My Worst Travel Mistake

What could be the worst thing that you can do, as a parent, when you’re out of the country and have asked somebody else, a relative or a guardian, to bring your child to you to wherever you are in this world? No DSWD permit. Uh oh! (Play music: dan-dan-dan-dannnn….) When my friends and I decided to climb Mount Kinabalu in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, I decided to leave my, then, 6 ½ year old son at home. I just started bringing him to longer trips and I still haven’t gauged how he would fair in mountain climbing. So, instead of dragging him to Kota Kinabalu, I thought of treating my Mom and my brother for a trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and bring my son with them. After our Kota Kinabalu leg, my friends and I ... read more

Since it took us 2 days to get to Delhi and another day to get to Jaipur, we considered April 18 as our official first day in India. Though we arrived in Delhi the previous night, we didn’t want to count it as part of the tour as we only slept at the hotel and checked out immediately after breakfast. So, really, today is our first day in India. And today, we get to see everything in broad daylight. And today, we get to give our first impressions of India. By 9am, we were picked up by our driver, Khumar, in his Toyota Innova. Following our instructions the previous night, he brought with him several strings to tie our luggage with, which were all placed on the car’s top load. Yes, we are going to travel ... read more

Hi, all!!! I joined an online photography contest hosted by Yen Baet, a female landscape photographer that I really, really admire. The price? An autographed print of her photo that won in a NatGeo contest. Sounds shallow? Not for me, especially when there are only a few female landscape photographers around. Though there are photographer judges for this contest, it will also help if my photo gets to have a lot of "likes." Hope you can help me out. To vote for the photo: 1. Please like Yen Baet's Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/YenBaetPhotography 2. When my HolyWeek Traveler friends told me that we needed to wake up early to catch the sunrise at Angkor Wat, I thought they were insane. Who would wake up at this ungodly hour to see the temple during sunrise when it’s still going to look like the same temple when we see it much later that day? But since it’s a one-against-all-kind of a situation, I gave in. We were all up and about as early as 4am. Even my son had to wake up early, too. By 5am, we were at the ticket sales booth buying our Angkor Passes. An Angkor Pass is required for all the visitors of the Angkor Park. This can only be bought at official ticket sales booths, and no other groups or organizations are authorized to sell these. Ticket ... read more

When my HolyWeek Traveler friends and I decided to book a flight to Taipei, we had no idea at all on what to see or do there. We were completely clueless. Add to that the fact that none of us speaks Chinese. Since we had a horrible experience earlier this year, getting lost in a Thailand and Laos countryside where no one speaks acceptable English, we were worried that we might end up being in the same scenario again. We were told that a lot of people in Taiwan do not speak any English at all. So, we asked help from our Taiwanese friends based here in Manila. Since we’re basically on our own with this trip, we asked them to list down the names of the different tourist spots in Chinese characters. This way, when ... read more

1. India Gate – If France has the Arc de Triomphe, India has the India Gate, a massive 42-meter structure in the heart of Delhi. The structure commemorates the 85,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who died during World War I. 2. Presidential Palace – Also known as the Rashtrapati Bhavan, this is the official residence of the President of India. Visitors are welcome to the Palace. Unfortunately, it was already closed when we got there and we only took photos of the building from behind the gate. 3. Parliament Street – This is the road leading to the Presidential Palace. Just merely driving past this road is already a treat as we can see different government buildings designed with the intricate Indian architecture. Before embarking on a daylong visit at the Taj Mahal, it’s very important to read up a bit of India’s history to appreciate more about it. We’re guilty of this. Originally, we all thought that Taj Mahal was a temple of love. Of course, we know now that we’re wrong. Thanks to hawkers selling cheap Indian books at the Red Fort in Jaipur, we were able to familiarize ourselves with India’s history during our long road trips from Delhi to Jaipur to Agra. Taj Mahal is actually a mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan to house the remains of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Construction began in 1631 and was finished 20 years after. Taj Mahal is an important structure in India as it symbolizes the technical and aesthetic perfection of the Indo-Islamic architecture. For the rest ... read more

We really have no plans of dressing up the way the Indian women do, but my friend, Tita Manang, had been wanting to buy a saree since the very first day we set foot here in India. We can’t really figure out why she wanted one. Her reason to wear it during special occasions in the Philippines was quite silly, since she has no Indian blood whatsoever. And since we’re also the “thrifty” kind of travelers, we find the saree too expensive, even if we’ve tried to haggle for the prices in the public market. But she was determined to buy one. And in the entire chaotic shopping spree we did in this one shop in Jaipur, another friend of ours, Shirley, got infected. She, too, wanted to buy a saree for no reason at all. ... read more

Sunrise at Taj Mahal

There is only one reason (and I reiterate, one reason only) why the HolyWeek Travelers chose India as our destination for 2011. Taj Mahal. That beautiful structure in perfect symmetry made for love. It’s in every traveler’s bucket list, and also in ours. Such a momentous event was this that we started out our day pretty early. A friend told me that Taj Mahal is beautifully photographed at sunrise. To have a different angle, he instructed me to shoot from the river behind the Taj Mahal. I fervently researched about this while in Manila, hoping I could have a mental template and bring it with me when I get to Agra. I only found two photos, actually, of Taj Mahal shot from the Yanuna River during sunrise. I saved these two photos and showed it to ... read more
