Thursday June 21, 2012 Petersburg Today is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. I really can’t say how long the days are. I went to bed at 10:30 PM & it was still light. There was plenty of light at 3:00 AM. I know that when the lights are out in the cabin it’s dark. It rained hard last night and by mid-morning it and stopped and this evening the sun is bright. You can tell the locals in Petersburg because they are wearing the shorts and tank tops while we foreigners are still in our fleeces. At 9:00 PM with the sparkling snowfields all around. We have a glimpse of the really high peaks on the mainland in the distance. That’s where the glaciers are. This morning we did ... read more

(June 19th Continued) Anan Bay provides poor anchorage in an exposed bay with a steeply shelving bottom. So we went into the mountains beneath the peaks and above the chasms, rounding a couple of island sentries and into Berg Bay with little green meadows between the tide line and the dense forest. Snow fields loom directly above us and tonight it is all ours to enjoy. Tuesday June 19th, 2012 Berg Bay to Ketchikan A cloud comforter lays gently over us early this morning as we lie in Berg Bay not wanting to move lest we ruffle the reflections on the water. After breakfast Kira took me for a spin in the Bullfrog going around to the estuary of Aaron Creek where we poked up to a waterfall and took pictures. As ... read more

Sunday June 17th, 2012 Ketchikan to Meyer’s Chuck We crossed Clarence Straits in zigzag fashion, quartering the waves, for the comfort of the passengers. Sailors refer to it as tacking and for powerboaters zigzagging is better than upchucking. There is lots of camaraderie on the public float in Meyer’s Chuck and a lady was taking orders for cinnamon (sticky) buns for tomorrow. Cassie is a local who makes them and might be regarded as the mayor of Meyer’s Chuck. Kira spotted a boy about Cole’s age fishing off the dock and she was off with her red bucket hunting for aquatic creatures. Our sometime bos’un, sometime marine biologist identified a large jellyfish as a Sea Blubber Cyanea capillata. It’s also called a Lion's Mane jellyfish and I have some riveting video... read more

Friday June 15, 2012 Three’s a Crew Kira is returning with us and we are a crew, older and more experienced seamen that on our voyage together last year. With only a captain and an admiral giving orders we need a boatswain (pronounced bo’sun) to the things bo’suns do, like help carry provisions down to the ship and perhaps calm the angry birds. This is the first airplane flight that she can remember finding novelty and excitement in all she sees including the nifty little tables that fold up against the seat in front. She brought crafts, activities and drawing pads intent on using them all on our 1 ¾ hour flight to Ketchikan. I probably should have hailed a taxi for the one-mile trek from the ferry landing to Bar ... read more

Saturday May 26, 2012 Ketchikan After posting a blog at Safeway we walked South to the "downtown" area of Ketchikan where the cruise ships tie up. There were four more in today and I hear they come in everyday all summer - in in the morning and out in the afternoon. We mingled with the passengers along streets full of gift shops, jewelry shops with hawkers at every door inviting us in. A boardwalk lined with shops was built out over a tumbling river where people can watch salmon spawning and bears eating them in season. We ate lunch at Annabelle's, which had a 19th century boom town atmosphere and good food. It's raining and blowing pretty hard so not many people are going in or out for the local fishing derby. Sunday May 27, 2012 ... read more

Wednesday May 23, 2012 Bishop Bay to Kumealon Island Cove Our itinerary today takes us through Grenville Channel a forty five mile long mostly straight fjiord that carries all the Inside Passage traffic and we felt like we had it all to ourselves. Steep green walls, hundreds of waterfalls, calm waters, and a carrying current were all ours today. When we had had enough we turned into the very back of a pretty little bay and watched the sun set. Thursday May 24, 2012 Kumealon Island Cove to Foggy Bay As we passed the entrances to the Port of Prince Rupert we saw at least five massive bulk carriers waiting to be loaded with some sort of ore, and bound for the orient. One ship, 867 feet long, carried the name Bulk Hong Kong - how ... read more

Tuesday May 22, 2012 Windy Bay to Bishop Bay Hot Springs The clouds lift and patches of sunlight show here and there as we travel down passages, through narrows, reaches and Channels. For many hours there is not a boat to be seen and we grumble a little when see any boat that disturbs the solitude. We turned into Butedale to see the ruins of an old cannery. Many of the large warehouses have collapsed and only one house had smoke rising from it and a light was on. What we marvelled at was the large waterfalls coming from Butedale Lake above us. We read that one old guy lives there and works to preserve what he can of this bygone place. A nice flood tide has carried us along for most of the morning and ... read more

Monday May 21, 2012 Oliver Cove to Windy Bay (Fjiordland) It was raining when we got up this morning and it has rained all day. We turned up Mathieson Channel into a gray drizzly Fjiordland and we discussed whether to take a shorter route through Jackson Passage to Finlayson Channel, the main Inside Passage Route or stay with our longer more scenic course perhaps without the scenery. We stayed the course and were rewarded with stupendous views up Kynock Inlet with its towering waterfalls and sheer granite cliffs rising thousands of feet above sea level. According to our charts in one spot where we sat the mountains above were 3,100 feet and the water beneath us was 1,339 feet deep. We drifted to within fifty feet of a cliff to take pictures of a waterfall and ... read more

Saturday May 19, 2012 Port McNeill to Fury Cove At 5:00 AM the lights on both boats were on and coffee was perking. We looked at charts and Dick said he would follow us and off we went into the sunrise. At 10 :40 AM we were rounding Cape Caution in Queen Charlotte Sound and of the usual death grip on the wheel, wondering what it's like to die and istening to the moaning behind me, the Little Liza is on autopilot, the gentle wind is at our backs, BJ's reading some ancient and forgotton lore, and I'm scribbling my thoughts in a journal. I've heard QC Sound refered to as the Queen's Pond and today the description is apt. Sea Nile is within radio range and at Egg Island I made my a course change ... read more

Thursday May 17, 2012 Blind Channel to Port McNeill, BC At 4:30 AM I woke up, didn't feel any rolling so at first light we headed out for another try at Johnstone Strait. The closer we got the more the wind kicked up but we were hoping to make it to Port McNeill so we hugged the mainland shoreline for protection. With every turn and bend the wind got stronger and the chop steeper. Now we know what a gale feels like. Short, steep five-foot waves and a howling wind. We pitched and the bow would rise up and then almost bury itself in the next wave. We knew we could duck into Port Neville a short distance away but it seemingly took forever. There was no question of going on. Everything was getting thrown around ... read more
