After being in Chiang Mai for so long I decided that I needed to get away for a long weekend. There aren't so many national holidays in Thailand but on the friday it was the Kings birthday so almost everyone had the day off... this was essential as I was traveling to Chiang Dao with a Thai person. So as I was with a Thai person we took the local bus up there (I wouldn't have done by myself, I didn't even know where to get off and ould have ended up by the Burmese border) which is only about 1.5 hours and in a straight line near enough, and it turned out I was the only farang (foreigner) on the overcrowded bus... so overcrowded in fact that the walkway was full of people, two person ... read more
The journey from Siem Reap was well... long. Plus the roads in Cambodia weren't of the highest quality which made the trip interesting and a little longer. When we finally made it to the border on the edge of Thailand we were confronted not by fighting Thai and Cambodian soldiers disputing border land which had been in the news but by a mid section of casinos between the two border lines... so this is where everyone comes to gamble, I was always wondering. Finally after crossing the border and exchanging the full small bus with a half full big coach on the Thai side we were off and eventually came into the city of Bangkok during the nights darkness I was confronted by the impressive skyline spanning what like seemed forever as we circled it. After witnessing the modern city of Phnom Penh I had envisioned Siem Reap to be very similar but on a smaller scale... I was quite wrong. What lead me to believe this was that this small city is the base to visit all the temples... like Angkor Wat etc... in the area, so a big spot for tourists and backpackers alike. I first found out that Siem Reap was a little under developed when we got off the bus at the bus station and got in a tuk tuk to take us down the road to a hotel in the city.
