Leaving Longreach was sad we really liked it there. Got the new Bridgestone Tyre and off we went to Winton and a visit to the home of the famous Waltzing Matilda. We visited the centre that told the story of the song and its origin. We decided to stay on another cattle station, this time it was a lot different,15k from town with a long dirt drive and the Watergate looked very odd placed in the middle of the paddock with nothing around it for miles not even a tree. Sam and the girls go into life on the station feeding [View Full Entry]

We made our way to the Stockmans Hall of Fame to learn more about the life of the original stockman of Outback Australia and how things have changed through the year until today where the stockman is all but extinct. They have been replaced by motorbikes, helicopters and roadtrains. Then in the afternoon we went in to the Longreach Station Store to board the Cobb and Co Coach for a gallop across the town common (basically this is a huge paddock of mitchell grass and dirt roads in the middle of Longreach), this really gave us a taste of what it [View Full Entry]

After the trip

Today was a very exciting day. We visited the Qantas Founders Museum and the Jumbo and 707. We spent the whole day learning in the museum and literally climbing in and around and all over the 747 - 200 "City of Bunbury". We went on two tours of the plane that took us from inside the cockpit to inside the tail, down into the cargo bay and computer room and out onto the wing. I think it will be the highlight of Steve's trip. We also got to explore the fully restored 707 “City of Canberra” that was and original Qantas [View Full Entry]

Spent the day on the road spotting wild emus, dodging more road kill and battling trucks between Blackall and Longreach. With a stop for lunch at Barcaldine and a visit to the Australian Workers Heritage Centre. A pretty little parkland setting filled with the history of the workers who settled and developed the area and our country. Samuel rode the train, Steve even found the local lockup while the girls got into the spirit of early life. I took the camera and got some photos of the giant tent that was placed there after the bi centenary celebrations.Came across a lovely [View Full Entry]

We left Evening Star early after saying goodbye to Tony and Trish, some people Steve meet on the Rappville range in June and they had made their way to Charleville at the same time so we spent a day getting to know them.We made our way to Tambo to get ourselves a Tambo Teddy. Tambo is famous for these cute little teddies . The locals decided to start up a business to create some employment in the town (pop 400) and four ladies came up with the idea of making Teddies. As you can imagine they got laughed at a lot [View Full Entry]

The Cosmos Centre by day was much more exciting with heaps of interactive fun. We learnt that we are very very small in the universe and even got to hold a meteorite. That night we went to see the bilbies. These cute little fellows are an endangered species because of the feral cats and foxes so the Bilby Centre in Charleville was set up to raise money to save the Bilby by two men. Peter and Frank spend there life saving Bilbies and raised enough money to build a 5km square fence in outback QLD to protect the Bilby and let them [View Full Entry]

We spent the day relaxing at Evening Star and Samuel got a taste of life on an outback cattle station, feeding the calves, ducks and chickens and riding around with Peter the caretaker on the quad bike. At 9pm we ventured into town to the Cosmos Centre for some stargazing but sadly it was one of those rare nights were the cloud came over so all we got to see through the telescope was the moon and one star. So home we went and decided to return tomorrow to visit the interactive centre in the daytime [View Full Entry]

Evening Star

From Roma we made our way west to Mitchell, passed through a little town called Muckadilla that only had a pub and a general store, outside the pub there were two seats one had written on it the “Seat of Knowledge” and the other the “Bench of Bullshit”. We didn’t stop to take a photo cause this town was that small there was nowhere big enough to park the van. Then we rolled into Mitchell to check out the Artesian Spa. Driving further west to Morven for lunch. We stopped at this little museum on the highway and the kids mucked [View Full Entry]

We left Allora by 8am, we stayed at a pretty road side park near a creek. It took no time to pack up, and we headed for Toowoomba for some shopping (Dannielle was very happy). Passed through Dalby which has a church on every corner. Next stop Chinchilla but we made a slight detour off the highway into a little town, or so we thought. Oakey is an army aviation town the base is bigger than the town. We visited the local Army Aviation Museum so Steve was also happy. Samuel took a million photos with his new camera that Nana [View Full Entry]
