Singapore! Upon exiting the train station, we realize that we are in a quiet, tree lined neighborhood in Singapore. A neighborhood that doesn't have any access to public transportation! It's only 150km or so to the equator, and even at 8am, the heat sure feels like it! Trung and I start using the rubber express (that's how you say you're using shoes, right?) and we naturally just walk towards the towers of downtown, a few km in the distance. Well dressed people are walking down the perfectly clean sidewalks also towards downtown. It's rush hour on a Monday morning. Eventually we decide to set up camp at a coffee shop, load some maps on our computer and find the backpacker district so we can explore some hotel options. I find a Tom'n'toms, which is a Korean ... read more

Kuala Lumpur! We arrived in Kuala Lumpur from Phuket on our Air Asia flight about 2 hours behind schedule, which put us on the tarmak around 1:30am. As Air Asia is a 'discount' carrier, we landed at the 'discount' terminal, which means we got to literally walk about 2km across the tarmack of the airport to get to immigration and our luggage. Once we're all settled and through customs, the bus to the city is easily availalbe for about 8 'Malaysians'. We don't know what 'Malaysians' are called yet! We found out later they are called Ringgets ;) the bus ride is about 75 km, or 1.5 hours driving on the great and plentiful highways in KL. The bus drops us off at KL Sentral, which is supposed to be the main 'downtown' station for the ... read more

Koh Tao > Phuket Our ferry from Koh Tao pulled in to the Southern ferry port near Surat Thani around 3:00pm, after saying goodbye and leaving Koh Tao around 10:30am. I had bought a package deal from my dive resort for 800 baht to have the ferry and bus arranged to take us directly to Phuket from Koh Tao, so the bus was waiting on the pier to take passengers onwards. After jumping on the bus, which was quite comfortable, it pulled out towards the village of Surat Thani, about 45 minutes away. Once there, the bus dropped us off at a small eatery on the side of the road to 'transfer busses', where a nice man suggested we spend an extra 300 baht for an 'express' bus to Phuket, otherwise we wait for our bus ... read more

Bangkok > Koh Samui We've been in Bangkok for the past two days, our second time visiting the city in as many weeks. We arrived here 2 weeks ago, and spent 4 days wandering the city, before jetting to Udon Thani and crossing into Laos for 5 days. We returned for 2 days and now we're on our way south! Our flight to Surat Thani on the southern coast of the Gulf of Thailand is scheduled to leave at 10:50 from Sumbarnathumi Airport. We decided to catch a cab at 7:00am to miss Monday morning Bangkok rush hour, when the entire city turns into a parking lot. The airport is giant, and the structure is really interesting. Now that we're here for a 2nd time, I can appreciate it more! The flight is relatively standard, and ... read more

Our bus pulled into Siem Reap at about 3pm. Its the hottest ever, I think about 38 celcius before the humidex. Mr. Lucky, our hilarious Tuk Tuk driver from Phnom Penh called his 'Brother' John in Siem Reap to let him know we were coming. He's going to give us a 'free' tuk tuk ride to our hotel. He's at the bus station, as promised, with our names neatly written on a board, which is a nice touch. He does the usual TukTuk driver special and tries to get us to go to his hotel (or, the hotel where he gets a cut). I had emailed another hotel to reserve a room and the hotel confirmed, so I got John to bring us there first. "We'll check it out and if we need to switch, we'll ... read more

Sorry everybody, the tenses in this one are all wrong, but I thought it's about time to post this! Also, its kind of long and depressing at times :( The night train pulls in at about 7am, the air is hot hot hot and sticky. I'm instantly sweating. We must be in Saigon. The station is relatively shiney and new, compared to everywhere else in Vietnam. We met an Aussie/Chinese guy on the train, Kez, who came with us to our hotel. He found a place down the street eventually, and we decide to meet up later for sightseeing. After getting all checked in, we headed out on a walking tour of Saigon. We passed by the Post Office, the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Opera House and many more city sights. The city is ... read more

Our bus has finally arrived from Hue, after 16 hours of semi-sleeper bus goodness through the dark Vietnamese countryside... its 6 or 7am or something, and its already hot in the quickly growing city of Nha Trang. The city is stretched on a thin strip of beach, sandwitched between the mountains and the ocean. Our hotel is central, about 100 feet from the beach. Not too shabby for $20/night (for both of us)! As soon as we arrive, I head out to see the sunrise and what the beach is all about while Trung tries to compose himself after the long bus ride. As I sleepily walk out to the beach, I'm greeted with 10 foot, slow breakers on the calm water, white sand, and a cabana club/brewery called the Louisiane Bar opening up for the ... read more

Our stay in Hoi An and Hue has been fantastic. The flight from Hanoi to Danang airport in the centre of Vietnam was very smooth, save for some airport antics typical of Vietnamese travel. Nothing went as planned or announced. Check-in was a mass of people rushing the counter and our gate actually had another plane that was flying somewhere else parked at it so our Jetstar plane just taxied to another gate, which we could see out the window so we went there. Somehow it all went smoothly and we got to where we wanted to go. Danang airport was one of the main bases for the American military, as we're only about 20 miles from the old demilitarized zone of the North-South Vietnamese border. I seem to recognize the airport with its palm trees ... read more

We've just finished our showers and breakfast after the overnight train from Sapa. We're scheduled to leave for the Perfume Pagoda (Chùa Hương) on a day trip in three hours time. A 2 hour bus journey is fairly painful running on no sleep, not to mention that a nice, cold rain starts just as we arrive at the river to catch a boat to take us to the Pagoda. Chùa Hương is an important pilgrimage site for many Vietnamese, and we're heading there at the beginning of the lunar new year, the busiest time for visitors. The perfume pagoda is at the centre of a vast complex of caves, temples and pagodas. The geography is similar to Ha Long bay, only inland. Huge towers of limestone with sheer faces appear out of the mist, with rice ... read more

Trung and I started our journey to Sapa at 7:30pm at the Ga Ha Noi (Ha Noi train station). Tip for fellow travellers, you need to go to Station 'B', behind the real train station. I wasn't with Trung, so I paid a boy 50 cents to walk me the 5 minute walk around the block to the right station. The ticket wicket staff at the 'B' station point me to another building outside the station. The people in the 'tour' building point me towards the ticket wickets. Another tourist points me towards the dark, outdoor space in-between the buildings. Everyone in each place tells me that its ok to 'wait here' for my ticket. I have a 'tourist' voucher, but no real ticket, and the train comes in 1/2 hour. After some time, I sit ... read more
