I love the fun. Travel. and Jesus Christ. From The Bahamas in winter of 2007/08, to my relocation to New Zealand, follow along and maybe even suggest some ideas, because I'm always up for anything, well almost anything...

After a sleepless night and food that is easily worse than most any airline’s I was very happy to be picked up in Melbourne by Maris and quickly introduced to her boyfriend Alex and mate Kyran. Before I sat down, we loaded up two cars with a trailer and headed for Lorne, with over 3500 sausages in tow. We set up shop at the Falls Festival and then escaped to relax at Rough ‘n Tumble before the three days of sausage mania began. Because when more than 15,000 drinking, smoking and whatever-else-ing party goers congregate around two stages to watch the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wolfmother, Grizzly Bear, Moby, Liam Finn, Seasick Steve and some thirty others for three days, they eventually get hungry. Enter the Gourmet Bangers stand, where we hussled to make the most extravagent ... read more

We arrived in Sydney to an uncomfortable humid heat wave, like how your broccoli casserole might feel as its placed into a preheated oven. Wandering the streets we settled for the cheapest hostel we could find between Kings Cross and downtown Sydney, Boomerang Backpackers. Each morning for the rest of the week we awoke from late nights to what could only be described as the sounds of container ships speeding dense fog. Most of the waking daylight was spent walking in every direction, Darling Harbour, Chinatown, Botanical Gardens, the Opera House or caching a Ferry/Bus to one of the beautiful beaches surrounding the harbour, Bondi and Manly mostly. By the week's end, Will and I had walked most every inch of Sydney and lit up every dance floor. Exhausted after a week of teaching Sydney how ... read more

The Many Roads to Te Anau

I arrived in Queenstown after a childhood fantasy of riding on the upper deck of a double-decker bus from Dunedin, which turned out to be quite nauseating on the NZed twisty roadways. Will was ready to party the last day of No-shave November away and eager to hitchhike out of town the next day. After a bit of goofing off roadside, three different friendly kiwis gave us lifts in the direction of Te Anau. The last of friendly soul was Dave, who showed us the local watering hole, The Redcliff, which was eerily similar to a smoke free Neptune’s. He took us for a session of wake boarding in the water that was barely above freezing and some exploration out on Lake Te Anau, Australasia’s largest fresh(ice)water lake. To get out of the worthless routine ... read more

Next up the South Island- notorious for a more country, laid back lifestyle. I boarded a plane aimed for Christchurch and after an uneventful stroll through the Cathedral marketplace I loaded my duffel on a bus destined for Dunedin, one of the oldest cities in NZ. Even though summer had begun to dissipate the student population that is so prevalent in Dunedin, it still has a relatively young and lively feel, while much the photographs say it’s all old as Moses. I headed for Fairfield first, a farming suburb outside town to WWOOF on the Grant Farm with two true-blue Kiwis, Tom and Jeanette. The Grants warmly welcomed me to their Worm/Sheep Farm and B&B in the countryside where they spent most of their whole lives. Tom, 81 years young, moved faster, steadier and stronger ... read more

Being the only American Spicer in NZ, I 'raced' down to Wellington via a twelve hour bus trip and stayed in the nicest hostel I have found, the YHA. Halloween out with Galen, who I hadn't seen in fifteen years was a great time. He put me up for a few days while I explored Wellington, the numerous harbours, steep 'hills', the local art museums and Te Papa - the best national mueseum I have come across - which was actually free. The City Art Gallery was chalked full of Yusama's dot works, which to say the least were bizzarely interesting. On a budget I sought out an organic farm to live on for the next few weeks. After sending out emails to a few, including (by accident) an 'Au Natural' - nudist farm, I managed ... read more

So we headed to Northland in search of warm weather. We found warm welcomes but not much for weather. Stopping in Whangarei to visit family friends Chip and Barbara (who moved from Wilmington a number of years ago) and explore the area on our way north. In light wind we sailed around infront of their beautiful farm estate, hiked Mt Manaia in heavy winds and caught some fun surf on a sunny day. The sun here is stronger than about anywhere else, because of the weak ozone above, so a clear sky goes a long way in warming you up. We left the comfort of a home away from home to head for Pahia in search of boats, jobs and boating jobs. Pahia is a the little Wrightsville Beach of NZ - which was still rather ... read more

Out of desperation and essentially survival Allen and I departed the cold-weather-plagued island named after the dutch province of Zeeland. We walked, almost sprinted from excitement out of the Nadi airport to start ten days of vacation from vacation. Small swells and high prices of the Tavarua and Cloudbreak resorts kept us from channeling our innner Kelly Slaters/Jeff Hubbards. We settled on settle on island hopping up the Yasawa Islands. Nadi was unimpressive - picture a Indian populated, tropical town that was the destroyed by WWIII, crap everywhere - but very friendly people. Within the first 5 minutes of our cab ride, our sketchy but bubbly cab driver offered both Indian working women of the night and various amounts of weed for a fair price. Fortunately, everything legitimized as we left the main island. No island ... read more

"Like children realizing they are in candyland!" thats how a bystandard would have described my facial expression. With 2 scooters with plenty of coastal roads to explore, it's quite liberating going 60+ km/hour on the duct-tape bound instruments we hired on Waiheke Island. Only stopping for a little lunch, a wine tasting and what turned out to be 30 min of laughing at the alpacas, we navigated most every road on the island. We returned to Auckland, for one of the best nights out yet, at the Physio Ball, in Mission Bay (Auckland), with all the Physical therapy students - a course of study that was fortunately still dominated by women Then back down to my Ruapehu, in our specially requested maunual Nissan POS. After a night out with the liftees and Andrew's other coworkers, we ... read more

On down (via a $40 plane ticket - so cheap it was sketical) to Christchurch (which is actually the furthest thing from Christ or a Church) and then piled into the nissan that we came to know as "Bessie" or "All The Stuff I Own." Salvador Dahli was the inspiration for our van's graphic presentation, which drew plenty of attention and laughs. We headed west towards Arthurs Pass for snow, and after getting half way up the learning curve of driving her, on the left, up n down moutain roads, in the snow and rain and wind, we crashed......for the night, in a little park next to a lake(I'm not good with names?). Testing out the gas grill, we chowed on lamb steaks and washed it down with plenty of Speights (the PBR of New Zealand) ... read more

Since I first recieved a warm kiwi welcome from complete strangers in Auckland, it's been a blurr. The first few days consisted of wondering around Auckland jet-lagged, a little confused and completely lost. Things started to pick up when I headed for Hamilton to pay Jacob a visit. After a night on the town with some of his fellow med student flat mates, we headed to Mt. Manganui on the east coast to catch a few waves. I managed to find a decent bodyboard in Jacob's buddy's garage. 12C and blowin stink. I paddled out into a lineup of mostly kayakers - who were getting handled by the head high surf. We scarfed down some oranges and meat pies roadside, warmed up and had another go at the ice cream headache causing swell literally coming from ... read more
