MISSING YOU!! - From: Here's to you......
Hi Amy, it was a real pleasure to read your [hiccup] final blog and what a great friend. I did come close to shedding tears and feel that there is a big hole here in your absence! Your cameraderie is sincerely missed by Maria and me and we're working hard to keep up the tradition of a few laughs, especially at lunchtime!! I know that the kids are missing out on your talents and it's fitting that I write today on what I think is your very first day on the new job [lucky students], and the first day of SPRING in Aust!! All the best at your new school, and with Roel's study. Very good to read that Carli and Craig have such wonderful digs and that your furniture made it up there, stay tuned Carli for a phone call if I ever make it to BJ, must be a fascinating time. Well, move on 2010 Expo so the dust can settle, Amy the building of that flyover now has surpassed all imaginings, and we continue to clunk clunk our way through. Thanks again for leaving everything in such great shape for me, an esteemed mantle to take-over and as we say in Oz it'll be head down and bum up for most of the year. All best and love to you and yours, miss you! Margx

Good luck in "Reality" land! - From: Here's to you......
We've loved reading your blog- you could write a travel book yourself from it. We're settled into Minsk and enjoying both the city and the school. Minsk is one of the most beautiful cities we've been in. The air is clean and the cities is full of green parks and gardens and flowers and fruit trees are everywhere. Best of luck in "reality" land!

People make the experience. - From: Here's to you......
Great summation of a life-changing experience. But, although you two saw some amazing places, it's all about the people you meet along the path and the ones at home who love you and are awaiting your return. I feel lucky to have been able to both share that Asian pathway and to feel excited when you came home. :)

Legacy Impossible II - From: Here's to you......
Hey guys, Wow, the end of an era! I almost feel like a piece of me is missing now. I had always enjoyed checking your blog from my desk in DC when all of my little brats were taking a test or something and giving myself a little mini holiday. It's hard to believe that the roles are reversed now. You mentioned Carly and I taking up the blog torch; well, unfortunately, I believe our blog would be doomed to failure and disappointment. Take the film "Speed," for instance. It had everyone on the edge their seats, eagerly anticipating the next scene. Granted, Keanu kind of gets on one's nerves a bit but Sandra Bullock plays her part well, the plot is tight and the cinematography is well-executed. But have you ever seen "Speed II"? Did you even know that there was a "Speed II"? Exactly. You guys were the blockbuster, we're just a boring old sequel. With that said, we do have another round of pictures about ready to send off. Even thorough they weren't framed by a semi-professional and they're not accompanied by international bestseller worthy prose, they'll have to suffice. There is simply no replacing or attempting to keep up with the original China trail-blazers, Amy and Roel. Thanks for all of the effort that you put into the blog, guys. It was thoroughly enjoyed and will be sincerely missed.

Man, just when I thought that I had it made in Beijing, you guys go ahead and post these fantastic pics! Thanks for making me homesick. :) In all seriousness, I do want to thank you for keeping up this blog. It was a great way to keep tabs on your adventures and I came to look forward to receiving the notice in my email inbox. I'm not sure if I'll keep up the practice myself... I can only imagine how much work went into this... But I will try to keep family and friends in the loop, just like you and Dad did. One last comment... Come and visit us here in Beijing! I know you miss the food (especially the prices of the food!) and the patios... Come! Love you both! Car

Zai Jian - xiang nimen - miss you! - From: Zai Jian Shanghai, part deux
Hi Amy, it's Marg / Margaret here . . . have so enjoyed your blogs and these last 2 I read a while back and response has been delayed. Back home feels like living in 2 hemispheres, literally, as one browse through the inbox takes me back to so many good times - and many shared with you on a daily basis at work, along with a lot of laughs. The year would not have been so much fun without your collegiate spirit, fantastic professional advice and our little escapes from that real world through our Chinese classes, wines and cheeses, occasional dinners - and yes, that 1 trip to 'celestial dollars' - when we had to ride back to school in a major rush in a very small bicycle taxi!! Hope you get to read The Mao Case as some funny and reminiscent bits about Shanghai and M partic towards the end. Hope Carli and Craig settling in well to Beijing, and you and Roel in your Canadian home. Hope your hols have not yet ended too! And that this reaches you. love M.

