautifull place it is like something out of a movie, lanterns hanging everywhere, coloured buildings, cobbled streets on a river and tailors shops everywhere. Clive had to keep me on a tight budget otherwise I would have run wild like a kid in a candy shop I wanted every lantern in every colour and every size, but like a good girl I settled for one pink one green and one orange. We also all went to a tailor shop it would have been rude not to Clive got his wedding suit made up and I did a bit of designing and drove the girls loopy in there as they kept showing me pictures from the next ... read more

So we arrive in Da Lat after a +/-4hr drive. We made friends with a couple from Guernsey, Rob and Nadia very cool people who we ended up travelling through the whole of Vietnam with, we were very sad to leave them at the end. We arrived quite late so we only had a few hrs to potter around Kat and I had both been looking foward to Da Lat as it was supposed to be Kitch central. Swan peddelos on the Lake and fair rides etc. However on our way on to town we got talking to a biker guy called Tan. He and his friend Quan did motorbike tours through central Vietnam. At first we thought yeah right get on the back of a motorbike with our big rucksacs and go off into the ... read more

Well we finally arived in HCM,tired bur excited Kat and I have both been looking foward to Nam. As to be expected the city was nuts but in a good way. We started by getting of the bus and making our way to a bar called Guns n Roses, yep welcome to the jungle baby. I left Kat with the bags and went missioning for suitable accomadation, by the time I returned Kat had made friends with the barmaid and was teaching her English. We spent the rest of the day walking around checking out the markets and trying not to get killed every time we crossed the road. Fear Factor ha! Try crossing the a four lane road at peak hour in HCM. We also had our first cup of Vietnam coffee, pure rocket fuel ... read more

So Kat and I finished in the capital, a city of contridictions more poor than rich with every one trying to make a buck but always with a smile. There were some streets that had piles of garbage and some streets lined with old trees. Phnom Phen was very emtional as we spent a day visiting the killing fields and S21 Prison, a brutal reminder how savage humankind can be . What made it even more poignant was that it was Cambodians against each other, how friends, neighbours even family members could not be trusted. We also found it odd that other tourists would take photos of the memmorial, a stupa filled with remains of some the victims of the fields. It it seemed a bit macarbe but thats just our opinion. The city is filled ... read more

We decided we needed a bit of Rn R so we haeded straight to the beach, this travelling thing can get a bit tiring. We found a really cool place, which was a little out of our budget but worth it. We were the only people staying there as they had just bought the resort and were not really open. We had a place right on the beach, just what the doctor ordered. Nothing like falling asleep with ocean rasping on the sand. We stayed for three days, chilled swam did nothing really. Great! Kat made a friend with a little girl Ean, Kat designed some earrings and Ean whipped them togther quick stix. We then made our way up to the capital our last stop before Vietnam. ... read more

July 20th 2006

We left Siem Riep early in the morning our pick up to the ferry the usual asian way, packed to capacity and still we still seemed to have space for more. The journey at least was intresting and short. We arrived at the dock and filed on to the boat like good sheep. Sometimes when travelling the popular routes you do feel like a sheep, shunted from one point to the other. The boat didn't fail to dissapoint, small and crowded. We made our way to the back as it had more space why because it had the old smokey diesel engine, duh! We pottered through the village yes a real village on the water, resteraunts, schools even the livestock. After passing a few more villages we were on open water, vast open water in fact the ... read more

July 18th 2006

We left Kratie and made our way towards Siem Riep another journey that took awhile, surprise. We eventually made it, we managed to orginise a motor taxi for the next days temple viewing. We left at about six in the morning to make our way to the river Lingas, this journey took about 3 hrs in total. It was bumpy, which did not help Kats dickie belly but it was alot of fun and intresting, passing through little farming hamlets with all the children shouting hello. The river lingas are carvings in the river bed which blessed the water that runs over them, this blessed water then ran into the valley and rice paddys, ensureing a good harvest. It was about half an hour trek in to the jungle, of course uphill. The whole place felt ... read more

We crossed the border pretty easily with a 1 dollar bribe on either side. We had to cross a river no great shakes except on the way to the boat a motorbike loaded with a huge hog rides past us. I was even more impressed when we relise the pig was still alive. It started squeeling and didnt stop untill we got to the other side. Was a horrible sound. We evetually got to Kratie. Woke up the next mornig and missioned up the river to go and see the rare Irwaddy dolphins. It was so serene chugging on the river folling the dolphins. we made two new friends Nick and Samantha. Doing amazing trip before moving to London. Kratie is a very small untouristic place, but i dont think it will be long before it ... read more
