shoplifting - From: December Routine
last time I was in London I was wandering in Soho, and these bullet-bodied fierce men ran down a young gangly Jamacian boy, and took him HARD to the ground, rough and mean, and all the bystanders and the shopkeepers were cheering them on, and I yelled "WHY?" and they said "he probably stole something, Theif! Theif!" and I yelled loudly at all their righteous pinhead British selves "You Don't KNOW he did ANYTHING! You didn't see ANYTHING! Who do you all think you ARE!???" at the cops, too. Assholes.

religion - From: first verbal interaction with Kolkata police
I have been reading your points of views from your country as you explore mine. As per as religion goes,I feel its the worst thing humans created which divides them like nothing else. May be there was a requirement in stone/medieval ages when some wise (relative to that time, not now) men (like the messiahs) thought it would be beneficial to weave the uneducated and barbarian people in a fabric/group by the help of it, but in modern world (educated/enlightened with science) it turns out to be an absolute corrosive to human progress(as in science) as it does not match the intellectual standards of modern day man; and some evil minded people ( and some really stupid people) for power and pleasure (be it mental/monetary or any other form) have been taking full advantage. Most of us 'other mortals' just blindly follow the herd without ever questioning as we have seen our parents do the same and are too afraid to step out of the boundaries of non-reasoning.

observation good feeling bad ??? - From: bollywood and orange shirts
Hi , i was reading ur interesting blog when i came to realise how bad u would be feeling having to see different prices on the same day for the same item at different places. as such people are not honest as they are supposed to be even to indians. it is a bargain of "how well u know d market price ?? " ,than what d actual price is ? U can always stare at the seller when u feel u r being charged exessively ,to ur discomfort, but thats the way things work here. A pleasant "hi " increases the price of ur purchase . Any way u will have a great emotional and wonderfull experience, if u r ready. luv. -anish kumar

Great, Neutral view of the Indian ways, except for the comment "Indians are very proud people, and do not enjoy being yelled at by gaandu ferangis" No one that I know of, talks of the foreigners (firangi) like that. Nearly always they are respected. Even the educated class respect them for the development that the British brought to the country. Of course arrogance and being yelled at is never liked by any people anywhere in the world! :) Indians have voted their politicians (Article in a leading Indian magazine) at the same rank as pimps, because of this very arrogance which they show toward the common man. You will be hard pressed to find an arrogant Indian (unless he is a government servant!)

Hello Brendon! - From: countryside thoughts
Its really kind of you to post positive remark in front of this blog. Yes, Caste system is a really big problem here. But unlike many parts of India (especially northern India) Dalits( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalit)are not seriously abused by Upper Class (especially Aryan) in West Bengel. In Northern India where they are sometimes brutally killed by them. If you read local newspaper you might find at least one report in a week. The problem is India hasnt got a single eligible political party to run this country with ease. Not to mention about illiteracy, corruption, pollution, lack of minimal health service and so on&&.. Thank you very much for sharing these travel stories with us. Anyway, how long will you stay in Kolkata? Do youve any plan to travel rest of India? Im looking forward for your next blog.

I've read allmost all blogs written by you. I'm an Indian. I've lived all my life here in Burdwan(60miles from Kolkata). I think your blog is the 'real picture' of India. Many thinks(who never been to India) that India means Software capital of the world, Outsourcing hotspot etc. I don't like many things and bad habits of Indians. Like cruelty on dogs and other animals. Anyway, Yes I agree with the moneychanger view on politics. Only one party should run the country. But I think British should recolonise this country and rule untill we will be a devloped country.

the Mizo, people of the hills, >>The Mizo code of ethics or dharma focused on "Tlawmngaihna", an untranslatable term meaning that it was the obligation of all members of society to be hospitable, kind, unselfish, and helpful to others. Tlawmngaihna to a Mizo stands for that compelling moral force which finds expression in self-sacrifice for the service of others.<<

that's the name of the neighborhood you're in, right? i tried guessing from the wikitravel page for kolkata. ( http://wikitravel.org/en/Kolkata/Esplanade ) glad to hear you survived your inaugural taxi ride and passed through your inaugural anxiety flurry. still bracing for the inaugural stomach ailments, but i'm sure you'll pass through them with less notice than i would've given. stay cool, milky!
