| 8th June 2006 Melissa | hello from the hammer - From: Life in the Present Tense hey beck! i'm so happy that you're having this awsome experience, i loved reading your journals. It's so unfortunate that the situations you're witnessing still exist in this 21st 'post-modern' century, and for those of us who have never seen any of this poverty first-hand, it's even harder to imagine the reality of it all. It's difficult to try and think beyond what we've been conditioned to believe is important here on this side of the world- the concept of 'me, myself and I'. Undoubtedly, this needs to change to something more like 'you, them and everyone else,' and i hope with all my heart (for the sake of human kind) that this happens very soon. take care. be safe. P.S. that cleaning everything book sounded really cool...haha |
| 1st June 2006 Erin Dude | Becky - Are you Mother Earth reborn? - From: Life in the Present Tense Hey there soulful wanderer. Your experiences sound so rich I am jealous. I just came back from a month in Mexico and was also hit with a lot of global realization; so many wonderful people don't have money, are powerless and therefore invisible and for anyone to become invisible is the worst tragedy I can think of. Our power means we have obligations to all those made equal but powerless. But I also share your hope; what the world needs is some new ideas and when that peace train leaves the station, I'll be on it with you. I'm ready to roll some heads, the name WUSC will ring throughout Hamilton and I know a whole team Mexico that will be in on it. And take care of yourself woman! Don't scare me with that Malaria shit. Love, Erin |
| 30th May 2006 jess | - From: Life in the Present Tense while you stuggle to understand the plague that is poverty whilst viewing it first hand (i would have said experiencing it, but, as you alluded to previously, your encounter with malaria treatment removes you from the experience), i stuggle to figure out why i'm writing my mcats. how is my sitting in a room that i'm willing to bet is hotter than kenya (it's 40 degrees in the shade here) going to do anything for anyone, especially since i don't know if i want to go to med school? i just got back from LA, where my year long programme was wrapped up with the theme of "living with the questions." my question? now what? we'll talk lots when you get home. lots. be safe. and have extra adventures for me. send my love to meg. in love (and peace), jess p.s. one of my very dear friends is going to be in zambia working in a congolese refugee camp next month doing women's empowerment work for the un or something along those lines. would you like me to put you guys in touch? |
| 18th May 2006 Brad | A book - From: Nairobi Hey Becky, stay alert and stay safe. I recommend 'Sweetness in the Belly' by Camilla Gibb if anyone is interested in learning a little bit about life in a 'slum' in an African city. This city happens to be Harar, Ethiopia, and it's a love story to boot. |
| 18th May 2006 Loyd | Welcome home- Karibu sana - From: Nairobi Becky, You are bringing back all the memories of Kenya to me. I can smell Kibera and I can feel the love from all the way here. I am glad I have an "acomplice" 2 if I count meg. We have a long chat awaiting you on arrival. I am in your SEED team now, or you are on my Jalia team (By the way Jalia is Swahili for Empower) Thats my small charity here in Canada working to make a difference in Kenya on HIV/AIDS More when you come back |
| 18th May 2006 Alison | You found IT!!!! - From: Nairobi Yeay Becky! I'm so glad you are having this awesome experience. It sounds so familiar. (Whitehead says the stuff about relating to other too eh?!!! - not just Albert!) I want to be the first person to sponsor a child for SEED Nairobi! Put my name down for that. I also want to thank you for the CD you made me. The songs are perfect for the solidarity of the world - it has seen me through some tough days. Those kinds of things we do for each other may hold the key to how we can bring the non-material world of RELATIONSHIPS that we discover elsewhere BACK to the west. I'm so happy for you. (Off to Sri Lanka in 2 weeks... to relocate MYself.) Tons of Love, Alison xxxx |
| 8th May 2006 Martha | - From: wander away "People don't take trips, trips take people." - John Steinbeck Keep yourself safe and keep me posted on your adventures! Most of all, be open to where your journey takes you. Inevitably you'll have an epiphany of interconnectedness when you least expect it. Best, Martha |
