I'm a 24 year old American male. I have lived in Fairbanks, Alaska for 6 years now, after moving here from Michigan in 1999. I am pursuing a masters degree in Northern Studies (Circumpolar Studies) from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I also work for Toolik Field Station, a flagship research station in Arctic Alaska. I love to travel, and thought a blog like this could help people keep track of me

So we are back in the big city, Bangkok. We took to overnight train last night, and got in early this morning, ready to play some Ultimate Frisbee. For those who do not know, we are playing in the 2006 Bangkok Ultimate Hat Tournament this weekend. Two hundred players from around the world ready to play some friz under the burning sun. We are quite excited about it. The Alaskan winter doesn't have me in the best shape for such an event, but I'll do my best to represent. Hopefully I'll get some good pictures. I've been pretty bad about taking them lately. So, its the tournament this weekend and the beach for a week afterwords. I'm ready. The north of Thailand was great, we met a lot of people, saw a bit of what many ... read more

Okay, so I haven't been so great at updating my blog. First of all, I have been incredibly surprised at how easy it is to travel around here. It's not like Europe where everyone speaks perfect English, and in a way this almost makes it easier. Both parties in a transaction kind of resort back to a more primal form of communication, stressing the most important information, and getting the job done quite efficiently. That said, quite a few people do speak English. Its definitely the default language, after Thai of course, of the crazy mix of people wandering around here. And the country seems quite safe. I feel safer here than in any city in the US, as far as crime goes anyway. The bus/transportation situation on the other hand is a different story. As ... read more

While talking with people lately about my upcoming travels I have entertained many questions about where I am going, what I will be doing, and the like, so I came up with this idea of a blog to keep everyone up my travels. It will also allow my mother to keep track of me, or at least have more information to help focus her worries and fears. I'm not exactly sure what form this blog will take. I imagine it having some simple narrative about where I am and what I am doing, as well as some pictures, and maybe, if you are lucky and I am ambitious, some insight and reflection on my part. We'll see. I can't promise that I'll have anything especially interesting or profound to say, or that I will be overly ... read more
