- From: Refugios and Hiking Around El Bolson
You can camp with a tent next to the refugios I visited. It costs but not much... 3 or 4 dollars US maybe. Food you can buy but what is available varies from refugio to refugio. Better to bring some of your own. Go! Take a week, or more!

hiking - From: Refugios and Hiking Around El Bolson
hello, thanks for the info. i am wondering, how long, and how cheaply, is it possible to hike around the areas with refugios? For instance, if i brought a tent, could i set up nearby and just buy some food? And, are you able to buy supplies at the refugios, or just meals? Thanks, Eli

Great account of a rare event - From: Lituya Bay Outburst Flood - 2009
Great photo documentation and writing! It's hard to grasp the scale of the landscape in the aerial photos, even having been there. The faint white streamers in the water represent so much ice we could not push through it in our pack rafts! It's probably worth mentioning the rarity of this event. While the flow from Desolation Lake must vary considerably I have never heard of an outburst event of this scale in Lituya Bay. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened, of course; there are times when no one is there.

any upcoming travel plans? - From: Ski to the Sea
Hey Bill- Long time, eh? Just checking in, seeing if you're planning to head down south again this winter? I've got the travel bug again and have to live vicariously through others (our blog has been in hibernate). I'm thinking about how to get back to Argentina for some sun (I know, a bit early to be talking about sun. Can't help it. I got so much last winter, I'm in withdrawal). Although I would gladly settle for Mexico or Hawaii this year. Looking forward to more blog updates of your travels and hope all is well in SE!

Alaska - From: Gustavus in Winter
Hi Beinak, I’m writing from Bath, England where normally we see only rain. It was quite a great exception last week when 3 inches of snow fell. The public transport didn’t operate for a few days and lectures were cancelled as well. It might be quite funny for people living in Alaska but we suffered a ‘severe weather conditions’. I come from Bulgaria where there is bit more snow than England but far away less than in Alaska. Anyway… it looks so beautiful on the pictures. They really made me want to go there some day. It sounds a great experience and the perfect winter holiday. Martina

rain gear and fleece - From: El Chalten - the Land of Mountains and Backpackers
I would have a good, light weight rain coat and pants. Plus some fleece. Hat and light gloves. A 4 wheel drive... at El Chalten.... well, it is a park and everyone is hiking. There are some dirt roads in or next to the park but not that many. A 4 wheel is not necessary to get to El Chalten, the road in is paved. But there are many mile of unpaved roads in Patagonia where 4 wheel drive would be good.

You wrote a very nice article, as I am planning on a visit in September. Please what kind of gear you brought for cold and warm weather. Would a four wheel drive vehicle help at all? Thanks. Gerry

Hi Bill! We just got done with the Circuit in Torres del Paine, and looks like we had similar experiences to yours in El Chalten. Have you been to Natales yet? Similar town, set up for hikers. Had amazing weather, and terrible weather...all in all, a good trip. WeŽll post something soon. After reading your blog, weŽre now thinking of heading up that way again...hope all is well!

Punta Tombo - From: Penguins in the Wind
Hi Qian, Punta Tombo is a Provencial Reserve, with park rangers who are stationed along the path and at the parking area. It is very well organized and needs to be - it would only take a single person walking on the beach to panic a lot of very happy penguins. Or someone with a dog... There is a park entrance fee, I think it was 30 or 40 pecos.

Si, es verdad... - From: Buenos Aires or Buenos Robbery???
Hi Bill! Nice to see you on here too...perhaps meeting up down the road wonŽt be so much by-chance now that we can check in every so often. But I wanted to comment about your post. We agree! On Friday, we went down to Retiro and were warned in advance not to leave our bikes alone, even if securely locked up. So Mark locked them to a tree and sat by them while I went inside. Within fifteen minutes, four teenage boys were trying to take his stuff...one trying to rip his clothes, another grabbing at his day pack, another physically getting in his face, etc. So he just screamed like crazy and held onto his bag. A few people tried to help, but they came back. The second time they came back, Mark grabbed the bag and just got in the biggest ones face and kept screaming at him...trying to scare them I guess you could say. This sort of worked, the biggest kid took off. And then the cops came and really smacked them around. I guess this is common, to use distractions like this to pickpocket and steal. Whew...good luck out there. Nothing stolen here. We were sad we couldnŽt thank the cops more though, with our baby baby spanish.

Doh! - From: Buenos Aires or Buenos Robbery???
Bill, Greetings from Alaska! Thanks for posting your adventures; we are following along with great interest. I'm sorry to hear your laptop was stolen; I hope that doesn't hamper the blogging you were going to do. Nothing very exciting to report on the home front. The big winter storm we're in the middle of turned out to be just rain (so far) in Gustavus. Cheers, Nate and Chip
