Look forward to hearing more about your wonderful adventures in Armenia and England and seeing more photos. |

| 24th July 2008 amw | - From: Izzy's b'day & Photos Happy birthday Izzy from the Wells Stiewing Fitzsimmons clan! Love reading the blog, of Levon's magical root cellar and hearing of the many adventures, culinary and otherwise... In one day in Iceland, members of our party ate whale, pony and kangaroo. For some strange reason, they passed up the sheep brains terrine. We're home now, post jet lag. Sending you all love and wonder- xxxooo |

| 23rd July 2008 Ann | same here - From: Izzy's b'day & Photos My congratulations to you as well, Gayle, that labor business isn't easy! My daughter Sara has a friend from Russia and the friend's mom gave me a present on Sara's birthday - and I hadn't even met her at that point! I asked Sara why, and she replied 'for having me, I guess'. So, happy Izzy's birthday to you! -- Ann (Sam's sister) |
| 23rd July 2008 Ann | - From: A day full of blessings I think I'm being inspired by Levon to carve out a basement in WV-land, limestone is pretty soft, right? I have almost 50 years until I'm 94 after all -- Ann |
| 23rd July 2008 Ann | Happy Birthday! - From: A day full of blessings Happy Birthday Izzy! I don't know if it is your 16th birthday, but if so, maybe you can take over the driving from Melik (just don't bring his driving habits home) -- Ann (Wren and Anna's Auntie) |
| 23rd July 2008 Ann | alternative building techniques - From: How to Build a Village House in Armenia Did you have any discussions about straw bale? -- Ann |
| 23rd July 2008 Ann | what a lot of cement - From: How to Build a Village House in Armenia Wow - looks like these houses are made to last -- Ann |
| 23rd July 2008 Niel | Way to blog Gayle! - From: A day full of blessings Thanks for taking a crack at blogging. It's good to get your take and a picture of Izzy with his present: the sports-peace-ball in minituare. The full size version must be in Cullman somewhere. Anyway, I'm not surprised your entry tells the story of the Armenian tunnel-diggin-grotto man. And he's still not tired of digging. I bet it's amazing. Is it cool down there, too? He should be made an honorary citizen of Alabama, or given the key to Gordo. Anyway, I can't wait to welcome you back home; but make sure to enjoy your last few days in Armenia. Looks like the trip has been just wonderful. Thanks to all for the blog. It's been fun to read the entries and the comments. |
| 23rd July 2008 Kappy Laning | Armenian Rapper like dancing..cool! - From: Day 9 - The Last Day of Work well it would be so fun to explore the roots of dance styles! hope your last 3 days are full of wonder! |
| 23rd July 2008 fred h | - From: Day 9 - The Last Day of Work This is great, reading what you all have been experiencing, impressive that everyone has been doing all this hard work in hot conditions. But all these buckets of concrete--do they not have wheelbarrows in Armenia? I second that previous commentor about Stuart getting a pair of pointy toed Armenian shoes! Hope you all have a speedy and safe return. |
| 22nd July 2008 Ann | congrats! - From: Day 9 - The Last Day of Work That is great that you got to the end of the cement job by your last day. That house will probably last forever - perhaps Hovsep will raise his kids and grandkids there too. You all deserve new shirts with extra long sleeve to accomodate your extra long arms. -- Ann |
| 22nd July 2008 Ann | lunchtime - From: Armenoenglish It's lunch time here, I only wish I could have some Hi Lunch chicken. |

