The Great Escape

We are a family of four from Perth Western Australia about to head off on a family trip for 3 months backpacking around Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. I have finally earnt my Long Service Leave from my work and the kids are at a great age to take a break from school.
It has been quite a few years since we have travelled on the cheap but we are really looking forward to getting out of our comfort zones and seeing if we are still up to it.

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phuket July 23rd 2010

I have a confession to make. I am writing about this part of our adventure in Thailand, from the lounge room of our home in Perth. Yes I was that slack and laid back in R&R mode that I just stopped adding to the blog. But rest assured my memories of our adventure will never fade as I now use them, when getting shitty at work, to go to a happy place! So I now continue our adventure in Thailand.... Haad Yuan will always be tough to beat. Just like Hue was in Vietnam, after we had such a great time in Hoi An. And since it had been 7 years since Maureen and I were last in Phuket, we didn’t quite know what to expect. 'Same same but different', as the saying goes. While we ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan July 5th 2010

After a blissful week on the beach at Samui, we decided to head over to Ko Pha -Ngan to try and find something a little more mellow and maybe not so expensive. Koh Samui was proving hard work on $100And a day but we always new that would be the case. It was 16 years since I had been to Samui and the changes were incredible. A lovely spot still but probably not we are looking for in Thailand. We had met a nice guy in Otres Beach in Cambodia that had told us about a great bay in Koh Phangan. We had always planned to stay on the island but had in mind to stay at a different bay. Chris raved about a bay called Haad Yuan that is on the east coast and really ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui June 30th 2010

Well as you know its been a while since we made an entry. That's because we are in beach bum mode. After our final night in Hanoi, staying at the Splendid Star Hotel (www.splendidstarhotel.com) next to the large Catholic church, we caught a quick flight to Bangkok. The hotel, by the way is an excellent hotel and I would recommend it highly. You get a great breakfast provided and the room we had was massive with beautiful decor, Air con, large screen TV and computer with Internet in the room. Back to the landing in Bangkok. From here we had to catch a taxi to the train station to pick up the overnight train tickets we had booked online earlier in the adventure. This was thru the new booking service that Thai Railway offers via email. You ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Northwest » Lao Cai » Sapa June 21st 2010

So after the hot as hell day in Hanoi we caught the overnight train to Sapa. Sapa is in the northwest of Vietnam and has spectacular mountain scenery with the terraced hillsides that you see in those amazing photographs and Maureen and I were looking forward to it. The night train was nice and clean but again, the tour operator who sorted most of our travel from way back in Nha Trang never quite dotted her I's or crossed her T's. She said that the bunks were larger than the main trains and that to save money it would be fine to top and tail with the kids in just 2 beds instead of 4. Bad mistake. It was cramped and Tane who bunked with me said that he did not sleep well. At least he ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Northeast » Quang Ninh » Halong Bay June 17th 2010

At 8.45am the tour company for the trip and boat to Halong Bay picked us up. We were the first ones so got the best seats and then proceeded to pick up the rest of the people. The distance to Halong from Hanoi is only about 160km but it takes about 4 hours. This was slow as and seemed to be everyones complaint but I finally noticed on the return trip, a road sign which showed how fast cars, minivans, trucks and buses are aloud to go. It was 70k per hour for our van which explained the nanna driving. When we arrived at the port we were wisked to a section of the carpark amongst hundreds of other tourists and our guide met us and took us to the transfer boat. His name was Thai ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi June 14th 2010

After our slack movie day in Hue we left the night of the 11th to catch the sleeper to Hanoi. As I said before this was something I was starting to dread based on our previous experience of the train. Plus I had a bit of a dodgy gut and not sure if I could abstain from using the toilet for 11 hours. Due to my very acute sense of smell, I find that it better to avoid these situations. As much as I love travel this is one aspect that I find hard to get over. I don't mind the starter blocks but they have to be clean. That stinky we wee smell gets stuck in your throat for hours. Distressing. We boarded the train that night at Hue and much to our pleasant surprise ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Thua Thien - Huế » Hué June 11th 2010

From Hoi An to get on the train you need to travel to Danang. This is about a 30 min taxi drive and is only $12 in a private car. We had booked the same guy that picked us up when we arrived from Nah Trang because he was such a good driver. Well, apparently not everyday! Must have been having an off one. The coastal stretch along China Beach is seeing some major development. Greg Norman is even flogging some Golf Resort Complex and many other international chains have started big projects. They all llok five star and really it is not surprising. There is an international airport at Danang, the beach is awesome and famous and Hoi An is only 1/2 an hour away. A winning combination on all fronts. We will be back ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An June 9th 2010

So on the 4th, after our sleeper train from Nha Trang (which was disgusting) we arrived into Danang to meet our transfer ride to Hoi An (approx 40mins) and hit the ground running. We were dropped off at a cafe while Maureen searched the street for accommodation. The cafe was called Light Cafe and they served the best fried spring rolls so far and also delicious Mango shakes! The owner is called 'Mamma' and took a shine to Ella straight away. We went there a few times during our stay. Maureen came back with two places within 30metres of us and both were excellent deals but one manager was similar to Basil Fawlty- rude and arrogant so he lost out. We ended up at the Long Life Hotel. This offered two beds, a spa (in the room), ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Khanh Hoa » Nha Trang June 2nd 2010

So Lyndon ended off with us in HCMC and from there we were to go to Dalt which is inland and much cooler. We had read the bus trip was very scenic but also very windy. We had even looked at the expense of flying to avoid it, however, we had met people in Cambodia that had said that if we were going to go to Sapa, give Dalat a miss. Everyone had been saying how great Hue was so we changed the schedule and cut off Dalat and and added in Hue. This gave us a more streamlined path of travel and an extra day in Hanoi for shopping. We had wanted to go to Nah Trang by sleeper train but it was all booked up as the month of June is school holidays for ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ba Ria - Vung Tau » Vung Tau May 30th 2010

Once we arrived in Vung Tau we realised that on the weekends this place is pretty full and it would have helped us if we had booked accomodation ahead of schedule but that would have been too easy. We went to a bar called Belly's as this was reccomended to us by some friends. Belly is an Aussie and a lot of the patrons are oil rig workers from Oz working in Vietnam and also some old geezers who 'find' it easier for certain ladies to like them! Unfortunately Belly was away on a motor cycle holiday but his number one bar girl called Luen was still able to help us find great accomodation. We stayed at a place called Anh Binh 2 which had two bedrooms and was self catered. Its a bit more expensive than ... read more