Major memories - From: Zai Jian Shanghai...part 1
Amy and Rouel, Your memories of Shanghai are beautifully recorded . What an amazing transformation has taken place. ' My sweet memories of being there in 1984 recall a very different scene. I was with a group of US and Canadians. We were looking at international approaches to gifted education. We had to travel with guides. In Shanghai, one evening, I left my hotel alone(and without permission) to explore the quiet, bike- lined streets. Families were gathered outside their buildings along the way enjoying the evening air. I went along a quiet, dimly lit avenue lined on either side with rows and rows of parked bicycles to a department store. I navigated my way to the 5th floor where musical instruments were displayed. I seemed to be the only customer. A very polite gentleman helped me find the one -stringed violin I wanted. (I had heard it played so expertly along the way during the trip). From there I went on along the avenue to a small independent jewellery and antique store. There I found an exquisite pair of antique jade earrings which the proprieter was so happy to sell me. I returned to my hotel on foot. No one had noticed I was gone.

Life on the edge... - From: Is it Ho Chi Minh? Or Saigon?
Dear Yvonne, What an encouraging, thoughtful and thought-provoking comment! As our two years in Shanghai draws rapidly to its close, let's just hope we don't soon forget about our journey and its adventure. We're so glad that you've received inspiration from our accounts, and you in turn have inspired us!Speaking of learning...this year (thanks to teaching "Theory of Knowledge") we've been introduced to the book "Sophie's World" in which the author, Jostein Gaarder, makes the point that we should always, always live our lives in wonder...on the edge of the rabbit's fur, as he puts it, and not burrowed down on the skin. So here's to life on the edge! We wish you well with your journey of recovery, and thanks a million for your inspiring comment!! Amy & Roel PS...we are going to have our blog turned into a book...when we get back we'll get in touch!

You are inspirational - From: Is it Ho Chi Minh? Or Saigon?
It has been wonderful reading from time to time your blogs that reinforce for me especially that life isn't about the destination. It is about the journey . You have journeyed so well, heartfully sharing with many friends and volleagues via your blogs your windows on the world from the beginning of your great trek. That joy of discovery keeps one young and full of wonder. Thank you for sharing your stories. So many of us talk about what we could/should do. You model the doing and reflecting. What a great way to learn. Thank you for including me on your list. During the time before I progressed from crutches to a wheel chair, and was confined in a bed for months, your journey gave my imagination legs. Are you tempted to convert your inspiring prose into a book? I'd buy a copy for my daughter who has an adventurous heart.

Hey Care, Thanks for the great response! We really appreciate knowing when someone is reading the blog:-) Soon we'll be home and reviewing it in book form...and it'll be all the typos that will come back to haunt us! Speaking of ghosts--Vietnam's past is very much alive, which Roel as a history buff, particularly appreciates. Not sure how he made it through the Co Chi tunnels...apart from the narrow confines they're hot as hades! Yes, the will of the Vietnamese is commendable. As you saw for yourself last year in Hanoi and environs...see you soon!Luv, A&R

Saigon looks almost as good as Hanoi:) - From: Is it Ho Chi Minh? Or Saigon?
It must have been amazing to stay in that historic hotel. Did you see Graham Green ghosting about? I'm going to assume that those large 'copas de vino blanco' were probably something light and French, not snake wine, hey? .....Seeing photos of those tunnels and entrances gives new meaning to the determination of the Vietnamese people. One has to admire their courage and cleverness. I can't believe Roel squooshed himself into that space. Wasn't he a tiny bit concerned about getting stuck. I'm sure that the engineers and builders never imagined a day when tourists would try to do that. I have to say that I too am too claustrophobic to give that a go. Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed this blog. Although I must admit that I'm glad that I got to enjoy Vietnam before the heat, as you guys look like you were melting. Love, Carrie:)

