Memories
It's a while since our paths crossed this way but your wonderful writing brings it all back. Good one. David

Spot on conclusions!
I got so homesick looking at your wonderful photos of sunshine and beaches and reading your very accurate descriptions of our divided state. Quite wise to stay on the coast and not bother with LA unless you know where to go, ex. Hollywood Blvd, famous yet ugly. I must say my central coast around Santa Barbara is the perfect blend of north and south. Have fun in SF, CA's best city!

Ocotillos and aliens
What an amazing trip, and what great photos through our spectacular, alien deserts! I daresay you've seen more than most Americans and most tourists, and camping is the perfect way to experience it all. Incidentally, that "alien, spiny tree thing" on p3 is an ocotillo cactus, which does look as if it should be on the sea floor. You were lucky to see it green; otherwise, it would have appeared brown and dead. Happy trails through alien lands!

Ack *cough*
I think if I were your mother I would not sleep whenever you left the house. Seeing as you no longer live at home that would really be tiresome. I love Toulomne and the Tamarack campground. So glad you saw bears. I'm guessing the whole eye incident cut out the chance to hike Half Dome. I guess that can wait until the next time you come. Yosemite actually has a nice little hospital in Yosemite Valley. Lisa had to go there the last time we were there. You do know that you could have called me to help you (once you got into cell phone range). I am only about 3 hours away from Yosemite. Still - you seem to have managed and pollen is better than gunfire so I think this trip is still a winner. And I have given up trying to take pictures that truly capture the scale of either the coastal redwoods or giant sequoias. BTW - it is Calaveras - not Calvederas :)

cooking
If you were trying to cook up high in elevation, that is tough since water boils at a lower temperature. If you were actually boiling noodles rather than just reheating something that was already cooked, that may be your issue. If you have a cooler with you then scrambled eggs and sausage is an easy meal. If not, canned precooked stuff like chili that you only have to reheat will work well. Beans and toast? If packing and weight is an issue then I bring raman - the noodles are much thinner and usually cook through though it takes awhile and are still a bit gummy since they only cooked in about 180 F water.

Excellent images--in prose and photos!
Your words are wonderfully evocative and your photos glorious! Glad you got back on your horse (car) after your fall and went on to enjoy the beauty of Yosemite. You dealt with the crisis with responsibility and grace--your mom should be proud!

I "discovered" your blog & I'm glad I did! I live in the San Francisco area and reading your blog made me homesick for 'The City by the Bay'. My son goes to San Francisco State... You've a follower in me and keep writing more!

About Starbucks
One last comment on this entry - Starbucks is really a Seattle thing. Go to Peet's - they started in Berkeley (better coffee too).

Alcatraz (and Alfredo)
Great blog as usual. It really makes me want to go visit SF and wander around. Considering my proximity, this is saying something. Great pics as usual - I especially love the TA pyramid/Flat Iron building and the beheaded GGB. I will once again argue for my fellow San Franciscans that most of the comments left on Alcatraz will have been left by non-Bay Area residents. Clearly, much of my beloved country is populated by variants of the "kill them all and let god sort them out!" variety. (Does variant imply variety - I think it does *sigh*) Of course, most of the rest of the country thinks we are nut-job liberal commies. You are welcome for the room and board - it was lovely to have you here. If there is time when you circle back I'll make fettuccine Alfredo and also homemade pesto - I'll even teach you how to make it if you want.

Thanks Chris! I just re-read the blog from the point of view of an American and it sounded a lot more insulting than I meant it to. I actually really enjoyed my short time on the east coast. I certainly intend to return. I'm too young to rent a car and get out of the major cities yet, but as soon as I turn 25 I'm be straight out to the National Parks of the Sierra Nevadas!

really enjoyed the post
Normally I read posts about places I am getting ready to travel to, this is the first one I've read about my home. Great entry. It's funny that I can pick up all these ironies about other places but tend to be ignorant of them about my own country. The accent part is funny, though I feel like shooting myself every time I hear a non-American speak, so let's chalk that one up to what we're used to. I hope you get a chance to travel more in the US, I think you would be surprised by how different many of the places are. Anyways, great job, keep writing.

& some fantastic piccies too - brilliant!! I've done a couple of blogs from that part of the world in the past, they almost write themselves as the scenery & characters you meet are World Class. Its a fantastic part of the planet that deserves more decent write ups than it gets. Keep pumping them out Westie. :-)
