After our night in Nelson it was back on the bus again - this time to Picton where we met up with some more of the girls, Joanne (another brit) and Delis (a kiwi), and got a boat over to Furneaux lodge in the Marlborough Sounds... home for the next 3 nights. We'd chosen to spend New Years here for a number of reasons... we wanted to be near the sea but away from the hussle of a big town or city (well, big by NZ standards), it's a beautiful spot, it was in the right direction back to Welly... oh and there was a live band playing for NYE!! We had a tiny bit of blagging to do when we arrived at Furneaux lodge..... Joanne and Aileen were late additions to the trip and by ... read more

Day 3: 21.5km, 6 hours, James Mackay - Heaphy Hut Today was almost completely down hill. Heaven. We were back in the forest again but as we descended during the day towards the coast and mouth of the Heaphy River there was a noticeable change in the types of trees and vegetation that we saw, moving from predominately beech at the start of the day towards and increasing number of nikau palms at the end of the day. A few of the girls were starting to get some quite evil blistering and rashes but we still made steady progress. Poor Aileen took a wee tumble at one point which, with a few juicy embellishments, made for a good story later. We crossed lots more swingbridges, stopped for lunch at the Lewis Hut and eventually got ... read more

I'm still playing catch up with my blog entries.... here's what we got up to after xmas at Collingwood.... Day 1: 17km, 5 hrs Brown Hut - Perry Saddle When I got up on the 27th December I was a little nervous. Today was the day we started a 4 day, 82km walk through the Kahurangi National Park. The Heaphy Track is one of New Zealands 'great walks'. I'd done a couple of great walks already but they weren't in quite the same league... first there was the Tongariro Crossing, but that's just a one day walk, then there was the Queen Charlotte track.... where a boat ferries your bags between hostels so all you carry with you is your lunch. This was a whole new experience for me - we were carrying all our food, ... read more

As usual I'm running behind with my blogs again!! Here's the update on our xmas adventures!! This Christmas was the first one that I have spent abroad and in the sunshine - and it was fab! The trip didn't start too well for Aileen, Helen and I who got thoroughly ripped off with the taxi ride to Welly airport (two english and a scot obviously sounded more like tourists than locals!), but that was more than made up for by the lovely taxi driver we had when we arrived in Nelson - he took us the scenic route to our hostel and gave us a running commentary on local sights and history as we drove along!! As the seven of us were all arriving at different times we'd decided that Ails, Helen and I would be ... read more

Am behind with my blog again... ;0) This is a quick update on the stopover in Hong Kong that I had on the way back to NZ from the UK. Now I know I was here in autumn but I still expected HK to be hot. When I've previously been to SE Asia in 'autumn' or 'winter' it's been hot (by my fair skinned english standards anyway), so I imagined HK would be the same. I was rather suprised then (and pleased I'd packed my fleece!) when I arrived to find locals wearing thick winter coats like I'd wear in the UK! Apparently it had been really hot a few days before, but for the three days I was there the temperature averaged about 14oC... really not what I was expecting!! I also thought HK would ... read more

It's been a little while since I've updated my journal!! I'm currently sitting in a cybercafe (they don't call them internet cafe's here) in Hong Kong.... but more on that later. Here's the quick round up of my last few months in Wellington!! I've been doing quite well on the cultural front lately. Helen and I went to see the Buena Vista Social Club, a group of 80 plus Cuban musicians and singers that played in Havana in the 1940's and 50's. I'd seen them 8 years ago when I was living in Cambridge, and whilst there were a few less of them this time (the singer Ibrahim Ferrer and the amazing Ruben Gonzalez and Compay Segundo have all died since I saw them last), the show was excellent. This time the show was based around ... read more

I can't believe I've been in Welly for over two months now - time has flown by so fast! Here's the shortened version of what I've been up to since my last blog ;0) After a great month in Golden Bay and despite being very tempted to stay a while longer, I finally moved myself on. I had a great last few days there - Chris gave me the day off so I took the car and spent my time visiting new places, such as the Kaihoka Lakes, or places I wanted to go back to, like the beaches along by Pakawau. For once the bus that I had to get didn't leave at 6am in the morning.... infact it was 1.30 in the afternoon which was actually quite sociable! Just enough time to pack and ... read more

I'm now in Welly but for the last month I've been living in the most beautiful place. I didn't really want to leave but it's time I moved on to the next stage of my travels.... more of that in my next journal entry but in the mean time here are the highlights of my last month...... I've been 'woofing' in a hostel and generally looking after the place whilst the owner went on holiday - essentially in exhange for a bed, food, vino and use of a car I've been doing a few hours work each day making beds, cleaning bathrooms, feeding chickens, walking the dog and chatting to the guests. Oh and driving people to the start of the Heaphy track in the 4 wheel drive. That was soooo much fun - especially the ... read more

There aren’t that many train routes here and one of the few in the South Island is the trip through Arthurs Pass between Greymouth (on the west coast) and Christchurch (in the east). I’d planned to bus down to Greymouth and do the train journey after returning my car to Nelson but having met someone who said that the road ran almost parallel with the train I decided to save some pennies and time and drive instead. And it was a beautiful journey - lots of driving through river valleys with snow capped mountains in the background. ahhhh. Eventually I made my way to Hanmer Springs for the night, a spa resort on the Lewis Pass. After about 7 hours of driving today I seriously could have done with a spa but arrived to late and ... read more

I wasn't quite sure where to go after my overnight stop in Murchinson. The initial plan had been the Nelson Lakes, which I’d been told were lovely and where I could do some good day walks, but then there was the alternative option of the making use of the car and clocking up some miles!! In the end it came down to a spur of the moment decision when I got up in the morning......... After Abel Tasman another favourite from our trip last year was the West Coast - I remember Sam and I were driving from Motueka down to Franz Joseph, we’d spent several hours going through lots of lovely green valleys and then we turned a corner and suddenly there was this huge wave that looked like it was going to crash straight ... read more
