aliceandpaul - Alice and Paul

Alice and Paul We have finally managed to fulfil one of our dreams, travelling around the world. We are leaving on 3rd of April and look forward to tell our friends and family everything about this adventure!! The first leg of our adventure will take us to Delhi in India, followed by Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. We are all too aware that this is an amazing opportunity for us to experience life in very diverse cultures not as holidaymakers but as true travellers for the first time. We intend to experience the journey to the full, to soak up the sights, sounds and smells and to try to make sense of them all for ourselves and hopefully for you too.

We are back. We feel a mixture of joy, sadness, disorientation and other feelings we haven't recognised yet! But we are trying to stay positive and keep alive all the things learnt, felt and lived. We know, we have been very lazy the last 2 months but we promise to upload the pictures of Argentina and Brazil as soon as possible. So the dream is over.....for now. Thank you for accompanying us for the last 8 months. Thanks expecially to those who wrote messages both publicly and privately through the blog. Looking forward now to see you for real. Brazil was the last leg of our trip, a great way to finish our travels, and the liveliest memory now sitting on the couch of our living room in a dull day in Cork. Brazil started with Giorgia and David (my sweet cousin and her husband) and their dogs Bohr (chega Bohr!!) and Runa, in Florianopolis, island Santa Catarina, where we stayed for 10 days enjoying their company, the marvellous island and.... waiting for the rain to stop! Unfortunately we arrived during heavy rain which just after we left brought huge disasters to the local communities and far too many dead. [View Full Entry]

Our long road south from Buenos Aires took us through some of the most beautiful scenery of Argentina. We visited the lake district an area of outstanding natural beauty and also peninsula Valdes an unspoiled nature reserve, home to sea elephants, penguins and the magnificent Southern Right Whales which we saw up close on a magical afternoon on the sea off Puerto Piramides. Our jurney then took us back west towards the mountains once again and the awesome glacier of Perito Moreno. It slides down from the Argentinian/Chilean icefields until it reaches Lago Argentino at only 180 metres above [View Full Entry]

In Buenos Aires we stayed with my cousin Maria, the daughter of my (Alice) dad's brother who emigrated here when he was very young. It was great to spend some time with her and her brother Enrique and see how they live and after their visits to Italy it was about time that somebody from the Italian part of the family came to Argentina. Paul and I had a fantastic time with them and they introduced us to some aspects of Argentinian life like asado (barbecue meat and lots of it!), tango... and dulce de leche (a kind of liquid toffee) [View Full Entry]

Our journey through Peru brought us to Lake Titicaca on the border with Bolivia. The lake lies at 3,800 m above sea level (12,500 ft.) and is approximately 160 km long and 70 km wide at its widest. It has been inhabited for many thousands of years and has seen important civilisations on both sides of the border and on the islands which lie on the Peruvian side of the lake. Our base was the city of Puno on the lakeshore. One of the pre-Inca civilisations near to Puno developed a very ceremonial and visible means of burying their important dead [View Full Entry]

Our visit to Peru was not in the plan but since we were in northern Chile we decided to head towards Peru and Bolivia before going to Argentina, this means our return is postponed by two months and we will be back in mid December...when will we have such an occasion again?! Our first stop in Peru was Arequipa, a beautiful colonial city, called the "White City" for the volcanic stone "sillar" with which the buildings are built. The city is in a valley dominated by the volcano "El Misti", 5822 m. In another volcano near the city, Ampato, was found [View Full Entry]

The bus to San Pedro de Atacama brings you through kilometre after kilometre of desert but this is no featureless landscape of sand dunes rather an everchanging vista of of mountains, salt flats, plains filled with rocks and boulders and in the distance the brown silent mountains stand watch. There is almost no vegetation apart from some small scrubby plants, perhaps some cactus exactly as you would see in a John Wayne film and occasionally where there is an oasis, some trees as is the case in San Pedro de Atacama. This oasis is not as you imagine a palm tree [View Full Entry]

Having relaxed for so long in New Zealand we began to feel a new sensation in those last wet and windy days in Auckland... we wanted to hit the road again so badly! We were happy on the journey to the airport although sad to leave our friends Brad and Doro and baby Theo behind. We arrived in Santiago refreshed and ready only to be immediately disappointed by the cloudy overcast weather and the rain as we took our bus into the city. We really wanted this winter to be over! We left Auckland at 17.20 on Monday 11th August and [View Full Entry]

Our journey through the South Island was wetter and colder than expected, but once again we were lucky and managed to have some sunny days when we planned to do some outdoor activities. Pretty much soon after landing we headed to the Abel Tasman National Park, on the north of the SI. It's quite a small park but very popular because of its natural beauty and accessibility. We did a 2 day hike on the coastal path which included one night in a hut with no electricity and water, and it turned to be no gas either, so bloody freezing! We [View Full Entry]

Winter in Queensland in Australia is like a good summer in Ireland but arriving in Auckland felt exactly like being at home that is to say, cold, windy and wet. New Zealand was in the grip of an icy spell of weather and elsewhere in the country lots of snow was being dumped on the mountains. We went straight to the nearest outdoor clothing store and bought some very warm jackets. Next we picked up our campervan which turned out to be a lot larger than either or Alice or I had dreamed it would be and following a detailed briefing [View Full Entry]
