Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai January 23rd 2011

Chiang Mai is quite an awesome small city. Its got mountains and great food, western comforts, plenty of shopping and entertainment, and air asia flies there. All reasons that Chiang Mai is my choice for "where I would live if I picked up and moved to Thailand." I took a cooking class, matt took yoga, we visited the Doi Suthep temple, a muay thai fight, and night markets. The highlight was attending the We Be Jammin Thai Reggae Fest.... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Pai January 17th 2011

From Phi Phi, we flew Air Asia up to Chiang Mai. (Air Asia is an amazing low cost airline. Why the US airlines havent picked up on their success and recreated it is beyond me.) We then rode the 1st section of the Mae Hong Son loop to Pai, on the famed 762 curves, in the back of a tourist van. After spending a few days in Pai, we met up with friends we met at our hostel in Chengdu. Along with 3 other new travel buddies, we all headed out to Mae Hong Son on a few bikes and a pick up truck. After exploring life on the Burmese border, we vanned it back to Pai for a few final days before heading back down to Chiang Mai. The return van trip from Pai to ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don January 14th 2011

Koh Phi Phi really is Thai paradise. Its big on nature and small on culture though, since its so heavily trafficked by tourists. White sand, beautiful water, palm trees, karst, and sunshine. We spent 5 days here, enjoying the beaches, spent night of camping in Maya Bay, and ate massive amounts of fairly decent italian food. It was a good break from bolognese and club sandwiches for matt and a little break from stir-fried noodles for me.... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan January 1st 2011

Getting to our first Thai destination was an epic journey - a good way to start off traveling after 10 days of slacking on Mom's couch. San Francisco to Hong Kong. layover. Hong Kong to Bangkok. Immigration. Bangkok for 12 hours with no hotel or place to shake off the jetlag. Scarf down Subway sandwich on Khao San Road. Nine hour overnight bus ride to Chumporn. Four hour ferry ride from Chumporn to Koh Tao, and Koh Tao to Koh Phangan. Ride on the back of a pick up truck to beach resort. Room isnt ready for 3 hours. Sit and get really really hot. The whole thing took 48 hours from Alamo to hotel room with no shower, no bed, and like 7 airplane/bus/boat meals. This is whats all about, right? When we arrived on ... read more

Asia » Macau » Macau December 15th 2010

1 day in Macau to walk around and drink lychee martinis. 3 days in Zhuhai to eat irish canadian food, shop, and hot spring it up(in really silly hot spring uniforms) 2 days in Macau to play poker, and drink lychee martinis. again. --- Zhuhai was particularly difficult for Matt. We found 1 Canadian/Chinese pub, of course a wonderful healthful McDonalds (which was host to the only other English speakers in the whole city), and a random diner that served egg and ham sandwiches. It was not a culinary destination. It was most a destination of oddities and the ever present shopping.... read more

Asia » Hong Kong December 1st 2010

Rented an apartment in Sheung Wan for 2 weeks. It was about 200 square feet, but all brand new and convenient. We were lucky enough to have 3 friends come visit us here. Amy, Danielle, and Rick - thanks for being a part of our year! Hong Kong was also the place where we had to apply for our Chinese visa, which can be done at either the Chinese Embassy (really annoying to get to and difficult to deal with) or China Travel Services (a seemingly easy to deal with travel agency not too far from our apartment). As it turned out, CTS would take a lot more money to process a visa than it would at the embassy, but with 4 days to spare before our flight to Chengdu, we had no choice but to ... read more

Bandipur, a town stuck back in time, only accessible by extreme overcrowded 4x4. Bhaktapur, a town full of culture, puppies, and yogurt. We left from here on a red eye to Hong Kong. With some kind of stomach bug that lurked....... read more

Asia » Nepal » Pokhara November 10th 2010

After the trek, we went for some rest and relaxation in the warmer climates in Pokhara. We spent the first few days happy-hour-ing and hiking with our Canadian friends Brian and Christina before going to a yoga center outside of town for 3 days. Once we had enough of the 5:45am wake up call for meditation, we headed back to Pokhara to find some more happy hour deals and to hang out with our Dutch friends Rebecca and Teun.... read more
