OK... its been a long 24 days. We stayed in Hampi for a week. The second day we were there the rain let up and I didn't throw up. We took the coracle over the sacred ford... translation = we took a the small, falling apart ferry across the river... We found a cheap place and decided to "move" the next day. On the way back Rue got in a little bit of a disagreement with the boy that collected the fees on the boat. That night I cut Rue's hair off with my eyebrow trimmng scissors... it took a while [View Full Entry]

OK... so we arrived in Mumbai on Monday, November 3, at dawn. Since this is our third international airport arrival on this trip, we are already hardened to the taxi and hotel offers and were very put off by the man that overcharged us for using the public phone and the man that swore to us that we would never find a room in Mumbai for under 2500 rupees... we did find one for 500 rupees. Sidenote: if you visit Mumbai or India, make use of the prepaid taxi stands at the airport so you don't have to haggle over the [View Full Entry]

Well first I must apologize that it has been quite some time since I have written... I will try to summarize as much as possible all the things that have happened since my last entry... In Luxor,we spontaneously rented a motorbike to get to the other side of the Nile and visit the Valley of the Kings. We did not intend to rent a bike but when we left the hotel that morning there was a foriegner outside "testing" his rental out and the idea got in our heads... Rue was really excited. We first went to see about getting our [View Full Entry]

Adrift on the Nile... Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Luxor
"Adrift on the Nile" is the novel I am reading now, so appropriate, no? The author is the Egyptian Nobel prize winner Naguib Mafhouz. It takes place in the late 60's and centers around a group of friends, mid forties, all very successful... that gather every evening on a houseboat on the Nile, to smoke kif from the water pipe and chat about nothing really except the matters of seriousness versus absurdity... the meaning of life or lack there of... appropriate, no? It been a little bit and we have had a lot of kinks in the journey, so many to [View Full Entry]

We have been in Egypt for an entire week now. But first back to Maroc for a moment. Tangiers gets a bad rap... everyone and the guidebook told us to expect a seedy place with not much to offer except the ferries to Spain. But it was very nice. The beach, the scene, the medina. We were there for the last day of Ramadan and splurged and went to a bar for one very strong Vodka tonic and a beer for Rue. I think you could feel the seediness of the past in the ambience but it only inspires us to [View Full Entry]

Yes, it has been quite some time. Well we enjoyed our "long" stay in Essaouira and headed through Marrakesh once again to get to the Cascades de Ouzoud. It took us two buses, a grand taxi and a long downhill hike to get to the "camping" place. In OUzoud we slept in a Berber tent, had a beautiful lunch overlooking the falls and a cliff with at least 3 troops of Barbary Apes, which are actually monkeys, climbing it... then we spent an entire afternoon jumping over waterfalls and into natural pools... I felt like I was 10 years old again. [View Full Entry]

When we first decided to come to Morocco I was doing very brief research online and read a short paragraph about Essaouira and was instantly enticed. Now we are here and we are in love. We arrived Tuesday morning and immediately found a penthouse flat near the bus station and outside of the medina. We negotiated a good rate and we think we got quite a deal for a full apartment with a kitchen and private bathroom for the grand total of 120 dollars for the entire week. That day we slept and slept. We laid down for a nap and [View Full Entry]

Ok, very quickly an update. We arrived in Agadir yesterday. Since my last entry we left Marrakesh and traveled by bus through the Atlas mountains to Ouarzazate (everybody try to pronounce that 5 times slowly). This is the town where they have filmed Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Alexander the Great and Kingdom of Heaven. Very interesting place. We actually quite a efw characters here one old looking hippy dude that told us a couple of stories, one about how he almost met Bob Dylan but was so stoned he didnůt recognize him... and then he asked us if we wanted to [View Full Entry]

Ok here it is folks, so many of you requested that I do this while abroad, so I am trying this blogging thing out, then you guys can read at your leisure and not be bombarded with constant update emails from me while you all work frantically to forget me. first forgive my spelling and typos as I am trying to get used to the french/arabic keyboards. Speaking of french and arabic, LaRue and I speak neither and it has posed quite some obstacles for us but we are managing. We arrived in Marrakesh on Friday after 4 hours on a [View Full Entry]
