So... Here we go again, the final chapter in this set of adventures! New Zealand, Land of the Kiwi. The South Island- its hard to describe what you can see here. With in the space of two hours you can travel by the beach, through the rain forest, to glaciers, over snow caped peaks, through the brush lands.... New Zealand has it all. So lets begin this trip from the beginning- To start, I heard all sorts of horror stories of getting through Australia Customs... yet I had no problems there; I was pulled aside, emptied my bag, had my boots and tent taken to be cleaned in the customs line of Christchurch International... oh well. So, in New Zealand at last- I had great expectations for this country (and I was not disappointed). I spent ... read more
Hello again- So I thought I would sit down and update all of you on my adventures through Australia. Currently I am in Wanaka, South Island, New Zealand- Beautiful place! But this is about Oz, so I will begin there- I arrived in Sydney on the third of January, made it through customs, immigration, and all other lines one must stand in to gain access to a country... this has become all too familiar to me these days. Wandering around town I was able to find a backpackers’ to stay in and got in touch with a friend I met in South Africa and made plans to meet up with her the following day. After occupying my time with aimless wandering, it came time to meet up with Linda at Circular Quay. She was flying in ... read more
I'm back again after a staying unconnected- I have been busy and unable to find time to sit down and update you all, so here it is! First, before anything else- Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! I am missing everyone back home and wish all of you the best in this new year. I am back now in Bangkok, preparing to depart. I'm off to the land of Oz on the second. So, where to begin- I got to Thailand about a week early, I cut my trip to Qatar short. I would like to visit the country but it is not an easy country for backpackers to navigate. There is only one hostel I was able to find, and that was only through a chance encounter with a German who had just come ... read more
Hello! Well I thought I should continue the updating of my African adventures because today is my LAST day in Africa!!.... Time is flying by- Ive been gone for almost two months now, and have about three left. Almost at the half way point! So lets see... where I left off from the first update... I believe I was just getting to the Transkei. So, I stayed for about 10 days in Coffee Bay, in the Transkei region of South Africa. Beautiful! I had an amazing time there. Its a really remote area east of Port Elizabeth, stunning landscape though. There are two hostels in Coffee Bay, right next to eachother so the night life is quite good- lots of travelers in one area. You know you're in a rural area and an area not touched ... read more
Hello again... so its been a while, I havent been able to find the time (or the computer) to sit down and keep all of you updated. But here I am, I just published my article from Ethiopia - only a month late... Things have been great - now for the quick run down: I flew into Johannesburg, and from there went to Swaziland for a week, then back into RSA to St. Lucia, Durban, Coffee Bay (the Transkei is amazing - I fell in love with it...), Jeffrey's Bay - the best surfing in SA, and now I am updating you from Wilderness.... wow - lots of travleing in a month but its been a blast! Okay, now for a little more detail. I started off in JoBurg, spent four days there (honestly far too ... read more
Wow... being in Ethiopia is a real eye-opener. This is my first time in a true third world country, and it really makes you realize the different circumstances that people live in. Flying into Addis I got a great view of the surounding area - green and beautiful, but the streets are a different story. It is really hard to describe, poverty is everywhere - but it is just everyday life for the residents of this country. I met a friend in the airport, she is a PhD student working in the Bale Mountains National Park 450km southeast of Addis - we split a vehicle and she took me with her to the National Park to see the Ethiopian Wolf, an endimic wolf that only numbers 400. Rural Ethiopia is beautiful, villages and cities are eye ... read more
Well, I wasn't sure what to expect from Paris - I was only here for three days, and I ended up getting sick... so my negitive feelings towards the place might have some influences. Dont get me wrong, the city is great - like London there is a great deal of history. Seeing the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the views from Sacre-Cueur - all were wonderful and im really glad I came to see it. I think there are just too many people here for my likes. The city is very dirty - urin and garbage littering the streets. People do not believe in using the trash - littering is common practice. and hell, if you need to use the toilet - there are vast amounts of sidewalks that will suffice. The drivers here are crazy ... read more
Hello all!! I am alive and well, ive been in london for the past four days. Im staying at a Exploring the city, both the day time tourist attractions and the everpresent night scene. London never sleeps, plain and simple. I got a first hand tour of the West End from a local I met in the hostel. This is the party central of the city, lots of pubs and clubs... and even more people! Everybody is out having a good time, usually it involves some form of alcohol. Ive been meeting lots of people in the pub that the hostel runs, lots of people from Austrailia and and all over Europe - lots of really fun and interesting people. As for the touristy bit, Ive been all over; from the Tower Bridge and the Tower ... read more
Olympic Coast Line Bailey Johnston Hey all, So this is the first of many entries to come over the next year. This was my last trip guiding for the Outdoor Program, we spent five days on the Olympic Peninsula, an untouched streach of coastline in Washington. This was a great trip and a wonderful learning experiance. The area is beautiful, lots of sea stacks, arches and caves. Though we didnt really get a chance to hike into the forest (because we were on the beach the entire time) we did get some amazing sights from the top of a headland raising 60meters above the ocean. The shear cliffs on three sides was a little intimidating but really made for a good view. This trip also gave me a great view into leading multiday trips, though ... read more
