| 8th October 2008 Som | religion - From: first verbal interaction with Kolkata police I have been reading your points of views from your country as you explore mine. As per as religion goes,I feel its the worst thing humans created which divides them like nothing else. May be there was a requirement in stone/medieval ages when some wise (relative to that time, not now) men (like the messiahs) thought it would be beneficial to weave the uneducated and barbarian people in a fabric/group by the help of it, but in modern world (educated/enlightened with science) it turns out to be an absolute corrosive to human progress(as in science) as it does not match the intellectual standards of modern day man; and some evil minded people ( and some really stupid people) for power and pleasure (be it mental/monetary or any other form) have been taking full advantage. Most of us 'other mortals' just blindly follow the herd without ever questioning as we have seen our parents do the same and are too afraid to step out of the boundaries of non-reasoning. |
| 8th October 2008 Sam | - From: how to tell if someone is truly poor in India Ha! I'm glad that the hat went to good use. Bellingham just isn't the same without you and you are greatly missed, but I'm glad your trip has been so rewarding- safe travels! |
| 1st October 2008 momma | caritas - From: September Budget you are experiencing the essence of caring. you are responding to people as persons, seeing their needs you feel human sympathy and then act with helpful kindness. some will name this the divinely inspired virtue of charity, others will call it being fully human. whatever its name or source it gives meaning to life. |

| 10th September 2008 momma | Ghandi on Ramanama - From: Left a good job in the city... "When a child, my nurse taught me to repeat Ramanama whenever I felt afraid or miserable, and it has been second nature with me with growing knowledge and advancing years. I may even say that the Word is in my heart, if not actually on my lips, all the twenty-four hours. It has been by saviour and I am ever stayed on it. In the spiritual literature of the world, the Ramayana of Tulsidas takes a foremost place. It has charms that I miss in the Mahabharata and even in Valmiki's Ramayana" |

"Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; Where words come out from the depth of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection; Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit; Where the mind is lead forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action- Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake." RABINDERANATH TAGORE |
| 12th August 2008 Anish kumar | observation good feeling bad ??? - From: bollywood and orange shirts Hi , i was reading ur interesting blog when i came to realise how bad u would be feeling having to see different prices on the same day for the same item at different places. as such people are not honest as they are supposed to be even to indians. it is a bargain of "how well u know d market price ?? " ,than what d actual price is ? U can always stare at the seller when u feel u r being charged exessively ,to ur discomfort, but thats the way things work here. A pleasant "hi " increases the price of ur purchase . Any way u will have a great emotional and wonderfull experience, if u r ready. luv. -anish kumar |

| 8th August 2008 momma | enchilada enchilada - From: food and drink you really have a hunger here, looks like you'd be willing to spend an entire day's usual allowance of food and drink money for this! |
| 5th August 2008 Amy | goats grazing - From: attitudes of Indians and Westerners Good post. There may be some hope for us - I did see goats grazing a hillside recently in Seattle. Seems it has been "discovered" they do a great job on the weeds, blackberries.... |
| 5th August 2008 Amy | More men - From: (almost) one month's budget in India There may be more men, but are they "quality" men that you would want your daughter to marry? Just wondering.... |
| 3rd August 2008 devin | a phenomenal post - From: Lungi Madness way to be a rapscallion on two continents. sadly, i think there may be many more restaurants in seattle with more stringent dress codes than you realize, but they're the sort of places america's happily insulated middle class might never even hear about. be careful around temples for a while! and if i eventually understood your facebook post, i wuz woo too. |
| 31st July 2008 Sonia | - From: (almost) one month's budget in India Sounds like you should become a nurse whenever you return i think you would find it very rewarding work. |
| 27th July 2008 Travellers-Post | Interesting Reading - From: attitudes of Indians and Westerners Great, Neutral view of the Indian ways, except for the comment "Indians are very proud people, and do not enjoy being yelled at by gaandu ferangis" No one that I know of, talks of the foreigners (firangi) like that. Nearly always they are respected. Even the educated class respect them for the development that the British brought to the country. Of course arrogance and being yelled at is never liked by any people anywhere in the world! :) Indians have voted their politicians (Article in a leading Indian magazine) at the same rank as pimps, because of this very arrogance which they show toward the common man. You will be hard pressed to find an arrogant Indian (unless he is a government servant!) |
| 25th July 2008 momma | Utterly helpless, trusting in God - From: attitudes of Indians and Westerners this blog will be disturbing for some. this blog made your momma happy and your daddy proud. |
| 23rd July 2008 momma | maybe compliments aren't going to your head - From: the people i've met and the Lok Sabha but your spatial humor sense is playing tricks: nice post from "Hong Kong"..... Wikipedia says West Bengal has the most 'bandhs' of any state in India, up to 50 a year. The strikes last several hours to several days. The Supreme Court of India banned them in 1998 but political parties still call for the protests. |
