Just when I thought my camping days were over...... This Thanksgiving weekend Trevor and I took a drive up the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) to camp at the Big Sur national park, made famous by frequenters such as Jack Kerouac, Hunter Thompson and Henry Miller. The drive was lovely (the traffic sucked) as the highway follows the coast nearly all the way from LA to San Francisco. You can really tell the Big Sur country when you hit it. The cliffs are amazingly rugged and steep and the sea pounds the rocks. No swimming for me! We camped about 10 000 [View Full Entry]

I arrived back in Los Angeles on my birthday...so that I could arrive in time for a party. Not that I was in super mood after being pestered by Continental flight stewards on two separate legs of the journey (don't use your manners in America, it attracts unwanted attention!) and by some guy sitting next to me having a hypo-glaeciemic episode and wanting to lay on the floor in the aisle (sir! you most definitely can't do that!) Torture trip really....getting back into the states is a complete pain and it took me two hours to get through immigration and have [View Full Entry]

Colonia is the first port of call on the trip from Buenos Aires to Uruguay. Every bit of literature I have read on Colonia says it is the cutest town ever AND IT IS. It is right on the bay with cobbled leafy streets. Back in the day it was maybe a bit tougher with cannons and other paraphenalia defending the coast from the Argentines and other invaders. It is amazing how much Uruguay is like Australia. It has loads of Eucalyptus trees and is very dry...just like home. Gorgeous. Our trip to Uruguay also included a stop in the capital [View Full Entry]

Buenos Aires was so good the first time it really deserved a revisit. Had a fab time staying with Monica and Bruce again. Thank you guys so much for looking after us and letting us have the run of your beautiful home. It was Nicole and Dom's first time in BA, so we popped their BA cherry and did a lot of shopping as well, mostly of the window variety, but Nic and I did get to indulge our obsession at the UNICENTRE in San Isidro...paradise. There are markets all over South America with stunning, cheap jewellery and other bits and [View Full Entry]

wino's dream South America » Argentina » Mendoza
Caught a bus from Santiago to Mendoza, Argentina and a very scenic and winding bus trip up and over the Andes it was. Mendoza is the heart of the Argentine wine country. The mention of wine certainly sparked my interest. That interest def waned after a lengthy wine tour and five bodega (winery) stops. I am now vino expert and know the wine making process intimately. Although I did learn one very interesting fact...the sediment inside the wine casks is scraped out when it is empty and used to make Alka Seltzer...hair of the dog that bit ya?? Mendoza was awesome...so [View Full Entry]

Arica was mostly a place to stop on our way down the no-manlands that is northern Chile, and let me tell you there isn't much to choose from. Arica is a nice little town, which gets passed off as a beach resort. The trip from Copacabana was pretty uneventful except for the impromptu crossing of Lake Titicaca. We were hauled off the bus on onto a boat and our bus was placed precariously on a barge for the crossing. We were a little concerned...see the picture! Next stop was La Serena, Chile for another pit-stop. Not much to tell really. These [View Full Entry]

To follow on from Peru. The bus to Bolivia was interesting to say the least. At the bus station it was suggested that we bring our sleeping bags on board as it could get cold on route (ticket vendor fibbed to us and said it would be heated!) I will kill her if I meet her again! Despite sub zero temps the bus trip wasn´t so bad, except for frequent impromptu stops where I was sure we were gonna be hijacked and kidnapped! Well probably not, but they do take a video of all the passengers before the trip so that [View Full Entry]

Up the Old Peak South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu really should be included in the seven wonders of the world. What started out to be a bit of an expensive South American side trip makes it to all time top five accomplishments. Flew into Lima, Peru from Mexico...great as always, despite the huge hurricane last year, everything is up and running nicely on the east coast. Lima was ok...bit arsey and taxi drivers are intent on ripping you off. It was a bit of a mission to get to Machu Picchu, a 20 hour winding, high altitude bus trip from Lima to Cusco, complete with some complimentary yakking. [View Full Entry]

On the Road North America » United States
For the last two weeks I have been on one of the most epic road trips of all time. New York to Los Angeles. Covering something like 4000 miles and 13 states! What a mission, but really once in a lifetime trip. What an experience and i enjoyed mostly every minute! Apart from the kicks, the main purpose of the trip was to move Trevor to Los Angeles, (where I am hoping that he will score a part on Young and the Restless of some other cheesy daytime soap and be a raving success), so we left New York with a [View Full Entry]