This is, what I think, most people imagine China to be. I know that Shanghai is a great place to live and to work but it must be wonderful to see this side of the country. I remembered the people on our boat tour wanting us to be in their pictures. The way they did it was really quite flattering. So, I particularly enjoyed the photo of you guys in that really cute cafe with the locals snapping your picture. You should print that one. This might make it easier to come to your 'real' home. - From: Ching Ming in Chong Ming
I remember in the months just before I left Mexico, everything seemed to go wrong, as in difficult to do or arrange anything. In my mind this somehow made it easier for me to leave what had, in essence become my home as well. So, maybe that's what's happening now as in this little excursion that seems from your blog to have been somewhat disappointing.....photos are good, though, especially the deer, the horse, and you guys on the boats.

I love the pic of the horse in the mist -very cool. Did you see a Centaur? This reminds me of my adventure to Pongu Islands. It was the off season and I took a boat to the wrong island -the industrial island. There was a military base and a huge heap of China's garbage burning all day and all night. Those were fun times! I literally stayed the night and got on the first ferry back to the main land... Here's a link to an interesting article I found about China's emerging "ecovillages" (something that Im very interested in!) -hope you enjoy. http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/chinas-first-ecovillage-proves-a-hard-sell/2006/08/25/1156012740582.html?page=fullpage# Love u guys! Hey Carrie, I've blanked on the noodles on the train...I definitely am not a fan of the noodle breakfast. And I can only remember our first sip of that incredible coffee with the scenes of the jungle from our window. Like I said, I think we went back for the coffee! This time we only got a 'taste' of Vietnam, but from what we saw the flowers in South Vietnam had the ones in the north beat. Without your slave driving ways, Craig and I have no reason to try make it through the day. So, on Saturday I took a 4 hour nap, we stayed up until 3am that night, and woke up at 3pm the next day. Reverse (unprintable). It's all worth it though - Craig and I had a fantastic time! Maybe it's in the cards to do it again. Love Car

holiday envy - From: Xin Nian Kuai Le
Hi Amy & Roel- Just finished reading your latest entry, and it's official, I want to go to China! Looks like you had a fantastic time- I'm especially intrigued by this secret-password-type bar. Our holiday here was great- filled with stuff, but also lots of down time. I too go back to reality/work tomorrow, but I'm working extra hard not to let it get me down. Hope your return goes well, and I'll look forward to more news and pictures later. Happy New Year! Love Johanna

Also I think you, Carly and Craig have introduced a whole new Xmas tradition with your gift of Italian Pannocote -- delicious!! Happy New Year! - From: Carly and Craig arrive from Chigago for Christmas 2008....
Wow! Love it. It was great to see your latest blog and talk to you all on skype -very cool. It looks like you both had an adventure getting there but I'm glad you did -here we kept seeing spots on the CBC of people waiting like 6-7 days?!! I mean at that point (or way before) why not just go home? Maybe they're connecting or something? Anyhoo glad you made it! Did the captain actually come on and say that he needed to jettison fuel and that he’d never done anything like this before?!!! LOL. Did he then manoeuvre the plan upside-down to deploy? Picturing this is really fun for me. Sorry. Buckle up I guess. I'm not going to lie-I had to look up that word! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_dumping Well you ‘fantastic 4’ over there --I’m wishing you a warm and safe new year and that all of your wildest dreams will come true! Safe flight back Carly and Craig. Got your message about your friend coming and would love to entertain etc. Where do you think I should take them? Love, Chalo

Hey Chalo and Chris, Thanks for dropping by!! And, yes, you got it!! That's exactly how one puts themself in a situation -- which as your mom pointed out -- is not a good place to be in Shanghai. Tucking and rolling down the streets now is even more challenging...let alone going to work, shopping for prezzies, etc. But the bright side is I'll have a great excuse this Xmas for putting my feet up! Looking forward to talking to you on the big day...and the grinch says hi :-) Love, Amy

I mean I've stubbed my toe but this looks sooooo painful. Chris P came and looked over my shoulder and yeild out in horror! He felt really bad that this happened to you. Me too of course. We loved Carly's WTF comment though! LOL. I'm glad your on the mend and that you'll be surrounded by family love. I'm sure we'll talk xmas eve or day. Say hi to the Grinch! Love, Chalo and Chris P

