Part 2: I made friends with 3 Russian girls who were teaching Russian at Khovd University. They all live in a town called Barnaul, about 4-5 hours south of Novosibirsk and when they left Khovd, I promised to visit. Sasha, the girl we’d be staying with arranged for her friends to pick us up from the train station and drive us to the bus station, where they put us on a bus to Barnaul. I have no idea how we would have figured it out without them, so we were all very grateful. We arrived to Barnaul to an excited Sasha who was baring small gifts for all of us. She had arranged a vehicle to take our bags to her home so we could hit the town. Sasha speaks very little English, so she also ... read more

Part 1: Things began a little rough, as we began the trip in Mongolia. The first time Kailie arrived in Mongolia, Mongolian International Air Transport (MIAT), the famed Mongolian carrier food poisoned her. This time around, she skipped the meal but they lost her luggage. This created a bad situation because she arrived just before midnight on the 8th and we had tickets to leave at 9:10pm on the 9th. We called the following morning to find out the luggage that was promised to arrive at 10am, hadn’t arrived. I could say that this came as a surprise but nothing could be further from the truth. The three of us, being Cassandra, Kailie and I decided it was best for Cassandra and I to head out and Kailie could catch the train the next day to ... read more

We woke extra early this morning to make sure we had time to eat breakfast and make it to the pier in time for the earliest ferry of the day. All went well until the ferry was 45 minutes late...how does this happen? It's a daily ferry with the same schedule every single day, the water was almost like glass today, yet somehow we were 45 minutes late! I'd like to break away from my complaints for a moment and tell a story I heard from my friend Michael, a fellow travel, that directly relates to this experience. Michael was taking an overnight train somewhere in Thailand, according to the set schedule the train left at 9pm and arrived the following morning at 9am. He asked one of the train employees the following morning what time ... read more

This trip started with rushing through dinner and running to get a taxi to get to the pier just to find out that we were an hour early. Like many other situations during this trip, it was not our fault, we were lied to. By arriving early we would end up spending money at the local businesses that our booking agent was friends with. It really didn't take long to discover this reoccurring situation. During our hour, I sat there and even though I wanted to buy some snacks or a beer I held out. We boarded our night boat in an unsafe and unorganized fashion as usual that could've easily ended in someone falling off the narrow boarding plank into the ocean with all their belongings. The first thing I though of upon entry into ... read more

After a 1.5 hour ferry ride we arrived on Koh Tao. Koh in Thai means island and Tao means turtle, so Turtle Island. I'm not sure why because I never saw a turtle there but I guess that doesn't mean that there weren't any. Upon arrival to the island we found accommodations on one of the three main beaches called, Sairee Beach. I thought it may be a bad idea initially because it's pronounced "sorry," but it all turned out okay. One of the things Kailie and I really liked about this particular resort is that it had a dive shop on location so we could be fitted for all our equipment and be ready to dive in the morning. We signed up for a two tank morning dive then headed out for lunch. After lunch ... read more

We woke early to catch our bus to Bangkok and were a little under the weather because of the previous nights festivities. Plus, we were going in with all a whole arsenal of horror stories that we had heard about this particular journey. I personally didn't think it was as bad as what I'd heard but then again, I'd been hearing it for about a month and we were in Cambodia. We got on and the bus was like 90 degrees at 8am, I asked the driver if the A/C worked and he said no. This was a little discouraging but we were in Cambodia and the windows did roll down. This did however make me wonder what the letters VIP stood for on our VIP Bus ticket. I fell asleep on the bus because I ... read more

Today we took a bus from Phnom Penh and arrived at the sister guesthouse to the one we stayed in, in Phnom Penh. Seim Reap is a really cool city but there is no water anywhere around it and it's HOT. My forearms were literally sweating and on top of feeling nasty from that, it's the dustiest place I've ever been. I would take a shower, step outside and instantly feel filthy! We stopped in a place called Dead Fish for dinner because they had a live band. This place was great, it was build inside what looked to have been an old barn and there were like 15 different levels all at different heights, so everyone could see the band in the middle of the restaurant. It was very open inside and had a great ... read more

Phnom Penh was a pretty cool city but there was really nothing to see if you stayed more than 1.5 days. So that is exactly what we did. We arrived in Phnom Penh late after a long bus ride from Saigon. We found accommodations for the night and ate dinner. Everyone we met told us to watch a movie called “The Killing Fields,” to get a better idea of what they were before we went, so we popped the movie in at the hostel and watched it before going to bed. We woke fairly early and headed to the Killing Fields the next morning. It was pretty intense to hear what happened here and why. In the mid 70’s a man by the name of Pol Pot started an organization called Khmer Rouge and they were ... read more

Let me begin by clarifying that Saigon is the same location as Ho Chi Minh City. All the locals still call it Saigon but Vietnam had a famous leader named Ho Chi Minh who felt the need to change the name of this city from Saigon to his own name. I'll refer to it as the locals do because I'm too lazy to type out the whole name. The two main reasons we chose to stop in Saigon was for the War Remnants Museum and the Cu Chi tunnels. We walked to the War Remnants Museum our second day in town, we figured it was better than taking a cab or a tuk tuk so we could see some things along the way. We stopped at the post office to mail some things home then headed ... read more

So this is the first time that I've ever seen or ridden on a sleeper bus. The bus actually had beds fully equipped with a pillow and blanket along with functioning air conditioning and a window that opened. I'm not an engineer but I did find three major flaws with the sleeper buses construction that I'd like to take a moment to point out. One, when I was laying on my side the screenless window was at eye level and opened about a foot and a half. I had to shut the window because I almost lost my pillow on the freeway. Two, the seats were made out of pleather and were not completely horizontal, they were angled up so that my head was always higher than my feet. When the bus driver would slam on ... read more
