Last year I decided to quit my perfectly lovely job and run away to Africa. Safe to say, I don't think life is ever going to be the same :)

We started the day early heading up to the Bronx to see the zoo - as a results we managed to avoid all the crowds and see most everything before children and parents and bizarrely (or not) a lot of Orthodox Jewish families crowded in for the day. The Bronx zoo for the record is free Wednesdays hence why parents and scores of children were EVERYWHERE. Having spent most the morning watching bears play, Jessica nad I grabbed a quick lunch (i.e. STREET MEAT - yum and gross all at the same time) and then went to do what will possibly be one of the most amazing and committed and stressing and physically exhausting things ever. We stood in line for rush tickets to Broadway. It was a cold day, we had walked all morning and ... read more

I randomly thought of New York today so belatedly I am blogging about it. FIrst off, this was a copletely unplanned trip that sort of just came to happen because I was a) still unemployed b) bored and frustrated by unemployment c) Jesus spoke to me (no. not really. I'm not religious.) So off I went a wandering to the city of dreams: NEW YORK CITY. Now when I say I'm a city girl, I mean I am a city girl. Life is supposed to move fast and people talk fast, walk fast, and we deal fast. Everything is meant to big and loud and crowded and hustling and bustling and moving. 24/7. If I could live in Manhatten (SOHO for life!) it would be so amazing. Anyway, the night/day started out with the most empty ... read more

So... Surprise! I've been home about a week and back in Canada for about 2 weeks. Why is it so cold here!? The last 6 months almost seem unreal as I get back into the swing of things (i.e. job hunting like a crazy person, raiding the kitchen at every available opportunity, unpacking, repacking, unpacking, laundry, cleaning, lazing about, eating, dance parties, jet lag, paperwork). So what to say? The past 3 months were not easy, but they were amazing. I have stories about apples, goats, zims, rainstorms, soccer, food, bikes, revenants... The complete and utter disconnection from the familiar only to have the opportunity to completely and utterly lose yourself in new experiences... I think to pound home the lesson (or whatever it is) was going on a tangent about getting water from a well ... read more

alive and well in cotonou! a whole hell of a lot has gone on since moving into kpovie. firstly, this is a french keyboard so expect many spelling errors. secondly, there is no electricity or running water in kpovie which means i quite awesomely go get water from a well and carry it back to my house on my head. not going to lie, it took me a good 2 weeks to actually be successful and not spill water everywhere. the first few weeks were pretty difficult especially being completely cut off from everyone back home. my homologue and i are both citygirls so village life and all the rules set in place by SYTO benin were a lot to deal with. there was a lot of not adapting, some yelling, a minor mental breakdown, and ... read more

HI ALL I'm in AFRICA. It's 28 degrees celsuis and the SUN is beautiful (ok it's night right now, but ... yknow... it's winter where y'all are right now. Sucks to be you?) Arrived in Cotonou 3 a.m Saturay morning convinced it was Sunday morning. The plane got delayed and detoured to Marseille France making an already super long journey 6 hours longer. But, the all in all went pretty well considering. So Cotonou. Firstly, I am very much loving the city. It's nice to see people out and hear cars go by and just listen to the hum of citylife. We're staying at Cotdiam which is a... religious... housing.... unit? of some sort. They host a lot of weddings and SYTO doesn't feed us very well. :( The food here so far has hardly been ... read more

Seigneur Jesu - to paraphrase my homologue. It is ridiculously early on the one last day that I actually get to sleep in. But the 2 dogs are up running around and my phone rang so it's not like I'm getting back to sleep. One sleep. This time next week I will be in Africa. I'll be living in a small village that I can't find on google maps but have been told is close to Pahou. There will be one house with electricity and no running water. Culturally, women are treated as second class citizens. I will have no cell phone, no internet. The primary languages spoken are French and Fon. The state religion is vodun. Host family? No details. Work projects? only 2 - here's a direct translation of the info that was given: ... read more

The last few days have been pretty crazy so I apologize for my half-@$$ed update before. I officially started my malaria meds last night. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I didn't have any hallucinations (which is one of the side effects). No nausea, headaches, night terrors... actually I slept really well last night. So there's the review on Mefloquine malaria meds. Projets de travail are all done (which likely really contributes to my sleeping better). The last 2 days of "work" started with a whole day dedicated to cooking/baking/eating a really darn good brunch. Then Mich treated our group to a day out in Montreal to see the Biodome, Insectarium, and Jardins Botanique. Definitely a great last day out with our work team! And huge thank you to Mich who spoiled us rotten. There was also a forum ... read more

Je sais, il y a presque une mois que j'ai ecrit un blog. Desole. Donc, ce qui se passe en bref et inverser: - 3-0 win full contact hockey + PA checked someone so hard they had to stop the game to fix the board, assisted on goal #2, 3rd goal was a freebie straight into an empty next, refs broke up more fights than I can remember - ma famille d'accueil a adopte un nouveau chiot! So what have I been up to exactly? Thanksgiving/Action de Grace Weekend was great, no turkey but my host family treated us (me mostly haha) to sushi. (I made stuffed sole to go with it - no never made it before, yes it worked out). We also went to an amazing brunch with my host dad's family. They had a giant St Bernard which promptly tried to jump/sit on me. Nadiath decided I'd make a great shield for a 200lb dog. Our host mom also took us and the girls out shopping at Pointe Claire where I promptly asked a clerk if he spoke English and when he said yes, continued to speak in French. Hey, at least I didn't start speaking Mandarin. Haley & I also took a presque parfait jour out to the beach ... read more

So today Chez Mich, they killed 2 chickens. Given the nature of this work, I declined to join in on this one but Haley filled me in afterwards. One chicken they killed "canadian style" with some crazy bucket contraption that looked ominous at best. I'm not going to bother to talk about it because the blood stained plastic bins were frankly, pretty damn gross. The other they killed Beninese style and this is where it gets cool: Disclaimer: Don't blame me if you don't like what you read. Firstly, the chicken was given one last drink of water. Then, a little hole was dug in the ground in front of it and it's throat was gently slit so that the blood would drain out back into the earth. After the blood had drained (the chicken still ... read more
