nice to read your diary I was searching about irkutsk and came across your diary. I am from Nepal but it was really nice reading about your time in Nepal. We need people like you to tell the world what is Nepal and how you feel when you are there. I miss my country but situation, time and ambition supress your feelings towards your country and make people to live in differnt country. Again thankyou so much for your true words about nepal...
Enjoying your adventure! Hi, Amy...glad you are having so much fun...I have always wanted to go to Nepal. I imagine it is very beautiful. Be safe and enjoy.
not surfing You got that right (although you'd think that after living in Santa Cruz I would have learned).
Looks like the comments are thin in the last couple of entries, but I know a few folks are following the blog happily.
Thai cooking You can find those little Thai eggplants at the grocery store attached to the Duangrat restaurant off route 7 in Falls Church. We've bought them there before and they tasted pretty good.
Well, you two will definitely have to show Ian how to give a proper foot massage when you get back! Perfect...
Also, we should get together and make a big Thai meal sometime - Ian took that same class when he was over there a couple of years ago, and it's really easy to recreate those dishes w/ the book they give you. Falls Church has a lot of the stores that carry the ingredients, although the little eggplants are hard to find. See you guys in a few months!
Great reading - what is the name of yr Guesthouse? I am enjoying reading about your travels. We will be in Chiang Mai in June - I would love to know what the name of your Guesthouse is and if you have any photos.
Cheers,
Bren
Thai protests. The Thais are not blindly shouting just to get Thaksin out as someone may think. We have many things in mind that have to be done after the fall of Thaksin. These include getting a royally sponsored Prime Minister, fair and open investigations into thaksin alleged wrongdoings, confiscating his assets if he is proved wrong or corrupt, amending the charter to get rid of loopholes that allowed this worst crook to climb up to power and that let him succesfully manipulate almost all constitutional watchdog agencies, investigating the watchdog agencies who let themselves be controlled by Thaksin and, as a result, failed to performed their duties properly and finally holding a fair new general election. All of these can be done only after Thaksin no longer stays in power. His prompt resignation within April when there is still no Lower House will enable us to invoke Article 7 of the constitution to ask for a royally sponsored interim Prime Minister who will see to it that all the mentioned house-cleaning missions are achieved. We are also going to petition the Administrative Court to look into the dirty and disgusting election on April 2nd. If it is found illegal and declared void, there will be no Lower House until a new general election is held. What we are doing is to derail not only Thaksin himself but also the more dangerous Thaksin regime and its political ideology.
Where's the Beer!! Been to Hong Kong AND Shanghi and I completely understand the comuticating thing or lack of once you get into the interior of China and away from any Hiltons or Intercontinental hotels!! You guys look GREAT, though!!
I'm so jealous you guys! How are you liking Lijiang? I was there in 2002. Will you make the Tiger Leaping Gorge trek? If you have time for a detour, try to make it to Yuanyang, also in Yunnan.
We are having so much fun reading your blog! Dear Amy and Stevan...I always knew you would go off and have a lot of fun, Amy! We are all enjoying your travel adventure, and envy you much! Tommy turns 16 next week. Can you believe it? We want to contribute to the beer fund, so please let us know how to do it! Stay safe, Vicki Chuck and Tommy Adams
I'm not sure if I can go there. That might be too dark of a path to go down. Incidentally, I've almost gotten the "beer with a priest" challenge down. I had coffee this morning with a Canadian Anglican priest at our guesthouse, so if he's around this evening, I might be able to achive this challenge. Too bad I couldn't get the chain-smoking monk we saw the other day to drink a beer with me.
Wow, I'm glad you guys made it! That is more of a trail than a road! Are you sure you didn't stumble onto a Francis Ford Coppula set? 2 Texas, not bad! So who's next on the beer challenge! Love the picts and your journals! Keep'em coming!
Khmer and Thai Styles You are correct about the superior ancient Cambodian achitectural style. Attacking and seizing Ankor Wat, The Siamese liberated themselves from the Khmer rule in the 1200's and became a group of sovereign states with Sukhothai as their centre of power. The centre later shifted to Ayuthaya in the 1300's. The Khmer civilization is much older and had much influence over the Thai's. This is comparable to what we can find in Italy and Britain. To me, British achitecture is newer, more vibrant than and often influenced by the Roman's but with less extravagance and grace. Perhaps the American Capitol building also tells the same story.
Congratulations I figured that you would accomplish beer with Texans, and beer on a boat at sunset should have been on the list.
We'll have a beer at the Ethiopian restaurant for you tonight. I look forward to the next installment.
Crossing the streets in Cambodia Crossing the streets in Cambodia...
Remember the Atari Frogger game?
Just remember to walk slow and steady and DON'T RUN!
Sake no sucky I swear I bought 2 bottles from that same guy last week (2/3/06) when coming back from Hong Kong/Bangkok. A lot better than that hot rice vinegar at the local Japanese steakhouses back here.
