The Killing Fields

We visited the killing fields of Choeung Ek, which are outside Phnom Penh. It was an ordinary farming area until the Khmer Rouge used it as a place to systemically destroy about 20,000 of its real and imagined enemies. Anyone educated or skilled was a major target: doctors, teachers, engineers, lawyers, artists. Pol Pot decimated the Cambodian intelligentsia, and there is still a shortage of skilled workers to this day. You can still see pieces of clothing and bones sticking out of the ground. In order to save bullets, most victims were bludgeoned to death. I tried not to walk on the bones or graves, but there were so many, it was pretty much impossible. Some of the graves have been excavated, though many have not, mainly due to lack of funds. Cambodia is a predominently ... read more

I was not really sure what to expect, but I have been intrigued by Cambodia for some time. To me, Cambodia is the ultimate paradox, a place that represents the absolute worst and best of humanity. On the one hand, you have a glorious civilization for almost as long as the Roman Empire and left behind the amazing temples of Angkor Wat (featured in the movie "Tomb Raider"). On the flip side, Cambodia was terrorized and turned into a murderous slave labor camp by Pol Pot and his genocidal Khmer Rouge regime (depicted in "The Killing Fields"). Although these are important parts of Cambodia's history, there is a lot more to this country than temples and genocide. We have been pleasantly surprised by what we have experienced so far. The people are lovely, very friendly and ... read more

Wat-ed out

We spent a couple of days visiting the wats (temples) in Ayuthaya, which was the capital of Thailand before Bangkok and a major port and trading center in Southeast Asia. Most of the wats and palaces are in ruins due to the Siamese wars with Burma, particularly in the mid to late 1700s. We rode bikes around the city to visit the various wats. It was hard to find some of them because many are only marked in Thai and our map was not very good. It's really hot and the sites are spread out pretty far, so we could only see a couple a day. We also took a boat trip, stopping at some of the wats that are farther away, and visited an interesting museum about the history of the area. A couple of ... read more

After spending some time in southern Thailand, we went back to Bangkok. We arrived after a 12 hour bus ride from Krabi. The roads are good here and the government buses are quite comfortable, but it was still a long trip. We actually started our journey north from Railay, a town with a gorgeous setting on Krabi peninsula. The town is surrounded by beautiful limestone cliffs, which makes it one of the world's foremost climbing destinations. Climbers from all over the world come to Railay to strut their stuff. I (Amy) tried rock climbing for the first time. I am already addicted and talking about doing it again. Supposedly, climbing a real wall is hard than in a gym, because you can't see all the hand and foot holds, so I think I did pretty well ... read more

Greetings to all. We are currently on Ko Lanta, a beautiful island in the Andaman Sea. Unlike resort areas like Patong, this is a very relaxing place with no touts trying to sell you tuk tuk rides, suits or massages. The people are so nice and everyone is very laidback. This is what we need before we start traveling in more challenging places like Cambodia and Laos. The islanders are mostly Muslims. This is the first place in Thailand where we have seen more mosques than Buddhist temples. There are no taxis here-the main forms of transport are on a motorbike or on the back of a pickup truck. The interior of the island is much poorer and less developed than the beach areas. In several places, people parked their motorbikes on the road. Not on ... read more

Arrived in Bangkok

After a very long and exhausting trip, we arrived in Bangkok and are having a fabulous time so far. Bangkok is chaotic, crowded, and terribly polluted, but I adore it. The city has such an energetic pace and the food is great. Thai food here is very similar to what you get in the US, but at 1/10th of the price. The vendors sell every kind of food you could imagine: fruit (including pineapple, papaya and mango, my absolute favs), stir fries, pad thai, soups, noodles, curries, etc, all cooked up fresh to order. This makes it very easy to engage in the main Thai national pasttime: eating. The other national pasttime seems to be listening to cheesy love ballads. If I hear Toni Braxton and that atrocious Celine Dion song from Titanic again, I'm going ... read more
