I’ve been in Ponethong now for 5 weeks and have been invited to 3 weddings. At this rate I’ll have been invited to approx 60 weddings by the time I leave for home. My whole life in America and I’ve maybe gone to six. The Thai’s are pretty practical and don’t give newlyweds 3 toasters, 2 blenders, 6 photo frames, etc, etc. but do give between 200-300 baht per person. Thank goodness everyone knows I’m an “asaasamaak” and doesn’t get paid for being here. Besides, I really don’t know any of these people! The best part is the food…boy do they feed you well. This particular wedding was across the street but because the street is used as the reception area and is quite narrow, it was natural for the party to extend to my front ... read more

It's been a lazy week here in Northeastern Thailand. Summer is in full swing and the days are hot... no I don't mean just hot, I mean really hot AND humid. Try to imagine standing in a sauna with the heat set at 100 degrees for about 14hours, fully clothed. That's how I feel today...drained and wet. Now that I have everyone's sympathy I can tell you that I'm actually sitting in a nice cool ICT office my village has recently built. It's got 12 new computers ready for anxious students. It will be interesting to see who actually uses them. My Thai counterpart, Lek, is in Bangkok the next two weeks learning how to teach Information, communication, technology. I on the other hand have been pedaling around my villages conversing with the locals, attempting to ... read more

I’ve begun to equate my life with that of a gardener…sizing up the plot, testing the soil for richness, clearing the brush and rocks, beginning the weeding and tilling of the land. Finally, planting the seeds for eventual harvest. This past week I actually did plant my garden. It seemed like the right time. While I was preparing the soil, I ran into a pile of buried rocks that were very stubborn to dig out. It took me a couple of days of hard work to clear some, but not all, of them. I was beginning to think that this plot was given to me because it was not very good or productive. Then I put it all in perspective…it’s not always going to be easy to ride my bike through my 12 villages, attempting intentional ... read more

Songkran, the most popular Thai festival of the year, is held between the 13th and 15th of April. It celebrates the lunar New Year and the Buddha images are bathed or cleansed with water. The elders are sprinkled with water on their hands and necks as a show of respect. In the larger cities water battles are the order of the day with truckloads of people, mostly the young, carrying huge pots of water and bazooka water guns. The festival actually started here in Ponethong on Saturday. Five mounds of sand were dumped at the local wat and the village families somehow organized themselves into groups to work on individual mounds forming them into pyramids. They were then decorated with fresh flowers and candles. My office, the SAO or Sub-district Administrative Office, or in Thai, aw-baa-daw, ... read more

IT'S OFFICIAL; I’m a real Peace Corps Volunteer. Well OK, I haven’t done anything worthwhile yet except to stop and talk to everyone along my bike route. They’re probably laughing more then usual and if I’m the cause of that humor, so be it. I arrived in Tombon, Ponethrong, Changwat, Chaiyaphum, Thursday evening. My house was cleaned and ready for me. I feel like a princess…I not only have a queen size bed (yes a real bed with a frame) but a shower with hot water and a western toilet. Of course the toilet doesn’t flush, but it’s nice to sit on anyway. I've kind'a gotten carried away with my photos today. There's been so much going on that I can't possibly tell it all in text. Yes, sometimes a picture is worth a 1000 words ... read more

I’m almost there… I can see the flags waving me on at the finish line. The final week of training is coming to an end and I couldn’t be happier. The Competency test was taken today and the language this past Saturday. I actually passed and can now ask for directions to the bathroom! These have truly been the toughest two months I’ve experienced in years and if I had to do it over, I would think long and hard. There have been some very bright and beautiful spots on the horizon and those are what have kept me motivated. You will see them here in the faces of some of the people I’ve come to love. Jakkit and his family have so little when it comes to material wealth yet they share every meal with ... read more

Sorry about the lull with updating my blog. Two weeks ago we traveled as a group to Bangkok, stayed in a lovely hotel on the banks of the Chao Praya River (any hotel with a western toilet and shower is considered 'lovely"). Gee, how my standards have changed. We were broken into groups of 5 and dropped off at different locations throughout Bangkok and then told we were playing the "Amazing race" and had to locate the PC office on our own. It was a fun exercise being we had others to fall back on. Two days hence, we had to find our way out of Bangkok, TOTALLY ON OUR OWN!. For some reason it was not as much fun. I will be living in Chaiyaphum, another Province north east of Chaibadan. My new home for ... read more

Where has week 5 gone? This week was used for planning a presentation on our (PCT) perception of the needs and strengths of the local Moo. The Moo is like a village and the official government office is called a Tambon. We have been studying Moo 2 for the last couple of weeks, interviewing and gathering information about the occupations, local business, health and education issues. It has been interesting doing this especially with the lack of language skills. The locals are very patient with us and we all laugh a lot. The presentation, to be held in front of local officials, must be in Thai! We have until the 25th to practice. Friday we did an English camp at the larger elementary school in Chaibadaan. Think about explaining snow to kids who have never seen ... read more

Good Morning All, This week I thought I'd talk a little more about some of the foods I've been exposed to. Notice I didn't use the word "eaten". You all know me to be somewhat adventuresome but there are some limits when it comes to my palate. Oh, before I go any further, let me apologize for any typo's, misspellings, bad grammar etc. No spell or grammar checks on this blog....I should take issue with that. In Thailand a meal is not a meal unless it includes rice. That means a bowl of rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For us Westerners this is cause for concern.......constipation!!!! I know this is not the proper forum for such a topic but it is of upmost importance for those staying here any length of time. I've tried to ... read more
