Heading to Peru to spend 2 weeks in the jungle. This blog will either document the fun and adventure or serve as my last will and testament.

My sisters have called me The King of Unfinished Projects (I have an embroidered pillow to prove it) so just to spite them I’m going to finish this travel blog. We made it home last Saturday morning, mostly none the worse for wear. My back still hurt from the motorcycle wreck so I went to the Doctor on Monday and found out I’d broken a rib. The Doctor thought I was nuts because I wanted to take a picture of the x-ray and was quite excited by the news. I told her it just made the story of the trip that much better. My last post had us leaving the jungle for Bagua and then back to Chiclayo. On Tuesday we started our milk run to Iquitos from Chiclayo, first to Lima where we changed planes ... read more

We made it home this morning at 2:00. Apparently there was a fire in the fuel depot at Miami airport on Thursday and all the flights coming and going through there have been delayed. I'll try and get everything caught up with photos this weekend. It's great having a reliable internet connection again. This was from last Saturday (am I actually a week behind?). When we went to Chipe we took a couple of hours and went to Kusu Chigamai. It is a village just up the Kusu river from the old Mission Station. We took a short trip to visit the village in the late afternoon. ... read more

Sorry, this is a long one and it has almost 100 photos. The internet connection in Iquitos was killing me. We're finally in Lima and leave for the airport in about 5 hours so this will be my only post tonight. This is about the trip to Chipe. I left out the photos of Kusu Chigamai. I'll get them up next. We left Chiclayo for Iquitos Tuesday morning and then we head back to Lima Thursday afternoon. Friday morning we get the 7:00AM flight to Miami and then home to LA. I’ll catch you up on Iquitos in my next post. Saturday – Jungle time It’s 12:30. We were supposed to leave for Chipe this morning. About 3 hours ago Greg came in and said hurry up and finish packing we need to go. That was ... read more

Nuevo Horisonte (New Horizons) Today (Friday) we got in another taxi about 10:00 and made it to New Horizons by 12:30. It was only my 3rd time here but everybody commented on what a quick trip it was. Most of the road, except the last 25 miles or so, is paved now. It’s hard to imagine that when Larry and Addie first came to the jungle they were on gravel roads from Chiclayo. Now it is only the last 25 miles. The other things that are different are the compound has electricity (used to be a generator) and the station has a phone. It’s an odd site when you come up the little hill and see the sign for Nuezo Horizonte. It now has a white sign on the left that says 200 meters to a ... read more

Yes, this is the motorcycle wreck(s) story but you are going to have to read what happened in chronological order, and the wrecks weren't until the end. Montango Thursday was our first day to be in the real jungle. Bagua is still the edge of the jungle to me. A taxi took us (with Pastor Flores) to Salinas, about 30-40 minutes from Bagua. Salinas is right on the main highway and the Marañon River. We took a Huaral (pronounced waddle) which is a cable car/ OSHA worst nightmare. Greg assured me it had passed all the Peruvian safety inspections so we hopped on. The car zips along on a cable of indeterminate strength until it gets about halfway across the river. Then a broad shouldered gentleman pulls you across the rest of the way. In lieu ... read more

Sorry I've been radio silent. I've been writing and taking pictures but haven't been at in internet location long enough to upload anything. We are back on the coast in Chiclayo after going all the way down the Marañon River to Chipe and then past that to the Kusu River to visit Kusu Chigamai. I'm writing this paragraph Monday evening. We just got off the 8 hour bus ride from Bagua. The guys went to Santa Rosa but I knew this may be my only internet opportunity so I'll catch up as much as possible. I've got a ton of pictures. I'm going to put up separate posts based on what we were doing or where we were. Those that have heard about the mototcycle wrecks (yes, plural) will have to wait for the post on ... read more

This is going to be quick. Steve found us at the Lima airport (we'd never met) and we hung out until about 8:00. Took a taxi to meet Greg's "supplier." Those of you that attend Newhall Church of the Nazarene will be happy to know that this years surprise Christmas gifts have been ordered and will be picked up on our return. We had lunch with Itamar Coronel from the district office at a great Brazilian Churrascaria. Back to Lima airport for more waiting and then finally checked our luggage in for the flight. American Airlines allowed us 3 bags each with a limit of 50 lbs per bag, Star Peru allows you 20 kg (about 44lbs) total. After much pleading from Greg he got the overweight charge down to about $30.00. I don't remember much ... read more

Today is the day. I'm up at oh-dark 30 (after less than 2 hours sleep) and pick up Greg at his house. We need my truck to get to the airport. I travel a good bit for business and I pride myself on never checking luggage. When I'm going somewhere for work I hate to wait at check-in and baggage claim is a nightmare. Between Greg and I we checked 6 bags for this trip. One of the bags belongs to Larry. He's flying down tomorrow and has only about an hour after he arrives in Lima to make his connecting flight to Chiclayo. He's only bringing carry-on luggage so he can get through customs and immigration quickly. I have 12 soccer balls (sorry, futbols), a huge bag of candy and 8 frisbee knock offs in ... read more

My last post showed the map from LAX-LIM. I'm attaching a couple of maps of our in-Peru itinerary. Greg has scheduled quite the trip. We arrive in Lima early Tuesday morning. Greg needs to see a couple people in Lima before our afternoon flight to Chiclayo. Tuesday night in Chiclayo and then a Wednesday bus trip to Bagua (hopefully Larry makes his tight connection from Lima to Chiclayo). Thursday trip to Montango and back to Bagua. Friday trip to Nuevo Horizonte the Mission station). Saturday to Chipe. Sunday in Chipe and back to Bagua through several villages and towns. Monday bus back to Chiclayo. Tuesday flight to Lima and another flight to Iquitos. Wednesday in Iquitos. Thursday flight back to Lima and Friday we head back home. Seeing how this is a Greg Garman production I ... read more
