As I mentioned in my last post there was something wierd going on when we arrived in Buenos Aires. When checking in the agent could not print out our boarding passes for the follow-on flight from Lima, Peru to Los Angeles. She told us the flight was closed and I suggested that we go get dinner then come back to get our passes. After a great meal of McDonalds (the restaurant had the exact same things we had been eating for 30 days) we went back to the LAN counter and they printed our boarding passes. No mention of anything wrong so we got on-board and headed to Lima. Found our gate number and noticed that the flight was delayed. When we arrived at Gate 21 there were security barriers setup to keep people away from ... read more

Summer sure has arrived. Temperatures have been in the mid to high 70s for the past week and this weekend it is going to be near 80. Wow! Even with these conditions smog is not a real problem. A little bit of haze is visible but nothing that restricts the view. Went out to Refugio Neumeyer last Friday. Hiked 7.5 miles along a dirt road and made it to the refugio in about 2.5 hours. Unfortunately the real trails start at the Refugio but I was out of time so will pass on this today. Had a great pizza at El Mundo restaurant that specializes in these. Good value at reasonable prices. Saturday was moving day as our time in the apartment ended. The apartment was well worth the price, making it a convenient place to ... read more

Trail ratings are very subjective and vary from country to country. Well the hike we did on Sat & Sun was certainly in the difficult category. The first photo I post shows the entire route along a sharp ridge from the top of the cable car + chair lift we rode to the ending point at the crossroads to two different mountain lodges. The trail was amongst volcanic rocks interspersed with rocky chutes of very loose pebbles. Add on a 35lb pack and it was tough!! I've included a few shots of the trail itself and 2000 feet below, the valley. I've estimated the length of this trail at about 2.5 to 3.0 miles and it took us 2 1/2 hours. Then the fun began as we had to climb down through the volcanic layer to ... read more

Mt. Tronador is about 2 1/2 hours by bus from town and Michiko decided not to do the trip up to Refugio Otto Meiling, so I caught an early morning bus to Pampa Linda. Got my informational pass and started on the 5 hours trek from 1050m to the refugio that is at 2000m. Not too difficult and I even threw in a 1 hour sidetrip to see the base of the Overno Glacier. As I was approaching the base of the mounbtain I heard a loud crack and knew that The Thunderer (literal translation of Tronador) was active and I quickly drew out my camera and took two photos of a massive icefall. This is not unusual but you have to be there to experience the actual occurance. I took a total of 5 1/2 ... read more

Events from February 11th. Took a local bus out to the Llao Llao Hotel which is similiar to the big hotel in Banff, Canada. It sits on a hill and dominates that area. But we were not interested in seeing the hotel but the regional park Llao Llao where we heard that there were a lot of orchids. We walked through the area for over 4 1/2 hours and saw many orchids along with a variety of other flowers. After the many people in the streets of Bariloche the relative quiet of the park was welcomed. We were hoping to take a boat back to town but they do not run in that direction. Photos from this day are attached. February 12th found us on a bus to Cerro Cathedral which is the wintertime ski center ... read more

What is that outside? By god the sun does shine in Western Argentina. After one week here in Bariloche the low clouds and rain have been replaced by high clouds, low winds and no wind in the forecast. Temps got up to close 70 and for the next few days will be around 76. more like normal. Spent the day gathering information for our future treks and also shopping at various stores for needed food and supplies. Boy are the prices for consumer goods high. Food in restaurants is fairly inexpensive and the portions are, shall we say gigantic! We've been taking leftovers home for the past 5 days. A few rolls of bread and our dinner is set. We have yet to go out to a late dinner which begins at 8pm - too old ... read more

(Actually posted on Feb 7th) Well today is Feb 5th, Friday and we've been kinda holding ground as the weather has been pretty bad what with the wind and the rain. Our first Hosteria (B&B) here was 2.5km (1.5mi) outside of town so we have been using the local bus. You wait and flag down the bus but if it is full they just pass you by. I've on the internet looking for a long-term apartment rental but it has been difficult. We were ready to move into a small motel like apartment that would have sucked, but then we received an email from an absentee owner in Florida offering us his apartment for three weeks as his other client had an emergency and had to cancel. So not only did we get an apartment for ... read more

Michiko and I start our journey on Thursday, Jan 28th, traveling from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, Lima (Peru), Buenos Aires (3 days), then on to Bariloche. We'll be providing interesting insight into this amazing area of Argentina and include photos that show the fantastic scenery. Hopefully I will be able to keep the blog updated regularly. Sit back and enjoy the ride. Up at 5:00AM on Jan 28th and 22 hours later we were in Buenos Aires. Arrqnged for a taxi through Ezeiza Cab for $32US/$131AP directly to our B&B. Tesorito is only one block from the intersenction of Pueyrrondan & Santa Fe just outside of Regoleto. Subway is 3 minutes away plus many buses. The high priced restaurant (excellent food) Oviedo is just 10 minutes up Eucador Street. Rained heavily Friday night but cooled ... read more