The other bones look gooood. - From: Starbucks Xmas blend is out so deck them halls...
You have had yourself quite the fall. Mosquitoes, flu bugs and now the mischeivious toe fairy does you in. Kudoes (spelling?) for getting around Shanghai. I found it challenging dodging the traffic with all my bones intact. Anyway soon you can put the 'little piggy' up and relax and drink with Carly and Craig. My only 'mishap' is that the other night whilst dinner was baking away, the oven 'blew up'. So I'm going to have to be a little creative as far as managing Christmas without an oven. Oh well, Toronto is full of amazing patisseries. Just like Joanna I sent your parcel to D.C. on November 24 with Canada Post. Fool that I am! It still hasn't arrived. So, take care of all your extremities. Love, Carrie:)

You're still learning to love Shanghai. - From: Waiting for the yin's return...
I must admit I did get a kick out of the amusing signs around Shanghai while I was there, so I really enjoy this blog's photos. The mosquitoes in Cancun (do you remember) were also tiny, black stealth bombers that even really good window screens didn't deter. So, yeah, just hold on to that thought that you can catch up on your sleep back here in T.O. Maybe you should ask Santa (i.e. Carly & Craig) to bring you one of those nets for the bed.

Après la pluie, le soleil - From: Waiting for the yin's return...
Dear friends and courageous travellers, We have a saying in French that sunshine often comes after rain. Your Yin will come again. Your blogs have been so interesting. Will they translate into a book at the end of your journey abroad. Helen Keller once said that "Life is an exciting adventure , or nothing at all." You are so very truly LIVING your life. I believe your YIN will return quicker if you believe it will return. That is what I hold onto. Every morning I think about what good things I am grateful for. the YANG will pass. I had a biking accident on July 20, 2008 that had quite an impact. I had multiple fractures - spiral break - and now have titanium plates inthe tibia, fibula with sixteen vertical pins holding bones and ankle bones together in the right leg. I'm learning patience in the healing process and have discovered how thankful one should be just to have a body that does what it was born to do. Think of how lucky you are to be mobile in a foreign country. May you journey on safely. I look forward to your next blog. Yvonne Dufault

I look back at the pictures and it makes me smile that we get to spend time together. So really everyone is somewhere else in the world -at least it seems that way! I just finished reading Rob's blog or brog as he calls it and I have to say it's very amazing to know such cool people off in the world -its late for you as I write this (close to 2am maybe 3) but I cant wait to see if my comment gets approval and to read your next blog. Thanks to my mom I was able to to do this! Work for myself that is for things I believe in. Hey Car, Great to hear from you...but we've been sore and tired all week because Beijing is quite the haul!! We walked for four days and literally climbed the Great Wall...because despite the cable car that's what you do! Thank goodness we didn't have to climb the 1,000 steps to get up to it (and apparently that's the right number!!) So coming after Vietnam you and I would have been toast! But you're right about being freaked about the taxi...and having one at the gate WAS a good omen. The great thing about being here is that you understood all my nuances. Now that the world expo in 2010 is on the Shanghai doorstep, there's talk of cleaning up their act here, too...spitting, dirt, bikes on sidewalks, etc. Should be interesting...as always! See you soon... Love, Amie PS...and no, I didn't practice my French...c'est tres difficile. But we LOVED hearing it everywhere...and drinking in the atmosphere (along with the wine :-)

Did it come back to you? ....Your taxi story reminded me of my departure day and we left at a very decent hour and yet we were a little worried about getting a taxi at your gate. So, you must have been really freaked, but it sounds like finding the taxi waiting there was an omen of really good things to come. Love, Carrie.

