In Poggersdorf (near Klagnefurt) - tomorrow night (saturday), I will be attending a birthday party for who knows who... a friend of a couch surfer. I will hopefully surf nearby for 1 or 2 nights. Following - I will head to the autobahn on-ramp, and stick out my thumb --- to Vienna! Monday and Tuesday seem to be decent days; no rain or snow... let's see what happens! (Bologna and Venice/Padova/Chioggia blog is delayed ... sorrry!) My backpack is too large. I have a jacket and a sweater that I will probably never use again. I think I'll ditch them on the side of the road, or leave them here in Poggersdorf for other surfers (if they get cold!!)... read more
So... a few things changed. No big deal- I've started couch surfing in Klagenfurt because things with my 'friend' here didn't work out so well. Bah! Sorry I haven't posted much about Bologna, Chioggia and Venice - I've been wrapped up with a tight budget, and finding new and spontaneous places to stay!!! And - the keyboards are weird here, the Z and Y have moved :) ... read more
Florence (Firenze) So far, I’ve always been a little sketched out when I first meet up with a couch surfer/host. Trying to figure out his or her truths, as couch surfing is maintained as faith based service, is a relatively difficult task. You never know what or who you’re really going to meet. Florence wasn’t an exception. I arrived in Florence in the early afternoon on a Thursday ( I think?). When I exited the bus, I called my soon-to-be host to let him know that I’ve arrived. I didn’t know at the time; I thought maybe I was being stood up; but Manfredi, my Florence host hadn’t arrived yet to pick me up, nor had he and I exchanged consistent and easy to follow instructions on the where to and how’s of navigating through ... read more
Siena (Sienne) Arriving in Siena was moderately tricky. After exiting the rail, I want to the Tobacconist (they sell bus tickets, coffee and cigarettes, along with souvenirs and knick-knacks), to purchase a bus ticket. I was to take the 3 or the 10 bus from the stazione to Gramsci Square (piazza). I unboarded the bus a bit too early - asking with hand gestures (no, not the middle finger) an elderly lady if I was at the wrong spot. She was headed the same place, and eventually she simply had me follow her. On arriving at Piazza Gramsci, Tatiyana, my couch-surfing host, requested that I wait at the bar. Gramsci square is a bus stop, surrounded by medieval buildings converted for modern use: cafes, purse shops, bars, etc. I waited under an awning decorated with ... read more
I saw the david thing, a couple of graves... got drunk the first night I was here and was a passenger on a scooter whilst inebriation. I'm alive, but don't have anything else to say. I'll try to post soon! Meh.... read more
Rome, The Chianti Hostel, Couch Surfing in Rome, the Rail From the Airport (yes, this is backtracking to Friday morning), I took a bus called the "Leonardo Expressway." That's right folks, they named it after a TMNT - from the other airport the rail is called "Raphael." They have yet to make a Michaelangelo and Donatello. On the train were 2 American girls, both from the upper east coast - one from Smith College, and the other from a college nearby. Waiting for the train to leave, we chatted for about 10 minutes ... they've been to Rome before and were familiar with the Roma Termini (the main Roman Train Station). I figured, since I didn't think I could check in so soon (it was about 7:45am), we could grab a coffee. After 5 minutes of ... read more
It's 4am - my train for Siena leaves at 6:30am. I'm going to sleep in the common room of the hostel for 2 hours... if I stay in the bed, I'll probably not wake up. I haven't posted about walking the city with Noelle, or meeting up with Flaviano from couch surfing dot com, or the stories of Brazilians, Argentines, Ukrainians, Indians(not Native Americans), drunken Americans, So. Californians, Aussie girls, and one Jr. High Drop Out from D.C..... amongst others. Sorry to let you down, but I'm going to write the blog while I'm on the train to siena -- please check back soon! Pace, Anthony... read more
Saw the Vatican today... I took very few pics -- it started to distract me from looking around at everything. I checked out the Vatican museum, then went on to St. Peters -- pics posted soon... read more
