DINOSAUR Valley Our college hosts outings for all the teachers every once in awhile, though, we, the foreign teachers as we are referred to, typically have a different outing from the Chinese teachers. Two weeks ago we went to a newly opened (last year) dinosaur excavation park located 1 ½ hours from the college. We left early so we would have a full day of viewing, plus lunch and still make it back by dinner. As is the case, however, rarely does anything go according to plan in China, and the 1 ½ hour bus ride there turned into a close to 5 hour trip due to, what else, but some road repair work. What made matters worse was that the delay occurred 15 minutes from the park when we had to turn off the main ... read more

HAPPY SPRING FESTIVAL 2009 I wanted to share our Spring Festival experiences sooner than later, so am hoping to get a quick blog put together this morning while Ya-Li does her schoolwork. We had heard the area around our campus would more or less shut down for about 4 weeks once we approached the week before the holiday (January 26). But hearing that and seeing it are 2 different things. Upon our return from our trip to southern Yunnan, we were more or less shocked at the transition our neighborhood had undergone from a loud, bustling, crowded mass of students/locals/merchants and cars/buses/vans/trucks/horse-n-carts/bicycles/motorbikes that seemed to cover every square inch of open sidewalk or street to…………nothing. The openings of nearly every vendor store were closed up tight and scarcely a person could be spotted for blocks. WOW! ... read more

Back in October we were invited by the college to enjoy a day at Black Dragon Pond……Resort?....Park?.......Center? It was not clear to us exactly what the grounds were used for, but it was a fairly close destination to our campus, so the 45 minute bus ride provided us the opportunity to spend a day in a non-city environment. The setting was beautiful, a combination of traditional Chinese architecture, ponds, bridges, walkways and …….forests. I guess due to the weather, we were the only ones there that day, even though it looked as if it could accommodate hundreds of people. It was dark, cold and rainy, not unlike close to every day last year in Juneau, so we felt at home with being out and enjoying whatever it was we were supposed to do and enjoy. The ... read more

So OK, maybe we are in the season to be jolly (OK, now we are actually well past it, but that is when I wrote most of this blog), but since time seems to get away from us here, thought I would post some “ancient history” to fill in what we have been doing. So for this blog, please travel back with us to October……. and pretend it is a time of harvest moons and pumpkins and trick-or-treatin’. Never quite sure what my students know about our holidays in the states, I typically bring the subject up about a week before, and have been greeted with everything from looks of confusion and bewilderment to complete knowledge of the hows, whys, and wherefores. (Perhaps it has to do with whom their Foreign English teacher was last year.) ... read more

We are having a wet and rainy weekend, so decided to carve out some time today to add a few new blogs. Over Chinese National Day, which was back on October 1, we were given a week off during which we travelled to one of the most visited sites in Northern Yunnan, Lijiang. Lijiang is a 10 hour bus trip northwest of Kunming and sits at about 8000 feet, 1500 ft higher than Kunming. We were accompanied by our friends Wendy and her daughter Zoe, (who used to live down the road from us in Juneau) while her husband Tom stayed behind to catch up on lesson preparations. The weather in and around Lijiang is about as much of a crapshoot as it is in Juneau. So things did not bode well when it poured the ... read more

So much has happened since our last entry. The days merge from one to the next and all of a sudden more weeks have flown by. We had a wonderful Mid Autumn Festival (Moon Festival) as friends from Alaska, also living here, came to visit with their daughter. As they like to hike about, we took our first "check out the neighborhood" walk since arriving. As you can see from the pictures, we are in an older part of Kunming where "urban renewal" has not yet taken hold. In fact, we awake every morning promptly at 6:30 with the many neighborhood roosters crowing their little hearts out. The little street which goes in front of our school's gate, is narrow, winding, and flanked on both sides by stoned in trenches or waterways which carry the aromatic ... read more

HELLO AGAIN FROM KUNMING Another week has passed and due to Monday being a National Holiday for Mid Autumn Festival (which actually falls on Sunday, Sept 14) we are enjoying a 3 day weekend. Actually it is almost 4 days for us as I only have one class to teach on Friday which ends a bit before 10 am. As for my classes, I am slowly beginning to get to know all my students, which collectively equal around 110. Many have chosen English names which makes both pronouncing and remembering easier, but one class has a number of students who have not chosen English names, so struggling thru as correct a pronunciation as I can is the order of those days. I have 4 classes: 3 are referred to as Business English, and the 4th is ... read more

We have finally made it to Kunming. Juneau seems like a very distant memory, but our departure almost didn't happen. Luckily our friends Kathy and Tim helped get us out the door and to the airport with only moments to spare. I will forever be in their dept for making me buck up, focus, and get our suitcases packed. Our flights were on time, and uneventful. Thankfully.  It allowed us to sleep and refresh from close to 3 months of packing our house up.  We flew to Anchorage Friday nite, Aug 22, then took a 4:10 am flight to Taipei, connecting to Hong Kong later that morning, (a day ahead) and finally to Kunming, where we arrived around 2:30 pm Sunday afternoon. We were met at the airport by our school liaison, whom we now call ... read more