Truer words were never spoken... - From: Killing us softly...
Hey Car, Thanks for the reminder of our flawlessly perfect Vietnam trip, and yes you're right...we had an awful lot of luck on our side. And then there was Nanjing...and now there is Beijing, and we're having a blast! (Look for the details in the next blog:-) You would love the hutongs...tell Pauline, as I will too, that they're everything she promised. Very much Hanoi, with a more upscale Xin Tian De tone (if you can picture that..) And buddies you do need, and it's too bad you weren't with us on the great wall, because you and I could have screamed our way around it, with Roel bounding off to all corners...and I missed Christopher last night with our Peking Duck Feast. No skimpy Toronto portions over here...we had duck coming out of our ears. I'm still recupperating. Can hardly wait to see you all...won't be long now. Get the steak ready for the barbie, Love you, Amy

- From: Killing us softly...
After reading 'Amy and Roel's excellent adventure, I am reminded of the chaos in the stations when all those poor people were trying to get home for their New Years, versus the empty station in Hanoi and our virtually private rail car. Travel is so much serentipity, that is luck, timing and being favoured by the travel gods. So let's hope you have all that when you weekend in Bejing. Great blog. I must say that I admire your determination in getting to Nanjing. Having said that I'm glad that I didn't venture out on my own, one needs a travel buddy or two or three when traveling in Asia.

Hey Car, Yes, you're right! I can see your dad's pic towering over People's Square, pushing the latest bag or watch...except it may give him a fat head, so we'd better stick to what we know....slogging it out in the trenches! Speaking of which, your slog must be coming to an end. Can't wait for that...as I bet you can't either. See you on Skype this weekend! Love you, Mom

Starbucks...the story - From: Killing us softly...
Hey Car, What a great idea! I think that you're right...maybe the major reason I love Shanghai is not its amazing history, architecture, and sites...but the Starbucks on every corner. We'll mull that over while we have lunch today, in...Starbucks! And your right...Nanjing was great, but come to think of it. Starbucks-free!! Guess we can't go back there too soon after all...can't wait to see you again. Love, Mom

Hey aimsey and roelie, glad all is well, last wkend was easter and Carrie and I had a very lonely guy kind of time. Everyone was down in d.c. having what i hear was a blast. Still have mounds of snow to melt and last night was still -10? But as you, sounds like we will be turning a corner soon. Now I dont want you two to be jealous, especially Roel, but tomorrow...wait for it....wait for it... Im going to help mom pack, ooohhhh nothing says good times like spending sunday afternoon doing that! Try to give some people a gift! Okay, okay..we'll book the park for when you come, and the moment you step off the plane we're there! It sounds like you could actually use some urgent time in the water balls! After that I have another place in mind, but it involves dark rooms with mind-altering prescriptions...ha ha. Actually, that sounds good...a few more days (or moments) in Shanghai and I just may join you! Hope to see you here sooner than later, in water balls or no. But we could always just sip a drink or two in Xin Tian De...much more tranquil, and just as therapeutic. Ask Chris or Carrie if you don't believe me. Thanks for dropping by the blog...looking forward to Skypage soon. Love, Me...

Hey Car(ly)! Nice to hear from you...my long lost daughter in DC. That is you, right? Ha ha...yes, Carrie has landed, and left the building...but our 'elitist' lifestyle has it ups and downs...just ask Carrie about her harrowing walks through the streets, dodging the bikes, scooters and cars -- and that's on the sidewalks! NYC on steroids?! Maybe she was just so happy to be out of this land of craziness...but then, you'll see for yourself WHEN you get here. In the meantime, drop on by (online that is...) Hey Car, I'm glad you like the blog...and I enjoy looking at the pics, too. Your antique camera did do really well, no? Save us the pics from your last roll, along with the Shanghai murder mystery book...I'm looking forward to them. After reading the blog, a colleague was concerned about my sadness after you left, but as you know, life in Shanghai is always very jampacked, so I assured her that I'm managing in our empty quiet apartment...but I do miss our dins at the "Kommune" trips to Xin Tian De, "Top" Supermarket...and just general all-round chillin' in Shanghai. I love your "New York on steroids" analogy...as did Marina, who got a big laugh out of it. I'm glad you've got Chris to reminisce with, and I'll definitely try to get that documentary, "Up the Yangtze". Looking forward to seeing you fairly soon, and reminiscing together! Love, Amy

