Wow, how time flies, and it has been a while since we have blogged! After returning from Pie de la Cuesta, we spent a quiet couple of weeks here in DF, catching up with school, Linda is busy doing her International Bauclareate accreditation as well as some tutoring. There is such a demand that even I have attended a few tutoring classes with other teachers, and after Easter may take on some tutoring myself. However, I seem to have no trouble keeping busy looking after everything else that needs doing. Then, Friday, Febuary 25th, off we went to San Miguel de Allende, about 4 hours Northwest of here. Stephanie, a young teacher at ASF, and her husband Alex, a webpage designer, joined us for our excursion. We left right from school, meet up at the metro ... read more

After being in Saskatoon for Christmas, we enjoyed just being home here in DF in January. But now, time to go again!Fran and Jo Anne, teacher buddies, had never been to Morelia and we finally found a place they have not visited yet. So off we went, leaving from the bus depot at Observatorio, which is close to the school. We thought the buses we have been riding were comfortable, but for only 50 pesos more, we chose to ride with ETN, the luxury line that charges a bit more and gives way more. Wow, seats were so big that they were only 3 across and the bus can only carry 26 passengers so we had an extra foot of space between rows. Wi-Fi, TV, and games were on a remotely controlled screen on the back ... read more

December 18th, and we are off for home, Canada! We enjoyed a leisurely morning and headed to the airport around noon. We arrived in Saskatoon at 12:30 A.M. and were greeted by..........3out 4 grandchildren, of course. What a welcome! A banner and smiles all around! Leslie and her 3 children were waiting for us as was Aaron, who gave us a ride home. There Linda and I were at 2 in the morning, looking out the picture window at the beautiful winter scene displayed outside while standing in our warm and toasty home. We had never appreciated central heating that much before. Marty, who lives downstairs, has the thermostat set at 75, it is cooler down there than it is upstairs and we mellowed in the heat. Sunday, up and at it. You guessed it, couldn't ... read more

As you can see by the title, we have had a busy 3 weeks. Luc and Colette brought with them a long awaited taste of home, with both arriving Saturday night, Luc from Dubai, and Colette later on from Saskatoon. However, the three of us failed to realize that she was arriving at terminal 2 instead of terminal 1, so unfortunately, we were not there to greet her at the gate. Again, we apologize! Sunday, we proudly showed them our neighbourhood riding the ecobics. Sunday evening, we headed to the Zocalo to watch the celebration "Viva Mexico" along with thousands of others. This spectacle ran from Nov 11 to Nov 23rd, and featured music, singing and dancing while a spectacular light show transformed the buildings surrounding the Zocalo. Smoke, lights, mists, music all combine to thrill ... read more

We have been quieter since our escapades during the Day of the Dead festivities. Linda very much enjoyed a street salad in Mixquic, however, it took a few days for her to return to normal enjoyment of food. She somehow managed to work through her school days, and rest afterward. On Saturday, we went to view the annual art fair held at the school. Local and international artists paid for booths to display their wares and there were art displays by the students as well. Children activities, food booth and tables covered most of campus. Sunday saw us off to Balderas Market located just 5 metro stops away. This is a huge permanent market that functions daily, marketing traditional Mexican crafts, clothes, pottery, art, ceramics, masks, lights, glass, wooden artifacts etc from all over Mexico. We ... read more

Late October and we are nicely into BBQ season, the weather is ideal, 22-24 during the day, 12-14 at night. Linda says when she arrives at school at 6:45 am it is 60 F according to the thermometer. We had 6 for supper Friday night, Megan says she has been in Mexico over 4 years and that this was her first home style BBQ. We did pork chops and pork loin, I am getting used to the charcoal thing and the supper was delicious. Then we were off at 8PM for the Aleks Synstek concert. He is a huge recording star here in Mexico and kind of reminded us of Elton John in style and talent. The concert was held in an auditorium similar to but double the size of the Centennial Auditorium in Saskatoon, lending ... read more

First of all, I must apologize, today, October 19th, I log onto the blog site and to my amazement, realize that the last blog was not sent on October 13th like I thought it was. My mistake, so hopefully I will get this one out a little more diligently. Linda is off to school as usual, and is very busy testing and preparing report cards. I seem to be able to find things that need doing to keep busy. Of course, I walk and ride bike quite a bit, for example, a trip to Costco requires 35 minutes, most of it brisk walking, and maybe 10 minutes of subway riding time. Costco remains our favorite store to access meats, we do draw the line and avoid the meats, chicken and fish that are offered in the ... read more

Another week of school has come and gone, we are in a routine now, and of course keeping busy. Incredible amounts of work need to be covered in school before testing starts the 5th of October. Math is taought at least an hour and a half a day. We do take snack and a bathroom break because Linda just can't make that whole time on task. Testing, testing testing and more testing. They do something here called NWEA testing. This/that takes place the week before the end of grading period 1. Two weeks in a row of testing has wiped Linda out...and the marking is making her CRAZY! Yes, please keep in mind that there are still at least 3 manditory meetings a week during the testing time. Linda has Spanish classes with a tutor after ... read more

On Sept 15th, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bells sounding the cry for Independence Mexico celebrates 200 years. Government employees and most schools were closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, so a very long week-end for all. Decorations everywhere, music, live bands, and people, people, people. Linda's school, being an American school, had classes Wednesday until 12 p.m. Afterwards, six of us met and strolled down Paseo de la Reforma, the city's main central street which was closed off to all traffic. Reforma has traffic circles with huge intricate monuments at major intersections every 5-6 blocks. There are 5 lanes going each way with a central stroll area that is very wide, maybe 15 yards. Then, there are 2 more lanes on the outside with a dedicated bycicle lane and all of this was closed to ... read more

Xochimilco, now a suburb of Mexico City, is located some 27 miles south of Mexico City center. THE PLAN: meet at ASF school at 9 a.m., bus to Xochimilco, visit and buy plants, then a canal ride, and then back to ASF school by 2:30. Tracy, whom Linda gets a ride to school with every morning, offers to pick us up and take us to the school Saturday morning. Great, beats taxis or the Metro. So I offer to cook breakfast and Tracy joins us at 7:45 for eggs, sausage, toast fruit and jams. 7:45 breakfast meant that we were able to have a big sleep in until like 7 am, remember, we are used to 5:45 am. We arrive at school a little before 9, and being polite, we wait until 9:30 to leave ... read more
