Since my ankle was still very sore today, I wanted to take it easy and rest it for a day or two. I had given thought to a boat tour on the Lake to some other glaciers, so I went ahead and did it today. It was a nice sized catamaran and full of people. We first went to the Spegazzini Glacier. The day was sunny and beautiful for the most part. The clouds come and go around the mountains, causing it to be dark and overcast one minute, and sunny the next. Also, I wanted to mention the water in the lake. From El Calafate, it looks pretty blue, but it is really a milky-gray-blue color that is so hard to describe. The glaciers bring so much microscopic sediment into the lake that the sediment ... read more

Oh my heck! This trip just gets better each day. Today was the Big Ice hike on the Perito Moreno Glacier. This is the reason that I am down here in Patagonia. When I start to plan my trips, I pick up tour guide books and come up with very broad strokes of where I want to go and what I would like to see. From there, I purchase air tickets in and out. That gives a good base of what I can do and then I start picking the who, what, when, where and why. Actually, since I travel alone, it isn't so much about the who as it is the other 4. Big Ice was the why and El Calafate, Patagonia was the where. I can honestly say that I had never heard of ... read more

Yesterday was a day full of travel; lots of hurrying, lots of waiting, lots of sitting and wondering what the heck was going on. My taxi driver sent someone else to pick me up today, but she was early and very nice. We left the hotel at 9 and made it to the airport on time. I thought that the travel gods were smiling upon me today- the plane was on time and they checked my 2nd bag for free. It was off to a great start. As we approached Buenos Aires, the cloud cover grew thicker and more ominous. Heck I wasn't worried, I was only there for a couple hours and didn't care if it was raining there; that would be my worry the following week. Oops, my bad. We circled BA for over ... read more

Well, today's title refers to all that I have done here so far. At home I am a quiet, stay at home kind of person. I would never dream of zip lining, rappelling, taking a helicopter ride or whatnot, but here all that has changed. If it sounds fun, I am on it like (insert your own metaphor here, this is a family blog.) In other words, the active Jeannie is on the loose here. My driver picked me up at 8 again this morning. We went through immigrations to go to the Bazil side of the Falls. I knew that they were not going to be as extensive as the Argentine side, but I knew I would find some good views and things to do. We were there a half hour before the Park opened, ... read more

Ok, all I can say is this was seriously some of the most fun I have had in years! I will bounce around a little in the order of the story, but please, hang in there because today was so fricken awesome I can barely contain myself. Usually when I travel I am fine just sitting here after the fact, writing my blog; however, today I have the overwhelming urge to pick up the phone and tell everyone about it in person. It was really, truly that fun. But, since my phone doesn't have an international plan and is turned off until I return home, I will have to try to convey my experiences in the written form. And again, this is the truth, I am laying in a hammock on my private screened porch in ... read more

Yeah, I know. Two blogs in a row with cheesy titles. I guess I am on a roll here. Since I had seen the major sights that I wanted to see, I decided to take a 2 hour cruise around Guanabara Bay. There is something relaxing about a short cruise and quite honestly I was looking forward to just sitting for a while. I put on some walking miles over the past two days. Somehow I didn't plan my time well this morning, so skipped breakfast and coffee and high tailed it to the Metro station. It was an easy trip to the station, but out of the station I ran into what happens so often here. No signs. The flyer said to take the footbridge to the marina. That was all well and good, but ... read more

Ok now, please stop shaking your heads. There are 2 very good reasons for today's blog title. 1. If you know me, you know what a dork I can be and 2. After walking the entire length of Copacabana Beach, I feel it is my duty to get you singing that song. I know it was running through my head way way too much on my walk. But, I digress, so let's start at the very beginning shall we? (Oh help me, now I have Julie Andrews singing the intro to Do Re Mi in my head. That certainly wasn't intentional, sigh.) After a nice breakfast in the hotel, I headed back to the subway and took it to the proper station. After yesterday's dilemma of not know what train to take, I made a point ... read more

It is Tuesday night in Rio and I am about ready to call it a day. I left the house yesterday at 7 AM and spent the next 26 hours traveling. It was a very nice trip, so I can't complain, although I did have a couple moments that were more "Uh oh" than "Ah ha." Having learned from my money woes in Spain, I tucked some extra cash and a credit card in a book in my carry on. As I was finishing my packing, I moved the Brazil guidebook to my check through. On the way to the airport, I realized that I had tucked money in it, so went frantically searching for it when the van stopped to pick up another passenger. The book was there, but no money. Naturally I thought that ... read more

Las Vegas is known for excess, hence the name Sin City as well as the catch phrase "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." I was able to attend a work conference and trade show there this week and let me tell you, it was a challenge to stay on this side of excess. Perhaps since I was there in a work capacity it was a little easier for me, yet I still had a great time. It's a quick trip to Las Vegas from the Bay Area. There is nothing like starting a trip off with a nice Hefeweizen and pizza before boarding the aircraft. Once off the plane, I was disappointed that no one was playing the slot machines scattered throughout the terminal. The bing bing bing is always a welcome sound of what's ... read more

Sometimes I lost sight of the fact that I live in an area that is full of incredible day trips. It is often only when a friend comes to visit, or I am included in a group outing that I take advantage of these places that are really destinations. This is a quick blog about 2 recent wonderful trips. A very good friend came to visit me from Canada. With my work schedule, I didn't have a lot of free time to spend with him, so I picked one of my favorite places to spend an afternoon- the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It's a quick and easy drive to Monterey from San Jose. The route I always take goes through Gilroy, the garlic capital of the world and then alongside fields of artichokes and other farm produce. ... read more
