I am from the Forces and my profession gives me lot of opportunities to travel and see new places. I have been travelling since I was a kid, first with my parents, and then on my own. My area of expertise is Trip Planning & Budget Travel. I have done a number of Backpacking trips, some with my friends and few on my own. I love to see new places, meet new people & learn everything bout that place. I hate organized tours & package trips, I feel the true essence of travelling lies in experiencing that place with the locals, live like locals. I have covered almost the entire India, and few places abroad...but my quest has not ended, in fact my hunger for Travel keep increasing with each trip.

With our last destinations in mind, we set off towards Vancouver & Victoria. As the highway goes all along US-Canada border, we crossed Princeton & Hope on our way, with a small halt at Manning Park where the ever-so-friendly ‘Gophers’ greeted us literally with ‘open arms’. These guys look right out of a Chip & Dale cartoon, and were climbing all over us to grab a bite. Finally, our Road-Trip came to an end as we reached Vancouver. Arriving at Vancouver, successfully rated as the most livable city in the world, we were pleasantly surprised by the change in scenery, temperature & demographics (not to forget the Hindi & Punjabi FM channels as well). Having spent the last eight days in hamlets & towns inhabited by mere thousands, the million-odd population of Canada’s second largest city ... read more

Kelowna’s great climate, sparkling lake & mountain views offer visitors an array of activities, alongside discovering their numerous wineries & orchards. Our farmhouse was an old ancestral 19th century wooden mansion amidst vast expanse of farm land, and our gracious host Mark & his wife looked after us nicely with tours of his farm & some farm fresh eggs for breakfast. Once known as the mecca for ‘peaches & beaches’, the Okanagan Valley is now being recognized as the destination for the wine tourist. Kelowna offers you miles of sandy beaches hugging the shores of Okanagan Lake, North America’s longest floating bridge & its home to dozens of wineries, ranging in size from cottage-style to large mansion-style. The entire day we spent exploring these wineries, one after the other. After we had enough of wine-tours & ... read more

Saying that Golden is one of the most perfect & beautiful locations in the world might sound like a grandiose statement, but it’s not so outrageous once you look at the facts…and look out the window. Opportunity knocks for everyone in Golden! Sitting at the convergence of the Columbia & Kicking Horse Rivers (famous for its White Water Rafting), Golden is the perfect getaway & four-season recreational paradise for travelers. Our first halt here was a cute little “Petting Farm”. It was a home to many breeds of goats, sheep, chickens, pigs, ducks – but not just any old kind, it was a collection of rare domestic breeds – some of these animals you may not have ever seen or heard of! So, sis & Dee went ahead feeding the chickens, giving hay to goats, bottle-feeding ... read more

Our western side road trip commenced in a huge vehicle called Dodge – Grand Caravan. With my BIL on the wheel & yours truly as the apt Navigator (fully equipped with maps, GPS etc), the rest of the team was sure of having a fantastic trip. The two of the largest national parks of Canada –Banff & Jasper National Parks, were eagerly waiting for our arrival. Elk, bison, moose, mountain goats & caribou must have established their own pathways in Jasper National Park long before humans arrived in the Canadian Rockies. Known as the gentle giant of the Rockies, Jasper - the shy cousin to bold, brassy Banff, was our first destination. “If you are really lucky, you will spot a Black Bear, and if you spot a Grizzly your life has been blessed” – a ... read more

After a wonderful trip of the east, we finally flew to my sister & brother-in-law’s home-base – Edmonton. Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta. Albertans like to claim that they have the best of everything the country has to offer. From the finest beef to the best national parks, the most beautiful towns to the oldest First Nation tribes, the largest malls to the prettiest lakes, Alberta has it all. Edmonton is a huge city, home to 1.1 million people and is the northernmost city in North America of at least one million people. Edmonton is famous for its beautiful river valley park system, the North Saskatchewan River Valley, which offers many kilometers of recreational trails, wildlife viewing, and city views. If the great outdoors is not your target, the city also offers West Edmonton ... read more

Niagara Falls is to Canada what Elvis is to Maryland. This torrential cluster of three falls welcomes thousands of tourists to witness its wonder. The thrill of being on the edge, the thrill of watching one-fifth of the world’s freshwater tumbling down uncontrollably, is mind boggling experience. I remember the childlike joy I felt when I first saw that enormous curtain of white. After hours of gaping at this roaring wonder, on the Maid of the Mist, at the Table Rock restaurant, in a dark room where Niagara’s fury is virtually simulated, in the galleys built behind the falls – even the mighty Niagara seemed tame. Next we wanted to explore the town of Niagara and we spent some time at going around the Niagara town & the Cliffton Hill, crammed with quirky museums and amusement ... read more

Our next destination – Quebec City – it seduces, from its impressive location above the St Lawrence River to its unblemished Old Town – Vieux Quebec – filled with 18th & 19th century houses. Fortress walls still encase the upper Old city and the soaring Chateau Frontenac dominates the landscape. This Quebec iconic hotel with castle-like turrets was our first halt. After taking a quick peek inside this majestic hotel, we spent our evening at Dufferin Terrace, with breathtaking views of the river & the lower town. Our stay here was at Quebec Youth Hostel which was situated in a historic building in the heart of Quebec City's old town. It had a nice homely feel about it, and we could prepare our own meals in their kitchen. Next morning we chose to explore Quebec city ... read more

As we hit the cruising broad Canadian Expressways, the metropolis of Quebec & the second largest French-speaking city in the world – Montreal, was our first destination. We arrived in Montreal with Montreal Olympic Tower – the tallest inclined tower in the world, greeting us on the road. After getting lost in the confusing ‘Ouest’ & ‘Est’ grid, finally we found our small B & B. Without wasting much time, we moved out in spite of the big clouds hovering over the city. Montreal’s downtown scene is a bustling study in contrasts. We witnessed the Victorian brownstone nuzzling skyscrapers, and the latest architectural marvels soaring beside stately neo-gothic churches. Lucky for us, but not so much for Deenaz & Reshma, International Bier (that’s how they spell it) Festival was on, and as we entered the venue, ... read more

Somehow I have never considered going to Canada on a holiday, don’t know why? Even though friends have raved about Toronto, Quebec or Montreal. Even though Vancouver has just been anointed world’s most liveable city. Even though the Canadian Rockies are supposed to be spectacular. I feel we should blame America, our brains are so hardwired by US of A, that Canada doesn’t come to mind when planning a holiday. So, I must confess I landed in Toronto’s Pearson International Airport with not much of enthusiasm. It was a bright summer morning, and my old classmate & friend Rinku was waiting for us at the Arrivals. It was an overwhelming feeling meeting an old classmate after 17 long years, and the towering presence of this ‘gentle giant’ reminded me of good old school days. The day ... read more

Visiting Canada all in one trip is a massive undertaking. Over 5000 Kms separate Toronto in east from Victoria in west (about the same distance separates London and Riyadh, or Tokyo and Calcutta). To drive from one end of the country could take 7-10 days or more (and that assumes you're not stopping to sight see on the way). A flight from Toronto to Vancouver takes over 4 hours. Everything about this country is big & even bigger. When speaking of specific destinations within Canada, it is better to consider its distinct regions. Atlantic Province is well known for unique accents, the origin of the Acadian culture, outstanding natural beauty (particularly around coastal... read more