Oh, what a time we had! - From: Zai Jian Carrie...
It seems rather surreal that as I'm here getting over my jet lag (i.e. still waking up at 2:00 a.m.) that I'm enjoying the wonderful memories of my visit to Asia. Good choice of photos Ame, especially the ones from my 'antique' camera, ha,ha. Love seeing our Sunday brunch. That was well worth every Yuan. Now, brunch at my favorite spot i.e. 'Bonjour Brioche' will pale in comparison. Speaking of comparisons, coming in on the 427 on Wednesday afternoon, Toronto seemed somehow small and provincial after the towers and glitz of Shanghai. I've said to a couple of people, "It's like New York on steroids." It is very odd that a lot of my favorite moments were on the water. It is also strange that I'm not there supping with you at the 'Kommune'. It was fun to reminisce with Chris about Xiantindi. He's the only one here who gets it. Anyway, thanks Amy and Roel. I'm still savouring each moment and the blog certainly helps. Love, Carrie.

Dear Chalo, Well you'd better warn Martha not to stand near the edge of any pier...Ted Danson!? The Village People!? You should be writing a blog, and making all that money you said was there for me (by the way, i'm still waiting for those offers!!) To answer your questions that I know your mom has not addressed, she and I received a lowly 77 for our efforts at Karoke, and the round window is at one of my favorite restaurants on the Bund called "New Heights"...not if, by when you come, we'll all go! And if we're the friendly giants, then Vietnamese are the Whos of Whoville, or at least that's what we thought seeing four of them at a time in the pedicabs! As for Roel and I, I'm glad you enjoyed the sight of us in one! I wonder what all the Whos thought? :-) Keep those comments, you have a great, quirky view of the world...why you don't pick up a pen, but then can you fit that into your busy shedule? Ha ha. Dear Martha, Yes, you're right! We're busted...it's a wonder we didn't all run into each other in Florida :-) But we all agree that next to Epcot, Vietnam is where you have to go to experience the real Asia. Shanghai is now a huge modern busy city, so the visit to Vietnam was definitely surreal. How did you like your cruise? Envying you that sun... - From: Vietnam Ho....
Dear Lauren, I'm sure your cruise was amazing...the three of us here all cruised on Halong Bay and loved it! And we wished for some sun the whole time! How did the gambling go? Did you lose your $20.00 Carrie gave you? And you're right...it was incredible that we all met up in the lobby of the Namhai and the history is really something. Since you're a history buff too, according to Carrie, you should definitely put Vietnam on your list. Thanks for the great comment...we all can't wait for the summer and seeing you again. By then you'll have one year at Glendon under your belt...love you, Carrie, Amy and Roel

Great blog! - From: Vietnam Ho....
Well, first of let me say what a treat this is to wake up on a grey Sunday morning of rain and snow to see such explicit accounts of your wonderful adventures. Today I woke up from what seemed to be a dream that turned into a nightmare where Martha, Lauren, Ted Danson and myself were hanging out by a pier at a tropical location when Martha decided to look over the edge and fell over. Ok. Not sure what that was all about? I must say the picture of my mom with the snowman is too cute! Who built that? It was so nice to see Craig Sr. together with everyone and what looked like a serious karaoke session. What was your score in the end? One of the places you visited had a really nice big round window, which I just have to profess my love for. Roel looks as though he is floating in the clouds after having just received eternal happiness. I guess I would too. Very cool picture. The history of the places you visited must have been overwhelming at points. I guess I should make it out there sooner rather than later. My mom and Amy seem really happy to see each other! A bit different than the Starbucks at the top of the street, eh? Your ‘beach’ pictures do look cold, but I find when I’m on a cold beach alone it can be some of the most quiet moments in life…just the wind and birds and echoes of your mind…lol Who are those nice little people my mom made friends with (Tea at the Village)? They must have thought who are these friendly giants. That’s nice. I love that picture of Roel and Craig with the Captain…all Roel needs is a Police Uniform and Craig in “Native” attire and they’ve got a pretty great band going! I think there could be money there? And lastly, I agree -I don’t know how the hell all 4 of you would fit in those bike boxes! Too funny! I think the picture of Amy and Roel in their little box being driven around town is just priceless! It is fantastic. Well back to my cozy bed as it’s Sunday and my 1 day of rest before a long work week. Hahaha. Chris P sends his love and approves this message. Love Chalo and Chris P

