Today, having finally realized that I was at the ocean, I did what I'd usually do there and got up to watch the sunrise. There was a belt of cloud on the horizon, so I did not actually get to see the sun rise out of the sea, but the cloud colors were striking and it made a good start to the day. At 9 a.m., I walked down the seaside path in the other direction, away from the historic Art Deco district. The first place I encountered was Marineland of New Zealand. I had, actually, seen and investigated Marineland a couple of days ago; it's right across the street, diagonally, from the YHA. Marineland was closed indefinitely to the public in 2008. New Zealand's Department of Conservation objected to the keeping of dolphins in captivity. ... read more

I've settled comfortably in to YHA Napier, as I did into Tailor-Made Tekapo and YHA Te Anau and the Kiwi's Nest. I still have moments of acute distress when I think ahead to Rotorua and Gisborne, but overall I'm a lot calmer. I really like this YHA; it's been quiet well before midnight, and the staff is friendly. They've also, as I found this morning, got a really great laundry room. I've said so much about laundry disasters in this blog that I think I ought to mention that YHA Napier's washers and dryers are clean, fully functional, and effective. I breezed through my wash with no trouble at all. When the laundry was finished, I went out for a walk along the path beside the beach. (Walking on the beach itself is not practical; it ... read more

Day 63: Back to the Thirties

I slept well, though with the aid of the very last of my Benadryl, and woke rather groggily at 7:30 a.m. I went out to walk by the ocean (for the YHA is across the street from the South Pacific), and when I returned I had a wonderful surprise. The lady I'd asked to pray for me had come to the YHA while I was gone, and left a package for me. It proved to contain a 2011 calendar, a keychain, and several postcards of New Zealand. There was also a friendly note, wishing me a happy stay in Napier and safe travels onward. I was delighted. Somehow it made the whole trip feel safe and happy again. I decided to go sightseeing. I had noticed a mention of Art Deco Walking Tours on my ... read more

It was exhausting but simple to drag my luggage the four or five blocks to the Criterion. My first impression was cautiously favorable. It was certainly a lovely old building, right in the Art Deco district of Napier. The lounge was decorated in that style, as were the bathrooms. And the manager was kind enough to carry my bags upstairs for me. My bed was hard, but my room was rather nice, with a washbasin and a lovely small-paned window with a pretty view of the art-deco district. It looked out over a pedestrian mall, so for once automobile traffic was not a problem. I thought, hesitantly, that I might be happy here once I had settled down a bit. I went shopping; the supermarket was closer than I'd feared, too. Things began to go downhill ... read more

Rather sadly, I said goodbye to Sue. It was time to leave; they needed the houseroom, but I was tired of travelling and homesick and I longed to go home. It had been good to be part of a family for a few days, even if it wasn't my own. There were 50-mile-an-hour winds all the way to Napier, and the bus swayed disconcertingly. It hurt my shoulder. We drove along the very edge of a steep gorge, with a lovely whitewater river in it. On the other riverbank, there were train tracks and the occasional tunnel. We stopped for lunch at a Country Cafe in Matamau, and I had an excellent lamb pie. Only two restrooms were available, and one was the restroom of a motel unit, opened up for use by the bus passengers. ... read more

I spent the next four nights with Sue's family in Palmerston North, and I had a wonderful time. They are all readers (I met Sue through a mailing list devoted to the discussion of children's literature), so all around me were bookcases full of reassuringly familiar books. After the shock in Wellington, it was just what I needed. I regrouped, rested, and read. I had the chance to read Clare Mallory's Merry trilogy and her "New House at Winwood." I also read a delightful series of picture books about a Scotch terrier, Hairy McClary from Donaldson's Dairy, which made a nice change of pace. ... read more

I checked out of YHA Wellington with a sense of profound relief. Sue had been kind enough to offer me a ride to Palmerston North, so I'd cancelled my Wellington-to-Palmerston-North bus ticket. I just won't use that part of my bus pass. Sue drove me first to an impressive overlook in the Rimutaka Hills, and then to the Fell Engine Museum. Fell Engines turned out to be small steam locomotives used to provide additional horsepower on a steep grade. The two-story museum included models of the settlements at both ends of the slope, with the higher village, of course, on the second floor. An unusually good documentary film was shown as an introduction to the collection. It explained how the engines worked, and in particular how the trains were kept braked and in control on the ... read more

I checked in to Room 523 about 6 p.m. It was fairly comfortable, though a twin, not a double. I'd been up for twelve hours and I was eager to have some supper and get to sleep. There was just one problem -- a minor one, I thought. It had been cold all day and the temperature outside was 12. The room, which had a decent-sized window, was also rather cold. I went downstairs to the desk and politely asked for a space heater. "I'm sure we've got one around here somewhere," the clerk said. "I'll go get it as soon as I have time." I waited 15 minutes, and then another 15. By that time I was getting pretty hungry, and I still had to go shopping. No space heater had arrived at my ... read more

Mel of the Buccaneer Lodge had been kind enough to rearrange room assignments to let me stay in my room until 1 p.m.. Regrettably, it was pouring buckets, so I did not try to walk out to visit the bay or the blue footbridge one last time. I did go to church, at Picton Community Baptist Church. The first hour of the service was worthwhile. There was a lot of singing to a guitar, with the lyrics projected on a movie screen to encourage the parishioners to join in. I joined in enthusiastically, though the only song I recognized was "Amazing Grace." There was some excuse for this, as the oldest copyright date on any of them was 1993. Even "Amazing Grace" had been altered by the interpolation of a new chorus between each verse. ... read more

I know; that's not how you pronounce "marina," and it isn't really cold enough for rime, though it's hard to believe that at 4 a.m.. The marina is fairly ancient, however. I turned left instead of right and walked there on Friday. There was an arching blue footbridge that swept up over a creek. I also spotted a Baptist Church and an alterations place callaed "A Stitch in Time." I tried to go to "Stitch in Time" in hopes that they might have a quick fix for my windbreaker's zipper; it broke on the train and I haven't been able to zip it up since. Fortunately it has an alternative velcro closure. "Stitch in Time" was not open, but at least I got to walk down an intimidatingly posted private road to reach it. At the ... read more
