The very far east of Shanghai - we ride all the way in hard trails reaching to this piece of land - wild, calm nothing else; beautiful seasonal birds resting throughout the wetlands, probably the most pleasant field for buffalos, unwind scenes without seeing any boundaries - this is perhaps the last paradise out of Shanghai. Completing a total 72 kms in and out on rough trails, bypassing few villages, probably one of the best ride so far in a 1-hour reachable distance out of greater Shanghai area. Yet, best transportation to feel the touch - on a mountain bike, no others.... read more

Perhaps, one of the very few ancient town left over in China - pure and tranquil village with over 500 historical houses lying by the south east of Mt. Huang, the little tasteful town has more than 750 years old history with many old traditions kept till today. Running stream from north to south cutting into the middle of the town, the stream is still a main part of the people living everyday; resident washes vegetables, clothing and all kind of daily necessities from the river; even my elder son, age 13, love this little place, we spent a night there on our round-the-lake ride and it remains one of the best memory of our entire 170km ride. As modern life strike at every piece of our life, I selfishly hope this place will be kept ... read more

Well, a bit disappointing! Intending to enjoy real and remotely quiet, crystal clear island, uniquely resort - Gayana Eco Resort, ya to some extent yes, but looking at the price we paid for it (USD 360 a night) - I'd say, there is still a lot to improve though the staffs are working hard to show a difference. The entire atmosphere, details and environment - more or less a 4 stars standard. There are lot of flooding rubbish at high tide, the shadow beach is not as crystal clear as we expected may be it is just too close to the city (where it is not really well maintained and developed, pitiful!); disappointing numbers of tropical fishes and corals we dream to watch. Overall, the sense of exclusivity, private, unique are missing at the asked price. ... read more

Definite a struggling to wake up at 5a especially at this winter time for a golf game one hour away from home! It must be something really excited to sacrifice sleeping time out from the warming blanket! I never missed the wake up call if that's opting for a game of golf even after a late night works with less than 4 hours sleep. A standard journey will be starting with a McDonald breakfast to-go (pitiful no McCafe at 5a!), soft Jazz by Lisa Ono, and a pleasant traffic-free drive to the golf course accompanying by day breaking scenes at dawn! The trip is full of inspiration of what's next? Binhai links golf course, uniquely lying on the edge of East Sea out of south east of Shanghai - tranquility, peaceful and a feeling of being ... read more

It might not be as famous as Pulau Gaya out of Kota Kinabalu, but Manukan Island is tiny yet gorgeous! Crystal clear water, millions of sea fishes and close touch of tropical climate - not far from the city jetty, an easy 25-mins boat ride brings you to this unwind nature! The striking moment is when the boat arriving into the deck, probably 150 meters lining out of the white sandy beach, we would see thousands of tropical fishes swimming 20 meters beneath, well, "jump into the sea!" - spending few nights on the island could be romantically back to basic if luxurious amenities are not in demand. Short, sandals, sun and silent-reflection - elements needed at Manukan!... read more

It said this is the last piece of heaven left over in greater Shanghai - Chongming Island, across the Yangzhe River! Few years back before the bridge was ready, it took 3 hours to get on a ferry where 2 hours are on 'q' for boarding; it takes less than 30 minutes now by car - and it is a pleasant drive over the 'sea'. Some great outdoor activities available here, particularly, bike riding is the best and bird watching, white stork is one of them! Oh ya, one of the best relaxing way to enjoy this island - find a quiet urban road, explore the unlimited landscape surrounds you, park your car in between common reeds and bare beaches, and enjoy BBQ or reading or just do nothing hearing the wind, bird's flying and wide, ... read more

Visited this special place right after a friend's recommendation. No regret. It is a gorgeous and quiet place within the city, many might not even know there is such a place nearby! Plentiful of galleries and design studio, newmoma showroom is particularly unique. It lies at the far end within the old, tall and wide factory building. Mixture of cement and cramped-wood form the interior - the concept is great with collections from artist of ceramic out of Jingdezhen, Shanxi Province. What I feel it is missing, a cozy cafe by the Suzhou river! Worth a few hours retreat and recovery of brain-dried there at M50!... read more

Ya, there is such a place in Zhujiajou, 1 hour drive out of Shanghai on the west, an old hundred years old village, called West Well Cafe. The Cafe runs by three young partners tiring of city life, hectic pressures and political struggling, set up their dream land in this quiet place. That is another kind of attitude differs from most common practice. Well, it has since become one of the best place for us to visit on and off, 120 KMs 2 hours drive, it is just worth every penny and time. Don't miss out the cozy rooms at West Well, it somehow scares you at late night as it is just so quiet and dark in the 700 years old building, sky is absolute clean. Enjoy!... read more

2 weeks back to the city from Lijiang, started to miss the tranquility at the dawn in Lijang, the morning sun shining into the window for a slow start of the day, ya, not to mention the nice and easy jazz songs surrounding Prague Cafe! It is really a slow pace old town to unwind our pressures from works in cosmopolitan lifestyle - fast, results, and money. I assume, probably quite true, longer life can be expected there in Lijiang or any similar places around the world with such a condition - fresh air, unrestricted mindset and nothing to lose mentality.... read more

A week would be a perfect span of time exploring the old town and oneself. Mixture of noises and quietness, there is a balance for everyone in Lijiang. I met so many people here from around the world, they live here, short or long, without actual planning. Some, for soul search and some for the sun and weather! " Call me next time you visit Lijiang! " The Naxi driver sent me to the airport, which is the last call for him today as he can't wait to enjoy another round of relaxing moment with his buddies under the sun! Well, I'm sure everyone gets something on the return journey! See ya Lijiang.... read more
