4thAugust 2012 We left our Adels Grove campsite at about 8:15am and headed towards Gregory Downs. We saw several wallabies on the way. A road train, approaching us, appeared to be in a rosy halo, with the sun coming from behind the big dust cloud. It’s a very dusty road, we had to pull over to let the dust settle. We got some fuel at Gregory Downs and continued on a back road through Augustus Downs station. There are some very flat grasslands around Gregory Downs and Augustus Downs, the paddocks go on forever and the sky is huge. There was a lot of roadkill, and masses of birds of prey consuming it. We saw a couple of wedge tailed eagles, and a vast number of kites. We also saw six emus, and of course herds ... read more

29th July 2012 We left Lorella Springs at about 8am and got to Borraloola at about lunchtime. We bought fuel and a little food and filled the water tanks, and had lunch in town. A local aboriginal man came and had a chat with us, told us where he was from and where the water is bad. We called to see if we could book a campsite in Lawn Hill national park, however they were booked out. We camped near the Robinson River, just off a side road. Mike and the boys laid nets for cherubin. 30th July 2012 Mike retrieved one cherubin from the nets and placed in the freezer for use as bait. Two baby barramundi were in there too and were released. We stopped briefly at the Calvert River crossing, where Mum and ... read more

31stJuly 2012 We left our campsite at about 8:30am. We fuelled up at Doomadgee roadhouse in the morning, then had morning tea near the Gregory River crossing. Mum and Dad have decided to go to Burketown to see if they can get repairs or parts for their van suspension, and then camp at Leichardt Lagoon until we rejoin them after our trip to Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park in about 5 days. Mum and Dad were at Boodjamulla last year. So we parted ways just after 11am. We had lunch at a stopping point near Gregory Downs, and continued on to Adels Grove camp, arriving at about 3pm. We saw a flock of cattle egrets sitting among cattle on the way in, and also a wedge tailed eagle. Located in the remote north west highlands of ... read more

25th July 2012 Richard and Marion left early, at about 7:30am, to head home via Bitter Springs. We left our campsite at around 9am and had a swim in the lovely Bitter Springs. These are warm springs with natural vegetation (tall palms and pandanus) surrounding them, and you can drift downstream to stairs further down. Very worthwhile having a dip there; Kyle especially enjoyed his swim and is getting more confident in his swimming. I had a quick look at the art gallery in Mataranka, then we set off towards Roper Bar. We stopped in briefly at the Roper Bar store (selling everything from groceries to clothes). The road (Savannah Way – Roper Highway-Nathan Rd) is gravel here but not in bad condition. We camped at Lomarieum Lagoon, near St Vidgeon’s ruins. The ... read more

Mataranka 24th July 2012 We left Kakadu at about 8am and headed for Katherine. We did a big grocery shop, had lunch and drove on to Mataranka. We had a swim in the hot springs and also saw the replica “We of the never never” homestead, made for the 1981 movie based on the book by Jeannie Gunn. We camped in Elsey National Park campgrounds, a bargain for us at $15, the family rate. There are solar showers and flushing toilets, quite a nice spot. Marion and Richard head back towards Perth tomorrow so Mum made damper on the campfire. Richard and Marion kindly gave Mum & Dad and Mike and I a bottle of port. The boys were very excited to see their first cane toad. Alex remembered a lot of the identifying ... read more

July 21st 2012 We started the day in the cool pre-dawn on a boat cruise along Yellow Water and onto the South Alligator River (named before the explorers identified the species as crocodiles). The river is amazing, fringed with grasses with roots 3m long so they can float with the wet season, and with huge pink flowering water lillies, and pandanus. We saw lots of birds, including the jabiru (not always seen on the cruises), white chested sea eagle, and gorgeous azure kingfisher (who darts with amazing speed into the water). One jabiru caught a big fish. We saw big salt water crocodiles swimming and basking, and one snapping up a fish. A buffet breakfast was included in the tour, and was at the restuarant of Cooinda resort where we are staying (it has a campground ... read more

19thJuly 2012 We started the day with a visit to the Aviation Museum (with Mum, Dad, Richard and Marion). Very impressive to see a B52 there – they are pretty large planes. Very interesting displays of a wide range of aviation history. We then went our separate ways, as we had some errands to do (banking, some new boots for me as mine have given up the ghost after many years, some books for Alex and Kyle). We discovered Darwin sells cask wine, which we have not seen retailing for some time now. As we don’t think it is for sale in much of the Territory we decided we might buy two. I don't know what we were thinking, really. For our own protection, the territory laws only allow us to buy one. We could have ... read more

15th July 2012 We left Katherine and had morning tea and a swim at Edith Falls, just north of Katherine. This is a lovely spot for camping or day use, with scenic falls and a good swimming area. We had lunch at Hayes Creek, then continued to Litchfield. We saw the amazing "magnetic" termite mounds, which are sheet-shaped and oriented to reduce solar heat input. Incredible to think how a colony of insects can conceive and engineer these structures over decades! We had hoped to stay at the Wangi Falls campground but it was full, so we stayed at the nearby Litchfield Safari Caravan Park. We have natural bushy sites at the rear of the park, very quiet and well located to see Litchfield tomorrow. 16th July 2012 We saw wallabies and a dingo as we ... read more

11 July 2012 We ate a breakfast of sliced fruit and cut the rest of our fruit and veg into sandwiches and salads to comply with quarantine requirements as we left Kununurra and drove into the NT this morning. However it seems to be an honour system however, there was no staffed checkpoint. Apparently it is stricter entering WA, and we've been given some honey and half a watermelon by travellers going the other way. We drove through scrubby plains with a few hills, with what appeared to be some limestone outcrops. We had a look at Gregory's tree on the way past, it's a boab tree carved with the dates of Gregory's exploration departure and return dates. We were thinking of staying at the Big Horse Creek campsite but it was full, so we continued ... read more

8th July 2012 We left Parry Creek Farm just after 8am and drove the short distance to Kununurra. We went to the Information Centre and booked a river cruise for tomorrow, did some shopping and set up the camper at Ivanhoe Village Caravan Park. We were able to wash the car, which was absolutely coated in red dust. We drove to Kelly's Nob lookout, Ivanhoe Crossing (river crossing) and through some of the agricultural area, which is absolutely lush. We bought a few vegetables but not many as we may not be able to take them to the NT. The weather here is gorgeous, 30ish and sunny (I see it is about 16 in Perth - we are skipping this part of winter :D ). The boys had a swim in the pool and we made ... read more