Hey guys i just finished reading your blog. So much detail about all your crazy adventures across Asia. It is so crazy how easy it seemed for all of you to easily meet up even though you were all coming from different corners of the globe. The pictures were amazing and breathtaking. Moms and my trip so insignificant in comparison to your trek across Vietnam. While we were soaking in the sun of Florida you were seeing all the historical sights of Asia. I am sure they were absolutely amazing seeing all the tombs and little market places. The villiage on water must have been something else! I cant believe that there is an entire civlization floating on water that even includes a school! I am loving the blog and Carrie seems to fit into the Asian lifestyle very easily. Did she have some extreme jetlag? Mom and I only had a 2.5 hour flight and that was enough for us. Couldnt imagine a flight 6 times as long! Keep up the blog guys it seems so amazing knowing all of your crazy adventures while we are snowed in with 20 feet of snow! It was a rude awakening coming back from all the heat to flying in over Toronto for the first time and seeing it appear through the clouds. Cant wait to see you guys again the summer cant come soon enough! Much love, Lauren

Anyway it's very interesting looking at the photos of your Shanghai home, work and all. Before long I'll be there with you. What's a few maggots... - From: Shanghai: Week 17
Dear Martha, Thanks for the chuckle. You sound in fine form, too! I love getting your take on things...it keeps the maggots and mayhem in perspective. There are days when a bunch of wriggling larvae for sale seems quite normal, and, yes, your boss is right...the terra-cotta soliders are mind-blowing...but then so are the maggots. (i think that three times is enough for the......M_ _ _ _ _ _ _!!) Just add them to the long list of other incredible things that make up everyday life over here. But then come on down and see for yourselves...how many times does one get the chance to see mag.... - oops! and all such other mind-boggling sights? Glad to hear from you! Deck them halls this Xmas...and have a great new year! Add coming to Shanghai to your resolutions! Love, Amy

Dear Martha, YOU had me at the Xmas dinner and lost me with the 25-40 cm of snow!! Ho-ho-ho! Love, Amy

I feel smarter already! What a great trip/experience for you two, my old boss went to see the soldiers and she said it was overwhelming. Tomorrow were having xmas dinner for the Feef you must be excited about seeing him. Tonight were in the middle of a snow storm, 25-40 cm expected, so I better go round up some soldiers of my own to dig me out. Love Martha

Yes, Cathy truly was loved - From: Shanghai Week 12
Dear Cindy, And maybe that is the greatest testament to a person...that they were loved as much as Cathy was. Thanks for the lovely comments, Cindy. I'm glad to hear from you, and hopefully we can share holidays together in the future...All the best, Amy

Cathy was truly amazing... - From: Shanghai Week 12
Dear Car, Yes, Cathy was so incredible...and it's still so hard to believe that she is gone from our lives. Now that Xmas is approaching I remember her last two Christmases she shared with us, and I'm so glad we got to have those. Let's try to keep her with us by remembering all of those good times...Love, Mom

Our Canadian Brains are agog too... - From: Shanghai Week 12
Dear Carly, Thanks for the nice comment...your dad is busily reading "1421: The Year China Discovered the World"...maybe he's cribbing for his takeover??!! I'm glad you enjoyed the mini-lesson on Chinese history...no comments yet on any mistakes I made, so that's very positive. I'm re-reading "Frontiers of Heaven: A Journey to the End of China" by Stanley Steward, a man who travelled across China via the Silk Road, and his Xian leg seems to coorborate everything I said, so that's heartening! Fascinating read...maybe we can head out on the Silk Road next... Love you...Mom

Finally Dad has achieved his greatest wish, an army that he can command! Thanks for the very informative blogpost guys... The history of China is very impressive. My Chinese history is mainly 20th Century. My Canadian brain can't comprehend anything longer. Love you both, Carly

