Stuck in Wadi Rum - From: Dahab to Aquaba
Yes, Jez was our driver--see "we broke our driver" after Greg broke his feet. I'm sure Jez went to basically the same place for camping.

O.K. Bill - I'm glad I'm not Joan! You've got waay too many cute young college age gals w/sorry - but older gentlemen! Now I know how you're surviving happily this heat! Got to give you grief! Sorry the plans have been going bust recently. It sounds like y'all are through w/the touring part and just ready to kick back at this point. Not that I'd blame you! :) Love, Beth

How the heck did you get down the tunnel?! - From: Long drive to Capadocia
Hi Bill! How on earth did you get down that narrow, long tunnel?!! The formations look neat. I sure am enjoying your trip b/c there are definitely parts of this world that I'm relying upon seeing via you, b/c I'll never go some of the places you've been, nor travel quite in the same fashion! You're definitely lower maintenance than me! :) Love, Beth

I'm now adding extra prayers for safety!!! - From: Rousted by the Syrian Army
Dear Bill, O.K. this is now beyond adventuresome and reached the level of "are you nuts?!!" Seriously, I'm grateful that y'all had the good sense NOT, nor NEVER to hand over your passports. Smart move. Hope things get calmer and more luxurious. You deserve a break! Love, Beth

reinforcing bars in concrete - From: LOST BLOG ENTRY
We heard the same thing about houses being unfinished by leaving the rebar hanging out. It does seem, however, that many of the buildings are finished and still have the rebar hanging out. Egypt and Syria, the poorest countries, seem to have more of this.' Bill

:) - From: Rousted by the Syrian Army
Now this blog entry made me chuckle a bit... remember the mineret?? Hmm.. camping on the sidewalk reminds me of camping when I was younger-just kidding. That must have been a bit scary when you saw the Syrian guards. Each time I read an entry I am even more impressed ( and a little envious!) with your trip. Stay Safe and I love you! Jennifer

Reinforcing Steel in Syria - From: LOST BLOG ENTRY
Bill, When Anna & I were in Syria the story we got about reinforcing steel is that when it is showing on a building it is considered unfinished and thus no taxes have to be paid. Thus, it is left showing all the time!

Petra's my fav so far! - From: A day in Petra
Dear Bill, Oh- Petra is definitely my fav so far! I admit I loved the pyramids, the Nile sail, the pretty Blue Hole but this simply doesn't look as hot and exhausting and soley concrete edifices as I saw in Cairo! Ilove the architecture, the natural beauty and the allure and mystery of it all, (and there appears to have been some shade vs those pyramids that just sit in the sandy dust in the sun!) By the time you get this, you will have visited the Dead Sea I bet, but I liked it. Floating was fun and the Ahava Foot cream is the BEST! Hope you go to Masada near the Dead Sea which is terribly fascinating and educational. God Bless! Love, Beth

O.K. was Lawrence of Arabia a real person?!! - From: Dahab to Aquaba
Dear Bill, I confess my woeful ignorance but I thought Lawrence of Arabia was just an old movie classic which I saw for the 1st time last yr. Was he for real?!! If so, you'll have to tell me more about him when you return Stateside! The fancy lunch looked good. Got to keep some lbs. on you! :) Are you saying that this obsure area should remain obscure to the tourist map or did you feel this portion of the trip was worthwhile?!! I'm dubbing you the Clayton Explorer! Love, Beth

Dahub is more my speed! - From: Sunday in Dahab
Hi Bill, Dahub is really pretty! The trash reminds me of the Palenstians trashing their territory in Israel - supposedly b/c they're only "rentors" not "owners." Oh well. The blue hole is gorgeous and the cuisine sounds infinitely better than anything you've had to date. Yes - I like the price but even the cheap prices on the previous cuisine would have left me wanting given the local cuisine of tomato sauce over mystery meat, etc., (except for McD's which I bet was a welcome relief after the more local fare!). Salt water trickle showers, sound like a hoot, but at least the lobby looks charming! I'm really enjoying your writings and love the accompanying pics!!!! God speed! Love, Beth

Atop Mt. Sinai is cool! (you wish - ha!) - From: Mt Sinai and on to Dahab
Dear Bill, Sorry I was sick w/a very bad sinus infection for a week and have still had to deal w/other professionals fixing the BAD contractor for the kitchen remodeling at my condo I've been dealing w/now since 2/07! Anyway, finally read/saw many of your blogs today. Sorry about your driver but glad you got a new one in time to take care of y'all! I'm soo proud of you for tackling Mt. Sinai. Holly, my parents and I were talking yesterday when together, that we're all most impressed by you, your courage, fortitude, tolerance for so many conditions that we would prefer to avoid! I've always wanted to make the trip you're making, but alas, I'm afraid I would be acused and correctly so, of being somewhat higer maintenance and I'm really not a high maintenance chick! ha! Take care and God's blessings of continued good health and definitely safe journeys, (what measures!). Love, Beth

Convoys in Syria - From: Mt Sinai and on to Dahab
Bill, Our trip had no police or quards. We did have to have a state sanctioned guide though. Other that that we just traveled around in our bus and didn't see any of the bases that we passed. It sounds like you are having a totally different experience. Inshallah Robert

It makes me want to go! - From: 3 days on a Felucca on the Nile
Bill, Having just been in Syria for two weeks in March the buildings and look all to familiar. The trip on the Nile sounds particularly great! Seeing things, like the Pyramids, that we've heard about for years is so different and makes it all real. Have a great rest of the trip. Inshallah Robert
