Chief Rob

I am now officially recognised as a Chief by the Mitai Maori tribe. Having covered a wide range of the extreme activities that Rotorua has to offer I decided to take in some culture. I was keen to learn more about the indigenous Maori culture I had already visited some museums and read about Maori history but I wanted to see it for real so I decided to go and spend an evening with the Mitai on

Looking for that rush

Whilst on the road between locations we stopped of at a few places to check out some of the GeoThermal activity bubbling mud pools geysers steam rising from the ground that type of thing. We had an extreme action packed day in Rotorua. First on the list was the Luge we had done this already in Queenstown but their are three tracks here and it it is much longer and faster. There are a couple

Rocket Man

Today I flew around a canyon in a little rocket and it was pretty cool. This is one of the many ways to kill yourself on offer in Quennstown. Well like many of the activities its probably perfectly safe but Queenstown is the extreme sports capital of New Zealand and there is loads to do here. This particular activity is called Fly By Wire and it quite literally allows you to fly a little rocket

The Haunted hostel

On our road trip we stopped at a University town called Dunedin. We found a hostel just out of the town centre and booked into it. The guy working there gave us the grand tour of the place. It was an old building nice solid looking place with big spacious rooms big hallway with a wide old style staircase that doglegs round up to the first floor. He showed us the room he had for us it was nice

Mount Cook

So I'm in New Zealand on the South Island which is just about as far away from home as I could possibly be. We go to see a mountain called Mount Cook which is pretty much in the middle of the South Island one road in and out to go and see it. We get there and as you would expect it's pretty deserted we are the only two people there looking at the landscape which is pretty spectacular like no

On The Road Again

We rented our car and once again we are on the road travelling. The landscapes here however are much more diverse than those we encountered in Australia. While on the road I tend to play my Ukulele a lot a more and it was early into this road trip that I wrote my first song which I put to self composed music. It's actually the second song I have written since being away but I haven't put the fir

Christchurch

We landed in Christchurch and caught a bus into the town centre I think they call it a city centre but that would probably create a false image for anyone who's not been there As I observed the views from the bus window I thought that it looked very 'English' at least as far as the natural surroundings were concerned the parks and trees etc. The architecture of the buildings is not so typica

Glassford Creek is a 4000 acre property about a 1 hours drive inland from a small town called Miriam Vale on the East coast. The terminology 'farm' or 'ranch' could be used for identification purposes but technically it is a cattle station. They do cater for guests but only in small numbers at any one time as it is a working cattle station and as a guest you are helping with the day to day runnin

The train from Miriam Vale took me to a place called Landsborough where I was met by relatives of mine whom I have been in contact with since I arrived in Australia. We had never met or even spoken to each other before I came away so it was nice to meet with them for the first time and interesting to find out a little bit more about the family. They were kind enough to put me up for the night w

We went back to Sydney and went back to the same hostel although the area of Kings Cross is scumsville we liked the actual hostel and we thought its better the devil you know. I know I went on about how bad the area was in the last entry and just to highlight that I wasn't exaggerating since I have left Matt stayed for an extra week and tells me he couldn't get back into the hostel for several

We rented a car between the three of us me Matt and James and drove up into the Blue Mountains for a few days where we had planned to meet up with the other Matt and Carla again. The Blue Mountains are so called because of the blue haze that is created by all the eucalyptus up there. We had a good couple of days and got back to nature but it is amazing how the temperature drops up there it is

We arrived in Sydney late in the day we had booked into a Hostel In Kings Cross. This is the first proper hostel I have actually stayed in so far. Kings Cross is not really the nicest area in Sydney it seems to be full of crack whores pimps gangsters tramps and crazies. I don't mind the crazies so much because they are often quite funny but over all the area is pretty seedy I can think of a

Defeated but not deflated

Having travelled around the whole island I returned to Hobart unsuccessful in achieving my main goal of obtaining a confirmed sighting of a Thylacine. I was not too disappointed as I had experienced some fantastic landscapes and had a great time along the way. Maybe I'll return again in the future now more experienced and better prepared but for the time being I put it to the back of my mind

Through study and field exploration I have become an expert on Australian mammals and I would like to take you all o

Life on the farm was good. I found out all about how a rotary dairy works with a herd of 550 cows. I helped install a new 350kg water tank and I explored the surrounding fields and woodlands on a Trail Bike. The Trail bike bike was great fun there were a lot of tracks through the surrounding woodlands certainly not as dense as the bush I had been in previously but the bike obviously allowed me

As we set off Revel said that he wanted Trevor to come with us. Trevor is a local.....bushman I guess you could call him. Trevor doesn't have a telephone so the only way to speak to him is to turn up at his house which we did.We found him out the front of his old minors cottage tending to his garden. Revel did the introductions and pleasantries then said to him we're going on a bush walk and I

Hobart is in the East of Tasmania I set a course anti clockwise around the island. My first stop was at a farm where I stayed with a lovely couple called Helen and Revel.I'd been studying the native Australian Mammal population it's important to have a broad understanding of all indigenous wildlife in order to track just one species otherwise I might spend three days on a the trail only