Hey guys! - From: Week 9: Entry 4
Dear Marth and Lauren, It was GREAT to hear from you both!! Marth, you are mother of the year, and Lauren, you'll have to work hard in order to keep your mom in the style she wants to become accustomed to :-) But seriously, as you know by now the Feef should be on his way back to Washington after Cathy's funeral. I felt terrible about not being able to attend, and that is a big problem with the distance from home. And yes, I do get homesick, especially when a tragedy happens like Cathy's sudden passing away. Last weekend I felt so sad thinking about her past Xmas, and knowing that was her last one with us. I really wished I could go to the funeral, but when we heard that Chris was going we felt that he could be the family's representative, because of the tremendous distance we would have to go. I'm really proud of Chris giving up his Cuba holiday and I'm so glad he was there for Carly and Craig Jr. and Sr. I'm glad you're enjoying the blogs, but we are suspending them in light of the sad news. I'll miss Cathy and her warmth, courage and love for life. Her passing has left a void in our family, as well as the loss of a friend. Take care you guys. Something like this makes one really appreciate their loved ones, and your message came just at the right moment. Love, Amy PS -- don't forget Shanghai in your travel plans :-)

hi - From: Week 9: Entry 4
Hi you two, really digging the blogs, sounds like you are working hard. Carrie said she was talking to you, lots of school meetings. You mentioned Roel is feeling home sick, are you too? As you mentioned its getting darker here, probablly around 630. Winter is coming but that being said it was a beautiful day 24 degrees, I went down to Cherry Beach to walk Daisy and their were many sailboats out, I was thinking about you two. Carrie, Chalo, Chris P and of course the Feef are all off to Cuba next weekend, I wish Lauren and I could go but can't with Lauren's school, but we are going on a cruise during Lauren's reading week in Feb. Keep blogging, love the stories..Love Martha...here is Lauren....I like the blog. Its great hearing about your adventures in China. Glendon is slowly becoming my new habitat for learning. Its a lot different from Malvern, hard to get into how organized you have to be, especially how laid back Malvern was with due dates and all. I am talking to Carly, and it is great hearing her graduate adventures in Washington. It's good to hear that you and Roel are starting to get into the new life style of the adventurous, exotic travellers. Keep up with the blog and so we can hear all about your new life. Love you both. Lauren

Headbangers are us - From: Shanghai: Week 6 - Entry 3
Hey Marth! It was great to hear from you and, yes, you HAVE to get a computer! Take it from a headbanger...it's time to get in the groove 21st century-wise!! Besides, it makes the distances a lot smaller. It was nice to hear about Thanksgiving, and I think Harry is trying to speak to me...I forgot about his birthday (that happens over here a lot...Craig are you reading? Mike? oops!!) and then I had a vivid dream about him...and after reading your message i think it was on his birthday!! So Harry is still with us :-) So get a computer and get online and drop me a line!! Have to run now...work is beckoning. Tell Lauren i think about her all the time at Glendon, working hard...is she enjoying it? Tell her that's an absolute must! Talk to you later. Say hi to the gang, Love, Amy

hey - From: Shanghai: Week 6 - Entry 3
Hi you two, your blog is great sounds like your adventure is going well (except for that market selling frogs and EELS!), your apartment looks very cute and cozy. Everything here is good just had turkey dinner, quiet without you two headbangers. Lauren is grooving along at Glendon with papers starting to loom. Happy Anniversary, 35 yrs is quite a milestone, was also Harry's BD on the 10th, on thanksgiving we watched movies with him, but it made us all a little sad. I will keep in touch, Lauren got a laptop for school, so I'm getting more into that thing called the web. Love you, Martha.

Hey Mom and Dad! Glad to know that you are alive and well, despite the noise, heat, scooters and typhoons. Thanks for the wonderful blog entry.. Craig and I really enjoyed reading it. The pictures of Shanghai that you posted don't really add up.. It seems like you two are in the Chinese Monte Carlo or something (or have they been doctored by the comrades??). Can't wait for the next installment! Love you both, Carly and Craig
