March 27th 2012 9:32 pm Today, we worked at the worksite till 12: 30, and by then all of us enjoyed a triumphant as we saw the finish line of the endless walls. After a small portion, protein filled lunch that was well organized by Tanya, we visited the Mayan Ruins. We were all surprised to see it most of the structures intact, and Antolin explained to us everything about the sacred Mayan Relgion. We enjoyed many sites and also experienced a spritiual ceremony. The evening progressed and we had a chicken dinnner that was cooked in a special Mayan recipe. At 7 30, the Saint George's group came to our Somos house, and the whole group enjoyed 2 birthday cakes for Justin and Carlos, that was provided by Chris and Kristi. After the delicious desserts, ... read more

Today we were supposed to have a full work day. That did not work out because at about twelve or twelve thirty the rain started to come down. This was not Vancouver rain where it drizzles a little bit on and off; this was Guatemalan rain. I could run outside for fifteen seconds and be completely drenched. In twenty minutes of pouring rain the worksight got too flooded to work. We had to call it a day and go home. Before lunch we got some good work done though, and it was soooo hot. Everyone had to take a short breaks to keep from getting sun stroke nd to put on more sun screan. I was so happy when a tiny cloud would block the sun for like two minutes. As you can tell this is ... read more

We have officially survived the first week of our expedition. After a long and hard working week at the land of Project Somos it was time for some well deserved R & R. With nowhere but up to go we set out. In our minds there was nothing but a serene landscape of turqoise waters and whit sandy beaches. Little did we know Mr. Paranoid aka Nick C, had already google map (street view) the nuclear active and algae infested waters. We still had our hopes up for the "resort" which had been promised to hold fluffy white towels and none other than the Westin Heavenly Beds (aka sleeping on a cloud). The bus rattled down the narrow cobble-stone road into our so called oasis. Still open-minded at this point, we pulled set eyes on colorful, ... read more

Friday, March 23rd, 2012 Today was the end of a long tiring week, to say the least. After working countless hours in the blazing heat, we are looking forward to our short getaway to the popular Lake Atilan. However, before taking off we enjoyed a fun filled day at Project Somos with many children from Tecpan. The day started off with our regular wake up of 6:30, getting to the worksite around 8:30. After 4 hours of tiring work in the Guatemalan sun, it was finally lunch. We enjoyed a healthy meal option of sandwiches and pita wraps. Lunch time is quite awkward with the Saint Georges boys, which most of them are quite new around girls, classic George, sick wheels Jin. After lunch we kicked off the community Project Somos Day. We led the children ... read more

After an exciting night of "One Card", it was tough to wake up at 6:30, especially after a long day of work. When we got to the work site this morning, we were proud to see the walls we had built yesterday; it was hard to believe that there was nothing there 48 hours ago. Although our morning was grueling and exhausting, we were rewarded with some delicious pasta that Ashley and Brayden........ and Lauren made for us. Because a truck was on the soccer field, we were unable to play the workers but we enjoyed ourselves in the shade, relaxing. The afternoon was tough and tiring but we managed to make it through. By the time we got back to the Somos House, everyone was exhausted. After quick showers, most of us crawled into our ... read more

Today was our first full work day on the Project Somos Site. We began the day with a 6:30am wake up call, and by 8:00am, we were heading into the mountains to the children's village. Because it was our first full work day, and not a half-day like yesterday, it felt a lot longer; which really makes you appreciate the long hours that the regular workers put in every day. Something that we had not anticipated were the weather conditions that the afternoon brought. It was very foggy during some parts of the day, and it also rained for a couple of hours. In a country where weather like this only comes once every five months, it can only be concluded that the Canadians have brought the cold temperatures with them. However, despite the uncomfortable conditions, ... read more

first day on the job it was extemely hot! there is 12000 AB stones which we will have to build retaining walls. on our first day we built up 7 sections of this giant wall in 4 hours. we played soccer with the Somos workers for a half hour and oh my goodness they were amazing. the score was only 3-2 for them. on our way to the job site and back there was a bus ride that we had to take which lasted around 15-20 minutes each way. lets just say that it should have been a one way road, because the road was so narrow that it was sketchy. trucks and semis were passing on the outside of us doing the speed of sound and coming inches from the cliff side. at the end ... read more

9:05PM, and day one is almost complete, everyone still alive. Everyone speaking in a beautiful British accent we are. This morning we woke up after a long day of travel, and sleeping overnight in a Hostel, we woke up at 7:00am. We had breakfast at the hostel, and got our bags packed and packed a day bag to go tour Antigua for the morning. We walked around the city, almost getting hit by cars multiple times because the cars have the right away here, not pedestrians. We walked through the markets and experienced the Guatemalan culture. We saw many cool things, and went into a few churches. We walked into one of the most amazing mcdonalds I have seen, and thats not sarcastic, it was huge and decorated with trees and bushes everywhere. It was amazing. ... read more
