Day 5 Kaunas to Vilnius 86 miles

Over ate last night as there is a not so subtle distinction between an appetiser and a starter. The appetiser seemed to be for foursix people..still it all tasted nice This was supposed to be the easiest day definately shorter but the hills just keep on coming...the big hill went on for three miles and I got the gearing perfect because I caught up with the other three at the top. My knee is ju

Day 4 Silute to Kaunas 114 miles

The day started nice and bright and I was optimistic about the journey as we were turning out of the wind. Unfortunately the wind had a different idea and my favourite flat nice road was a real slog plus the end hill was a killer. My left knee was now really swollen and I was getting twinges in all joints now...lost feeling in fingers too. Nick had to bail because his knees had given up and I kn

Day 3 Plateliai to Silute 102 miles

The morning was bright and sunny and we had our obligatory photo on the pier. We headed out of Plateliai onto a long uphill climb to the A11 but at least it was warm and the scenery was stunning. Turning towards the coast and we met the Baltic breeze which slowed us down by 20 luckily the Ibuprofen was working but my leg was starting swell and the left ankle started 39twingeing39. We recog

Day 2 Panevezys to Plateliai est. 110 miles

Awoke very tired and worried about how my knee would hold out. The sun was out and even though the biting wind was still present and the temperature was not as warm as we would have liked we all felt our spirits rise. We didn39t go through Radviliskis as we did last year and the route was much more interesting. We met up with Rugute and the captains at Silale but not before Vitas decided that t

Day 1 Vilnius to Panavezys 102 miles actual 110 miles

Plan was for all riders to congregate at Green Hall Barclays building at 9am as many others would be joining us for about 3 miles out of Vilnius. It was great to see Edita Andreas and their little toddler Sharunas I will tidy up spelling later. The start of the journey was a nice gentle run up a long hill as many of the riders were not used to a fast pace. We left them at the top of the hil

Arrived in Vilnius

Everything went very smoothly as it was a carbon copy of last year. The weather was really hot and we were expecting rain as per the forecast. Setting up the bikes was a breeze and the Novotel staff were great. Went for a quick trip up town with Nick and John and the heavens opened. Felt tired and glad that I didn39t have to ride my bike that day...not sure how we did that last year I39v

Last team training day before we head off to Lithuania was a great day considering the forecast was storms and heavy rain. We got to Leintwardine to stop for a pint and joined the St. George celebrations though unfortunately we couldn39t stay to watch George slaying the dragon....great Venison burger We narrowly avoided starting a stampede of cattle and faced many obstacles such as 580 metre

Leaving Vilnius Day 8

We got up very early around 330am and I went and finished packing down in reception. I completed some of my travel blog on the computer while I was awaiting Nick and John. The taxi was far too small and we had to cram the bikes in John was less than happy. More adventures at the airport when John had his hand luggage searched Nick left his plastic bag with 39water products39 in his han

It39s the last day and we all had a sleep in as we weren39t expected until 11am at Green Hall to pick up the bikes which was nice as the last few days had left their marks on different parts of my body those dratted Mosquitoes didn39t help. We decided to walk and took advantage of the fleeting sun as we wound our way down one of the main streets. At least a dozen Lithuanian riders m

Kaunas to Vilnius Day 6

Got up early and headed out in a cold and overcast day that had seen rain and promised some more. We knew this would be hilly so we started at a leisurely pace of around 14mph with a drink stop every 3045mins. The road improved and we started to get into our groove. The road climbed as predicted and we where all amazed at how much easier we were able to tackle the tough bits. We met up with Vitas

Taurage to Kaunas Day 5

Slept well though sore elbow limited movement. Our three beds were a little too close for complete comfort and John lost the snoring competition. We watched the Salmon trying to jump this massive Weir while we had breakfast and then embarked on an 85miler. I ws looking forward to see Kalingrad and a checkpoint so we had a few deviations. The road alongside the river was brilliant but unfortunately

Plateliai to Taurage Day 4

Had a reasonably good sleep though snoring wars between myself and Nick are still not fully resolved. John joined the fray but was pitiful and he slept soundly albeit a bit of footsie was fun. My sunburn kicked in just great...deep red down my left or right side of my leg. The journey to Taurage was quite eventful as we left the lake after a photoshoot on the jetty. The roads were hilly then start

Dumped our bikes into the back of the van up to the Hill of Crosses in the morning and took lots of pictures of the crosses definately an eye opener. The journey started really well with a gentle incline that I lead on just a bit too fast exuberance it was a gorgeous day then John got a puncture The roads were pretty good but a theme emerged little flat bit followed by a long straight i

I39ve just had a wonderful time at a meeting of some Rugute families this evening. Most especially some of the children playing Lithuanian instruments and some pictures they painted for us. My contribution following the chicken soup and some cakes was to organise the football and then finally be on the winning side of the Basketball. We all had a great evening though I was smarting from the 94

Needed the sunblock as it was a scorcher my knees are still red. Stopped off in Radviliskis to meet a brave young girl along the way. She had drawn some pictures of us on bikes and had a little porcelain gift for each of us plus the mother had brought some hand made cheese. We had a few piccies and then headed off to Siauliai sounds like Showlay well it does to me. Needed the escort for a lo

Had a great journey getting to Panavezys. Much easier going and the weather is great need to get some sunblock. Large open country with lots of Storks and gentle rolling hills. If you are staying in Ukmerge then I would recommend the Big Stone great service and lovely food. We are eating in Katpedele and have just had some pizzas yummy Off to Siauliai now.

Very early start 230am Everything went relatively smoothly at airports though there was a definite OMG moment when the luggage conveyor stopped and we were the only ones waiting for our gear...10 minutes later and we were sorted. Two straps broken and a small hole in my bike bag. Had a great welcome from over 20 people outside the Barclays building Green Hall and managed to get all the bikes se

Just completed our penultimate planning call with Dakanis and Vitas from Lithuania. Getting excited now...I39ve already printed off my boarding pass and just received another donation..yippee Looks like it will be an early start on Sunday morning 3am with a hectic flight followed by a hasty rebuild of our bikes and then 50 miles to Ukmerge. Easy. Not sure about the prospective lack of hot

I did this 29 miler on my old mountain bike and found it really hard...hence the red face. I learnt the importance of good bike equipment such as padded gloves

OK. Not inspiring perhaps or even original but it is a start. Bike sort of packed....need some ties to secure the seat and stuff. The cycle bag is quite heavy but has room for some clothes.
