January 15th 2007

Macau became a colony of Portugal after the Portuguese reached Macau in the early 1550s. On 20th Dec 1999, Macau was returned to China, and ever since, Macau is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. Prior to 2006, the last time I visited Macau was in 1997 with my family and grandma. We only spent 3 hours in Macau, as we were on our way from Zhuhai to Hong Kong. It was a pity, as Macau is a fascinating place which has an unique mixture of Chinese and Portuguese heritage. Hence, in 2006, I decided to visit Macau and spend a longer time there to explore its historical sites and new attractions. Unexpectedly, the city is so attractive that I visited it 3 times in 2006! Another reason for my multiple visits ... read more

Yesterday afternoon, I went to Singapore Expo to see the Innovationation exhibition. Expecting long queues and huge crowds (because the exhibition is admission-free), I was very surprised when I saw nobody queuing and very few people in the exhibition. Nevertheless, the exhibition was an interesting, impressive and inspiring experience. It showcases the technological development in Singapore and how technology integrates into our lives and makes our lives better. Beside displays of old telephones and old computers and old mobile phones, there are plenty of hands-on high-tech display. There are also many interesting facts, such as "An average Singaporean sends 200 SMS every month" & "Singapore was the first in the world to set up a mobile phone network that could be used on an underground rail system"... After the exhibition, I have a better understanding of ... read more

Haze comes, haze goes

One year ago, I posted an entry about the heavy fog in Vancouver ("Fog comes, fog goes"). Now, I'm in Singapore, and I'm experiencing some form of "deja vu". For the past few weeks Singapore is shrouded in a haze, all thanks to the numerous forest fires in Indonesia. The haze is really an eye-sore. Not only visibility is affected, the smoke particles in the air also make one's eyes dry and irritated... (That's why I say the haze is an "eye-sore".) Last Saturday, the PSI (Pollutant Standards Index) shot up to 150. (A PSI level of 0-50 = good range. 51-100 = moderate range. 101-200 = unhealthy.) The air was so bad that I had a runny nose for 3 days... The air improved during the weekdays, but yesterday the air quality is deteriorating again, ... read more

Today I went back to VJC (Victoria Junior College) for its annual open house. Normally I go back to VJC every year for its open house, but last year I didn't go because I was in Vancouver. I'm one of the very rare people who went back every single year after I graduate from VJC, because my VJC art class had only 4 students and we were very close to our art teacher. Every year, I would go back to view the A-level art projects and chat with my art teacher. Today, I saw the A-level projects for this year and most of them are very impressive. One of my favourite is this tribal mandala made of sand and soil inside this classroom. Another of my favourite is an installation of panels depicting children using pop-art ... read more

NUS Rag 2006

August 12th 2006

Today is the NUS Rag Day 2006. Rag Day is a tradition in NUS (National University of Singapore) and it is an annual event where each of the different faculties and halls of residence builds a carnival-style float, integrates the float with a musical dance, and creates a spectacular show. This year (2006) is the first year where I participated in Rag as a spectator. In 2003 I joined Science Rag as a freshman, in 2004 I joined the Science Rag committee, and in 2005 I missed the Rag Day because I was doing my attachment in Vancouver, Canada. This year, due to heavy workload in school and other commitments, I didn't join the Science Rag team. Instead of building the float and entertaining my friends (like what I did in 2003 and 2004), this time ... read more

14th May (Sun) - We took a bus from Phnom Penh to the Cambodia-Vietnam border. The tiny bus was packed with passengers and the road was damn bumpy. At the Vietnam border, we queued for a long time because the immigration officers were paid by travel agencies to settle the passports of the people in the tour groups... Since we were not in any tour groups, we couly only helplessly watch the tour operators pushing piles and piles of passports to the immigration officers. After sometime, my mum and some fellow passengers in our bus were fed up and they complained loudly in front of the tour operators and the immigration officials... The tour operators, being scared by our loud voices, finally let us go through the immigration first... After another 2 hours, we finally reached ... read more

12th May (Fri) - We took a "deluxe" double decker bus from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, the capitol of Cambodia. (The bus is actually 2nd handed... The original signs and labels, written in Chinese, were still in the bus, which was probably made in Taiwan.) In Phnom Penh, after putting our luggage in the hotel, we went to explore the O Russei Market and the Central Market. We also went to a Buddhist shrine to watch a Vesak Day ceremony, and explored the area near the railway station and the Boeng Kak lake. The public infrastructure in Cambodia is rather poor, as the buildings look dilapidated and the roads are full of potholes. But nevertheless the city of Phnom Penh is bustling with energy and the streets are clogged with cars, motorcycles and bicycles. (The ... read more

9th May (Tues) - My mum and I flew to Siem Reap, Cambodia in the early morning. The flight was so early that my mum and I overslept and nearly missed the plane. In Siem Reap, my mum booked a taxi to bring us around. The driver brought us to Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat, where we saw magnificient ancient temples with intact wall carvings and decorations... In the evening we went up Phnom Bakheng, a temple hill complex, to view the sunset. Unfortunately, the sky was cloudy and we didn't manage to see the sunset. 10th May (Wed) - More and more temples... The driver brought us to the various temple complexes east and north of Angkor Thom. Some of the most spectacular temples were the Bandeay Srei (very beautiful, intact and detailed carvings), and ... read more

In 2006, we have holidays on 30th and 31st January (monday and tuesday) due to Chinese New Year. I originally planned to clear my homework at home during the holidays, but my mum suddenly booked a tour to Genting and "dragged" me and my sister along. In the end, we had to bring our homework up to Genting... (My sister was more pathetic than me. She got a 3000 words essay on Asian economics to write.) Genting was very crowded (as expected, because it was Chinese New Year). In the end, to maximise our time, we went to the theme park in the early morning when the queues were still short... After lunch, we went back to the hotel room to do homework (and to avoid the "peak period" and the long queues). At night, after ... read more

January 3rd 2006

I arrived at San Francisco's Greyhound depot on the morning of 31st Dec 2005. The idea of counting down and celebrating New Year in a foreign country made me pretty excited. Also, after travelling around Western Canada/USA alone for 2 weeks, I finally had company in San Francisco. My father has a friend, Uncle Danny, who lived in San Francisco. Uncle Danny and my father worked together in Hong Kong 2 decades ago. After my family migrated to Singapore, Uncle Danny migrated to USA and settled down in San Francisco. I was very lucky to meet Uncle Danny in San Francisco because he's working as a hotel manager and he allowed me to stay in his hotel for 3 nights! Somemore, his hotel was very convenient. (It was right beside Chinatown and was within walking distance ... read more
