Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris January 4th 2009

Paris was wonderful and everything that it lives up to. I was not sure how to title this entry since I wanted to attempt to capture everything that happened on New Year's in Paris but also include other things that I just did not mention earlier. Sorry that it has taken me a few days to enter my last blog from my trip because I wanted to summarize a lot and I could not do it on the European keyboard. Paris Wow, what a wonderful city with culture, history, romance, beautiful places, people from around the world and oh yeah - tons of tourists! It would be hard for someone not to love it. I walked over the Pointe Alexandre III (or one of the bridges from the left bank to right bank of Paris) and ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris December 30th 2008

Tuesday started out nice and then the weather turned and it could have been miserable... We saw beautiful blue skies early on then rain, snow, sleet and probably freezing rain before I returned back to the hotel. Instead of going to the museums, I met up with my friend Isabelle from Paris and we hit one of the shopping districts and shopped until I could not carry the bags any longer. The shopping was great but it is kinda a disapointment when you see something because you have to add another 40 percent to the price due to the current exchange rate. Plus my foot is still killing me, but more on that later... Isabelle also taught me that friends kiss each other twice if they have not seen each other and three times if it ... read more

No matter how many times I visit this city, I am always in awe... On Monday, I took a city tour for a few hours to let my foot rest and also stay warm. I am always amazed that people pay money to ride a bus around town but never look out the windows or plug in their headphones. I took the grand city tour that hit all of the highlights and then took another one that showed the st germain or latin district. The city is very accessible by metro and there is always one less than 500 meters away. The weather is still cold, but my foot is killing me. It did not stop me from walking nearly 3 kilometers or almost 2 miles. I am staying in the Rue Cler district which is ... read more

I arrived in Paris today after what would be a short train ride but it seemed very long. I was in such a hurry to get on the train today that I did not notice we had assigned seats. I thought i picked a seat away from the crowd then when some nice French woman said I was sitting in her seat, I realized it was too good to be true. My assigned seat was across from this man who smiled at me the entire time and a girl who never heard of deodorant. What a long trip. I spent most of the day on Sunday walking around the city again trying to take everything in. There is so much to see but it is difficult since I believe I broke my foot somehow. I am ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels December 28th 2008

Brussels is famous as the unofficial capital of Europe and the place where many business people come. However their landmarks are something different. I thought there was a miss-print in my book, but no. Their grand palace or square has beautiful statues on top of the buildings all pointing in different directions. The statues are pointing to...who tooted {who farted}. All around town the statues point in a different direction of who passed the gas. The other famous landmark here is of man peeing. Seriously??? Besides all of the funny statues Brussels is a beautiful city with a lot of culture. The people are very nice and curious as to American politics. Last night I had dinner with a lovely couple currently from Belgium but originally from the Congo. They each speak four languages and their ... read more

What can be said besides...amazing! If you are black or white, man or women, democrat or republican, American citizen or other nationality it did not matter on Tuesday, November 4th in Chicago's Grant Park. History happens every day and to be there when so many people were celebrating history happen was something words are hard to describe. It has taken me a few weeks to post this entry since the evening mainly because I still have not found the right words to describe the feeling in the air. While on business, I met a few friends in Chicago on Tuesday, November 4th. For weeks before the election the polls predicted Senator Barak Obama would become the next president of the United States. We anticipated the victory when we were there, but it was something that the ... read more

The mecca of golf...Sawgrass Golf Course. I am not a very good or experienced golfer, but to play a beautiful course makes you want to play beautiful courses every day. A couple friends and headed to Jacksonville to play Sawgrass, "The Players Course". It is what the pros play for a multi-million dollar tournament every year and we bet for $20 who would have the lowest score. When you walk off the shuttle bus to the club house, the staff treats you like you are royalty (which is not hard to get used to)! Everything is set up, your practice round, your caddie, the clubs, and an estimate of how well you will do that day. Let's just say, I lost track of my score after the 2nd hole. So, my friend Brenda and I decided ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich October 8th 2008

I hope to capture all of the exciting things and sites of my experience at the 2008 Oktoberfest in Germany. It is one of the best festivals - hands down. There is nothing like it in the States to compare, but hopefully for my family and friends reading this you will gain some additional insight. The "Oktoberfest" occurs for 16 days every year in Munich, Germany. It starts out on the third to last Saturday of the month of September and finishes on the first Sunday in October. Several years ago, the organizers moved it up to start in September for better weather conditions. This year, they expected nearly 6 million visitors to attend the festivities. And, it seemed like there were 6 million people there. Since I had not been to Munich before, it was ... read more

My sister and I made it back to the States yesterday and are safe and wanting already to go back on vacation! It is somewhat good to be home, but already miss the culture and diversity of Europe. The Europeans know what to take seriously and how to enjoy life. I am already missing the croissant for breakfast and beer throughout the day. This is the first time that we both have not craved a Fanta while there. We only had one and it was good, but pure sugar. Since I have only been home a few hours, I have been asked numerous times if I heard about the financial crisis in the US. The European television stations generally only carry one or two English stations. Usually, CNN World and the BBC in some areas. So, ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg September 28th 2008

Yesterday, we headed off to Austria for the day since it was just an hour and a half train ride from Munich. The country from what we saw of it on the train is quite beautiful and very much like Switzerland. We landed in Salzburg around 10AM and walked around the city for a few hours. The city is the hometown of Mozart so everything is around his life. There were gardens where he developed some of his music, a museum, birthplace, several music halls dedicated to him and everything in-between. Unfortunately we still have not got our temperature conversions right and were quite cold the entire day. It was supposed to be around 13C and it should have been around 55F but it never left the 40'sF. As for the drinking - we are both ... read more
