First Trip over the border North from Thailand, quite town with casual atmosphere. Nightlife fairly laidback unless you find the disco at the hotel. Getting around was easy and locals freindly. They drive on the opposite side of the road from Thailand so if coming from there, beware when taking your first few corners... Rained the entire time as there was a monsoon off Vietnam. Stayed in a 3 star hotel for one night and decided to pay the extra $10 pn to get the extra star. Well worth the money as increased the comfort factor 5 fold. Found some nice eateries on the Mekong river.. Where the bitumen turns to dirt road continue on the dirt for the best bars and restuarants I found.. Looks as though they are doing up the waterfront and imagine ... read more

Flight to Beijing and check into a fine Hotel for the cost of $30AUS per night. First thing we notice about Beijing is its flat, not just flat but billiard table flat. The city is divided into blocks, these are not just regular blocks but some go for a kilometer. To look on a map, what may seem a short distance to walk, being a few blocks can turn into a proper day outing with plenty of walking. The pushbike appears to be a prefered mode of transport as I have already mentioned, Beijing is flat! We went to the compulsory Forbidden City, Great wall, Summer Palace, Olympic Site, Markets, parks and numerous Temples. The girls also went to the Tianamen Square Flag raising (at 4am), the zoo, and the Temple of Heaven. I spent this ... read more
We were picked up from the border of HK / China by friends and travelled to the industrial area of Guangzhou were we where to spend a few days at a zipper factory belonging to friends from Australia. As is customary apparently in the region we were taken out to eat late at night. The restuarants here can cater for over 1000 people and the foyers look more like exotic pet shops than an eatery. The Cantonese have a way to make everything edible and delicious. They could even make lawn clippings taste like heaven and probably do. The factory we stayed at as previously mentioned made zippers. Not just assembled zippers but did everything from weave the cloth to smelt and cast the fittings. It employed about 150 people and churned out tens of thousands ... read more

Nobody, and I mean nobody speaks a word of english so I had to polish up on the vietnamese quickly.
