Now that my good friend Scott has moved out to Dubai, we wanted to take advantage of our location and get exploring some of the countries in the Middle East and it was also a good excuse to get some geocaching done. First on this list was Kuwait and it would be a very quick visit as I only had the weekend to fit it in. So as with any trip it started with a plane, and this particular plane for some unknown reason even to Jesus himself didn’t have the ability of air conditioning until take off. So for a good 40 minutes I was sitting there sweating my ass off to the amusement of Scott. Anyway a minor speed bump and we were on our way to our destination. After some confusion at the ... read more

So after a flying visit to LA and boarding the world’s smallest plane, we landed in San Diego at around 9pm. It was surprisingly quiet, even more so when considering where we had just come from. After checking in to the hotel we were equally impressed with the place even if it was on a smaller scale. The next day began with breakfast at the hotel which was very posh. It was then into our pre planned visit to SeaWorld. As you expect you are treated to lots of sea life and shows from the killer whales, dolphins and sea lions. The shows are definitely the highlight of the park and each one is very different. If you like getting wet there are also designated ‘soak zones’ at each show and you don’t just get a ... read more

After literally putting my feet on the ground back in Manchester, I was already thinking about the 13 hours of flying I would have to do the next day to reach the city that never sleeps, Las Vegas. There was no question where we were when we walked off the plane to be met by the sounds and flashing lights of slot machines. After waiting for a lifetime for our bags we met our limo driver and got chatting about how Wanderlei Silva has an account and how he gets beasted at Silva’s gym on a regular basis. Cue the champagne drinking and sightseeing and I was amazed at how close the mountains were that pretty much surrounded the neon lights that are the strip. The hotel Casinos are amazingly big and our hotel the Venetian ... read more

Another weekend in the UAE, and what was in store? A trip up to Diba in Fujairah, to do some scuba diving and geocaching. It all began with a long drive after I finished work, passing through Sharjah and standstill traffic. Once I got through this I was off, foot down on the open roads, passing through the desert. As usual, sign posts slowly faded away and I was constantly questioning myself if I was going the right way. Fortunately I was, and I didn’t end up geographically unaware or even worst, lodging with a goat for the night. As with driving to Hatta, the landscape changes quickly, and the mountains spring out of the ground engulfing small villages and farms. I had to pull over at one point and take a couple of pictures, but ... read more

Well I’m sure many of you have been hearing a lot about geocaching from me and my good friend Scott. It all started when I came across an article on the web about 5 places to almost die before you die (awesome I know). One of the 5 was talking about a geocache in Sweden that is supposed to be death defying getting to. So I started to wonder what is this geocaching? Well after a quick look on their website, I soon discovered it was, to quote a friend, “A big game of hide and seek for adults.” People hide caches all over the world and give GPS coordinates as to their locations. Some add clues and descriptions, and the odd one has a picture clue. So I thought this sounds pretty interesting and as ... read more

So Garry had left and 3 of us remained. After a good night’s sleep we decided to..... Relax at the beach. Again we went to Jumeirah Beach Park and played our usual game of treading water whilst trying to catch/throw a football/tennis ball. This usually resulted in the mass consumption of sea water and a feeling of swimming many lengths. After showing off my amazing football skills we decided to have a walk around the Dubai mall. Whilst there, we ate some food at one of the restaurants and decided it would be a good idea to eat outside. We were wrong. Although we had some good views of the fountains and the Burj Khalifa, it was soooo hot! I immediately regretted it and spent our time there sweating a lot. I then treated myself to ... read more

Previously on the Hayden-Bradbury visit..... The culprit of that almighty smell was in fact Scott! We pick up from the end of the last post, en route to the Mall of the Emirates for some juicy steaks. We reminisce about our time in Newquay and will it that we would see a cow on a bridge. I park up and as we climb out I can see the heat is getting to them, especially Dave whose shorts are quite damp around the but-tocks area, welcome to Dubai Dave. After laughing at him for a couple of minutes we retreat inside form some air-con relief and quickly make our way to the steak house. All that needs to be said here is that we all cooked our won steaks, produced a lot of sweat and filmed the ... read more

I’m sure those of you who are my friends on Facebook are already aware that I’ve had some visitors the past few weeks. The constant status updates and the barrage of photo uploads to your news feeds almost deterred me from writing about said events. Almost. To start with the 1st member of the party arrived in the form of Scott Hayden, fresh from his recent deployment and miles ahead of me in the tanning game. Seriously ahead. So I greeted him at his parents’ house, shared a manly embrace and quickly ushered him outside to show him the Stang.... Then I gave him a ride in the stang whilst we talked about.... you’ve guessed it, the weather! We then visited times of old and got a Subway to go, and I showed him my residence. ... read more

As I mentioned earlier me and my students were at a drill competition last week. I had a select team from grades 10, 11 and 12 and they were representing all the schools in Abu Dhabi. There were a few high profile people in attendance and the whole thing was being filmed, no pressure. We had been training them hard for about a week, just to carry out about 8 minutes worth of foot drill, but the training went really well. After issuing them all with new uniforms and some last minute practice, we jumped onto the two mini buses one of which I was driving....Bearing in mind it was a manual and I was already used to just putting my foot down without worrying about that crazy thing called gears. Saying that, the journey went ... read more
