This post is a bit outdated - tried to post just after Easter but my computer was having difficulties. Anyways, enjoy my last post of this trip: This will probably be my last post until my next trip to Ghana. (Yes - I am already thinking about it!) Although I’m doing a lot each day, nothing is very touristy like last year so its hard to write an interesting blog. However, since the last post, there are a few things I could share while I sit here and eat a mid morning snack of groundnuts. I celebrated my second Easter in Ghana. I can’t remember where exactly I was last year at this time but I was probably enjoying a beach somewhere in Ghana. This year, I stayed in Accra and watched the city shut down. ... read more

After the long and treacherous journey to Mole National Park in the Northern Region of Ghana last year, I vowed to never go there again. Despite not seeing elephants at the park last year, the 19 hour (or more) journey on Ghana’s worst roads was just not worth it to me. Strange enough, when Poppo propositioned me to join him there as he acted as a tour guide for the Volunteer Abroad January and February groups I decided I would go and I WOULD see the famed elephants. Our departure from Accra began at 5:00pm sharp. The group, all 11 of us, headed for the OA bus station for our trip to Kumasi. I was once again reminded why I am not fond of traveling with large groups of people: everyone has their own schedule, their ... read more

Hello everyone! It’s been a long time since I’ve updated this blog. Since I had a long nap around 6pm, I can’t fall asleep so blogging seems like the best way to make use of my time. To start off, I was really sick for the first week and a bit that I was here. Finally after I’d almost had enough, I decided to go to the hospital and see a doctor. I spent 4 hours at the hospital waiting to see a physician, having blood tests, waiting for results, etc. Everyone I talked to, including the doctor, assumed I had malaria, which was not the case. Eventually I was just given a prescription which worked wonders in 2 days. I’m feeling a lot better now and my life here is running much better. While I ... read more

Back to Ghana and things are excellent! After a stressful and tedious journey here, I am getting back into the African lifestyle. Wednesday after I arrived, I went with Nana Kwasi to reggae night at Labadi beach. There were bands playing reggae music, dancing, singing... all the wonderful things that Ghana is. The next day I reunited with Poppo, Kofi, Romeo, Kersten and a bunch of other people from Volunteer Abroad. It was so good to see them. I got back into the Ghanaian foods (kenke and peppe) Other than that I really haven’t done much. I guess I should get used to that, seeing as I have no schedule, no plans, no duties, for the next three and a half months - a lifestyle which I am completely okay with!!!! Currently I’m just listening to ... read more

Well...as you can assume from the heading, I am now in Amsterdam eagerly waiting my flight to Ghana!!!!!! Things went a bit smoother today, but I was still not over my bad luck. After I checked out of the hotel I caught the airport shuttle which dropped me off right where I thought I needed to be at SEA-TAC. I went to check in with North West Airlines and they said they couldn't issue my boarding pass because it had already been issued by Horizon/Alaska Air when they re-booked me yesterday. I guess the lady who helped me yesterday had no idea what she was doing because when I asked her if I needed a receipt she said I didn't need anything and that I would have no problem checking in. Then I had to trek ... read more

Ghana take 2 - worst luck ever!!!!

WORST LUCK EVER!!!!!!! (please note the sarcasm to follow) Thanks to the lovely west coast fog, my flights had major issues today. Got to the airport in Vancouver in record time - thanks Jesh, and I boarded the aircraft bound for Seattle. I was early, so they said I could take the 9:00am flight, rather than the 10:30am flight to Seattle to give myself more time to make my connection to Amsterdam. The pilot attempted to land in Seattle twice (note the word ‘attempted’) but the fog was too thick so we re-routed to Portland, Oregon. Luckily for me there were 3 other planes that were supposed to land in Seattle, all of which were re-routed to Portland. Thus, I got to stand in the customer service line for a cool hour and a half while ... read more

I arrived home yesterday and let me just say, it is COLD here. Coming from at least 30C sun, this rainy/cold BC weather is not enjoyable. I want to go back to Ghana for more reasons than just the weather. It is a huge adjustment to be back in North America. I cried on the bus ride because there were only 6 people on the bus, everyone was Obruni, and there was so much English. Anyways, I'm sure I will re-adjust in time. Maadwo madanfo(s)! -- good evening friend(s)! I've been in Accra since Monday and I've been having a really awesome time. I came to visit a friend and to settle the details of my flight. I'll give you the day by day, play by play: Monday: Carly was really sick so she decided to come to Accra with me, rather than going back to Kumasi. We left Takoradi by tro tro because the STC bus staff were being very difficult. Long story short, there are occasions where being white in Africa is really NOT fun! When we got to the Volunteer Abroad house in Accra, I felt so glad to be 'home'. The comforts of a fridge, running water, and fans are amazing. After being in Banko, and even Kumasi (the second largest city in Ghana), Accra ... read more

Hello everyone!!! As always, I'm sending you the fondest greetings from Ghana!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm now in Takoradi for the night because tomorrow I'm going to Accra. I've changed my plans a bit so I will not be going back to Banko until Wednesday. I'll be in Accra for a few days to clear up some business with flights and to visit a friend. This weekend we added another girl, Carly from Toronto, to our travelling group. Jessi, Sophie, Carly and I all went to Green Turltle Lodge on the coast. We met our friends Joel and Brittany, who are from Coquitlam, and Kofi and Romeo. We had a really great weekend relaxing on the most gorgeous beach! The place was fabulous. White sand for miles, no villages for at least 30 minutes... absolute paradise. The sky is ... read more

Maaha! Good afternoon, for those of you who don't speak the Twi. Becaue my last few weeks in Ghana are going to be jam packed with travelling and visiting, I decided that today, my 'down' day, would be a good time to fill everyone in on some info. Last weekend I was in Kokrobite. It was definately my least favourite weekend in Ghana, but it was still okay. It started off with too much Paul and ended with a stint in the hospital. Paul, my 'friend' from Ada Foah who came to visit is most definately a nice guy. Unfortunately his undying love for me is a bit of a problem. Basically he would not leave when we got back to Accra and Jessi and I had to spin a few white lies to shake him. ... read more
