Back to the Future Last day in our Barcelonian/Birthday trip. Finished our Spartan breakfast, left our small luggage at the storage facility of the hostel and made our way for the 2nd most visited site in the city, which is also the 2nd largest soccer stadium in the world. None other than the legendary Camp Nou, home to Barcelona F.C. The football club has become a Catalan institution, hence the motto Més que un club (More than a club). They were founding members of La Liga in 1928, and, together with Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao, they have never been relegated from the top division. The club were also the first La Liga champions, winning a total of 18 La Liga, 24 Copa del Rey, 7 Supercopa de España, 2 UEFA Champions League, 4 UEFA ... read more

April 27th 2008

Easter Sunday 27 of April 2008. Everyone in Greece is waking up with a hangover, slowly making their way towards their grandparents house in the village, ready to roast a lamb to celebrate Christ knows what, whereas I am glad to report that we are going to be immersed in one of the greatest global sporting events, an F1 race. A short 15 minute walk away through the Montmello village took us to the famous Circuit de Catalunya. Due to the amazing planning we got our general admission (peluse) tickets with the minimum ... read more

Modern artist vs. capability First stop of the day, three minutes walk from the hostel and next to the Las Ramblas, is the first Gaudi monument of the day, Palace Guell, more of that later though. Following our visit to the Palace, Karen and I separated. She chose to go for a walk at the beachfront whereas I walked to Picasso's museum which is located in the gothic quarter. Before the split we dashed off quickly at the nearby Reial Square to see the lamp posts which were Gaudi's first commission. Pablo Picasso and the modern art movement Pablo Picasso's family moved to Barcelona from Galicia in 1895, when Pablo was 13 years old due to his dad getting a job teaching art at the city's school of fine arts. Not only was his dad ... read more

April 25th 2008

My 30th and Catalonian Cuisine After 9:15am on the 25th of April (2008) I am entering the 3rd decade of my life. Our societies do seem to make a huge fuss about birthdays. Our birth is something we can't control, or achieve, however the odds of us actually existing are so high that I do agree on the principle of celebration. In my opinion only the 18th birthday should be noteworthy due to the legal repercussions of adult life. For the next 10 years I am however going to use a different first word when asked about my age. This fact should render the day some significance to say the least. My birthday this year coincided with the Greek Orthodox Easter weekend. However, since I live in protestant England I already had my Easter bank holidays ... read more