| 20th July 2008 Romey | Go Big Brother Stuart! - From: Day 7 Nice to have a brother to look out for you, eh, Wren? I'd love to hear more about the party. So cool that you get to go out with local folks. How's everyone's health? -- heat plus the trots plus cement hauling has got to be pretty grueling. Let's hear more from the rest of y'all...Fun to get different perspectives. Romey |
| 20th July 2008 Ken | fun summer - From: Day 6 Hey crew. I bet the next time you pass by a constuction site and they are pouring 8 to 10 yards of cement in about 20 min. it will make your work and time warp into Armenia mean that much more. It sounds like next year we all need to go to WV and work at Ann and Tonys, painting and grounds maintenance. That comment was for the Droege crew but if the others there want to come along I am sure it would be ok. They would have to bring there own bucket. You all have fun and check out Barretts web site I think he will be adding pics of him on fire that are real cool. He just toasted his ears a little bit. Ferae says hey |
| 19th July 2008 Susan Bosovich | A face for your name, Leo - From: Day 5 - It's Starting to Get Very Hot A message for Leo: Looks like you've got a great team working with you there. I am glad you are working Melik hard though he's still smiling! I am envious of all of you being there! To make do I am working on a build here...framing for a 4-plex. Totally different than building there but I'm getting in good "working order" for my trip. Count down for me, 12 days to touchdown in Armenia.... |
| 19th July 2008 Ann | a full day - From: Day 6 It isn't every day that you are doing heavy duty manual labor (benign though it may be) in the morning and then go to the ballet at night - I hope you had time to get the cement out of your hair! Stay safe, don't trip on any exposed rebar, and don't say the wrong thing to the wrong person and wind up a bride (or groom!)in a wedding procession! -- Ann P.S. Thanks for the pictures - I love them. |
| 19th July 2008 Bob and Eleanor | temperature - From: Day 5 - It's Starting to Get Very Hot I just checked the temperature at your place: 84 degrees at 10:30 pm.And tomorrow no relief - high 99. Not too different from here in Rockville. Hope you have air conditioning at the hotel. Hang in there. Love, Bob and Eleanor |
| 19th July 2008 Kappy Laning | WAshington DC event - From: Day 5 - It's Starting to Get Very Hot hello dear family...sorry to hear about the runs...hope you are all better now and drinking lots of bottled water. We had VIP parking, reception and seating at the Marine Review last night..a perfect night for it...very impressive...I would have been happier if there was some balance..like a choir singing a peace song as part of the presentation.. love and hugs to you all, kappy |
| 19th July 2008 fred | very cool - From: Day 5 - It's Starting to Get Very Hot What a great thing you guys are doing. saw your blog for the 1st time ( 1st time looking at any blog actually) and loved seeing the pix and reading your updates. After we get off this site , Kristina wants to GoogleEarth your travels. We'll be pouring concrete here ourselves on Monday, the shop floor, but not in buckets. We look forward to more. |
| 19th July 2008 Romey | Immodium, yum yum - From: Day 5 - It's Starting to Get Very Hot Hope you are all staying hydrated and happy despite your run-in with St. Gregory. I'm sooo glad Anna's having fun and that you all are getting to know the family whose house it is, and have met some other fun teenagers (who speak Armenian! Amazing!) Can you go out in the evening on your own or is it not safe for that? Take some pictures of people milling around town. I want to see a bit more of what life is like there...The pictures of the old ladies making lavash was very cool. The hotel loooks fancy from the photos -- but it's small and funky? (How about a picture of one of your rooms...) Have you tried the napoleons yet? Jen says they are amazing. We've been pow-wowing with Molly and Steve about house plans and strawbale design for the last three days, about 12 hours a day, so I've had no time for emailing, house cleaning, etc.. Bizzy has been amazingly easy-going without any big sisters to annoy, and adores Molly and Steve. So its all been quite fun. I think I'm going to take Biz up to Milford this week for a couple of days...Fia's mouth sores are falling off (and her disbudding scabs) so she make be fully recovered by the time you get back...Otherwise everything is the same here. Hot hot hot. I miss you guys... Romey/Mama |
| 19th July 2008 tammy | what a bunch! - From: Day 5 - It's Starting to Get Very Hot You all are really something! I am doing my best right now to help humanity by sending you all lots of love and fond thoughts and also best wishes to the family whose house you are building. That's all I can manage right now as I'm at milford, lounging on the front porch, lolling in the stream. I love the blog and the photos. (Some of the people in these pictures are getting mighty grown up looking.) Love to all, Tammy |
| 18th July 2008 amw | Wonders of the World - From: Day 5 - It's Starting to Get Very Hot Dear Armenian crew, it's the Iceland crew here sending you love- Alice and Gary near the top of the world... Sounds like you all are doing a great job. Anna would fit right in around this locale- many redheads and blonds. We've had on parkas, hats and long underwear in the last week. We are basking in arctic heat of @ 65 degrees at its high, and walking on pumice and volcanic rock with every step- it isn't purple though, but a dusty off white. The entire Island is a rock garden at this time of year. We've seen puffins, and shags and whales...Today I and my sister-in-law went snorkeling in glacier water, @ 37 degrees! Hearing the sounds of a band playing outside our window now in the center of Reykjavik. Much love and an arctic blast to all of you devoted folks in Armenia! |
| 18th July 2008 Ann | a remedy - From: Day 5 - It's Starting to Get Very Hot Maybe a little purple pumice in your cereal will take care of St. Gregories' revenge - I hope you all get back to regular soon - stay cool! Some WV news - a giant tree fell across the driveway - time for some chainsaw fun -- Ann |
| 18th July 2008 Niel | What an adventure!! - From: Day Three 13 years is a very long time to spend in a hole. I'm glad Izzy didn't have to spend several days there, though being rescued would, I'm sure, have made a welcome birthday gift. But, seriously now, thanks for making the blog. It's great to see the pictures and read the entries. I especially like the local twist on English, but I'm still trying to figure out how sweets and towers come in handy when you're swimming. Perhaps they help you luke alife. I wish I could be there and have some lavash! Niel PS--It's hot here too |
| 17th July 2008 Ann | What about lakes One thru Six? - From: Day Four Sounds like a great trip, but I wish you were here helping to paint our shed. Thanks for keeping us up to date! |
