Europe » Albania » West » DurrĂ«s June 3rd 2011

Today we were up at 6:30 am to leave for Albania! The coach left at 8 am. It was going to be a big travelling day today. Although the distance wasn't that far, the road we were going to be travelling on were very bad (windy, bumpy, and unpaved) in this part of Europe, so it would take double the time it would usually take to cover the same distance. I was looking forward to seeing Albania since it is not somewhere that a lot of people can say that they've been to. I thought it would be very interesting. We stopped for our first services at 9:30 am, which was just a tiny little gas station in the middle of nowhere. We had to line up to buy food and use the toilet. We should ... read more

Europe » Greece » Ionian Islands » Preveza June 2nd 2011

We were up at 9 am today to get ready to leave Mykonos. I think we were all pretty sad to be leaving this island paradise. Breakfast was at 10 am, then we had some time to relax before the shuttle was due to pick us up at 11 am. We drove back to the ferry terminal in Mykonos town, and got ready for the two hour journey to mainland Greece. On the ferry most of us napped and relaxed; it had been a hectic three days in Mykonos and we needed some down time to recover. We arrived at 1:30 pm, where we met back up with our coach and settled in for the drive to Preveza. We stopped for services at 4 pm, and ate at Maccas (how the Aussie's say McDonald's). Usually I'm ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Mykonos June 1st 2011

This morning I didn't wake up until 10:30 am. I went for another great breakfast, then walked over to the hotel's gym for my massage. It was a maze and I had a hard time finding it, but eventually got there. The massage was meant to be kind of like a sports massage, and it was extremely painful. Good, but painful. Afterwards I felt so much better, more rejuvenated, and ready for the remaining three weeks of our tour. Traveling is a lot of fun, but it can get exhausting after a while. I'd been doing so much walking around and sightseeing my muscles were killing me! Try to splurge on something like this for yourself at least once if you can - you will feel great afterwards! Afterwards I went back to my room to ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Mykonos May 31st 2011

Today we all got to sleep in for the first time since we had left London. I slept until 10 am, then went to breakfast with Karly and Sharna. The breakfasts here were amazing - there was so much food and it all tasted great. For the next few hours I got ready, booked a massage for the next day, mailed some postcards, and used the computers in the hotel lobby. It was quite nice to not have anything to do, and to just catch up on de-stressing and some chores. At 1:30 pm, I met Karly, Sharna, and Debs to catch the bus into Mykonos town. Once there we split up - Karly and I went shopping one way, and Sharna and Debs went the other. Mykonos town was absolutely beautiful. I just found everything ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Mykonos May 30th 2011

Today was a very early start. We were up at 4:30 am, and breakfast was at 5:15 am. Our coach was meant to leave the hotel at 6 am, but Seb slept in so we were 15 minutes late haha. It was only a 30 minute drive to the port at Piraeus, where we boarded our ferry for the island of Mykonos! This was the place that the majority of people on the tour said they were most looking forward to, and I think it was one of the highlights of most people's trips (it certainly was for me). At the port we had to take all of our suitcases off the coach and walk on the ferry. The coach wouldn't come with us to Mykonos- it would stay in Athens for the next three days. ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens May 29th 2011

The seats on the ferry got very uncomfortable after a while, and it was really hard sleeping upright. Eventually Megan took the floor and I layed down between our two seats. At 5:30 am an announcement came on saying that we were approaching our destination. Everyone jumped up and started freaking out because we were about six hours early and none of us were packed or ready. Turned out - we were just at the first stop that the ferry goes to, Corfu. We still had quite a while to go, so everyone went back to sleep. I woke up at 9:30 am and decided to skip breakfast for today. After getting ready I went for a walk around the outside deck with Debs. Our whole group spent the morning relaxing and watching a movie (Derailed ... read more

Europe » Italy » Apulia » Bari May 28th 2011

We were up quite early this morning to leave for Athens. The coach left at 7 am, and we ate breakfast while on the bus. It was an hour and a half drive to our first service stop, which was one of the busiest service stops I've ever been too. The lineup for the washroom was about a mile long, and everyone was pushing and shoving and it really was not a pleasant experience haha. We were back on the coach a little after 9 am and on our way to Pompeii, a Roman town partially buried from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. This was somewhere I'd always wanted to see, so I had signed up for the optional tour that Contiki offers. Guided tour of Ancient Pompeii (18-19 euro): Turn back the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome May 27th 2011

We had breakfast at 8 am today before starting out to begin our full day in Rome! We took public transport to the city (train / metro) and got off near the Spanish Steps. We got an included walking tour from Seb that covered the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Piazza Venezia, and the Colosseum. We made several stops along the way, including to get some espresso and gelato. I had to stop at a pharmacy and get some probiotics and sunscreen. I had definitely underestimated the heat that we were experiencing in southern Europe. And this was only May! Anyone travelling to Europe in July/August, be prepared for extreme heat. I had to be really careful not to get dehydrated or sunburnt (with my pasty skin). As soon as we got to Rome I knew I ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome May 26th 2011

I woke up this morning not hungover at all...it was great! Luckily I was able to sleep in until about 8:30 am. Today our drive to Rome would be quite short. During the first part of the drive Seb handed out our tour T-shirts. One of the girls on tour, Ann (from California) is an amazing artist, and she designed the graphic for the t-shirts. It looked really great. I got a grey hoodie, but there are lots of different styles and colours to choose from. On most tours your group will be given the chance to create the design near the beginning of the tour, such as we did on this one. On my last tour (12 days), there really wasn't enough time for us to create our own, so our tour manager designed it ... read more
