| 18th September 2009 William HAwkins | Loved the place - From: De Grey and Port Hedland Hi I really enjoyed reading this page. I grew up in Southern Western Australia and have worked all over the country. I really enjoyed the job I had at Boodarrie and Finicuane Island except my supervisors did not keep to the promised work conditions and after a while I got sick so they sent me back to Perth and dropped me off the books. I quite liked the town and thought Boodarrie was a small city in itself and it was a beautiful place at night. The guys I worked with seemed to enjoy working with me and we had a mateship between us. I was so pleased to see some of your photos as they bought back some great memories of the sunrises over the site and some lovely sunsets. Once again thankyou for the memories.. Bill Hawkins |
| 17th September 2009 denise | - From: Final Days Hey Jude you will have to come in to work to catch up! Cheers Denise |

| 16th September 2009 Karen | Birds - From: Final Days We have enjoyed following your latest adventures. It was especially fun to see all the beautiful birds! Seattle birds are mostly dull ~ brown, gray. We do occasionally get to see a flash of yellow and red but nothing the least bit exotic. Fall is definitely in the air here. Our days are still 70 degrees but the rains are on their way. Ugh! It would be fun to know the total distance you covered. Happy trails! Karen & Spike |

We looked for the Welcome to WA sign that I remember from years ago but it wasn't there! I tried to pick out Aunty Jean's house near Penong but htere were several that looked like I remembered! Thanks for the comments, Mum |
| 24th February 2008 Thelma | The Straight Road - From: Gold Coast to Perth I found the photos of the trip from Ceduna to Perth brought memories flooding back to me. Nothing very much has changed since Errol and I used to try and make our yearly pilgrimage over to Adelaide to see our families. Except we did see Wombats, emus and Kangaroos back in those days. Where is Border Town ? I don't remember that place. And Norseman used to be where the Quarantine Station was in W.A. Is it not there now? The new car looks very nice and I hope it gives you years of safe travelling. I really enjoyed this entry on your blog. |

| 30th January 2008 Dana | - From: Last stop before home - back in Beijing Judy and Rags, A wonderful and entertaining blog that has inspired me to do some more tripping around. It has become a regular "fix" for me and I shall miss it. Your China travels brought back lots of memories and laughs, though it is hard to believe how cold it has been. Welcome home. Dana |

| 20th January 2008 Thelma | Luxury - From: A taste of altitude! Hi, glad to see you at last had a bit of luxury ! China and Tibet both look really interesting, but I have now lost my urge to go there. The sound of the food your eating all sounds like "Bali Belly" to me. Cabbage first thing in the morning ? Not for this ole girl! Looking forward to your return on Tuesday week, let me know what time your coming in, Love Mum. |
| 15th January 2008 Weggs | Flipvideo - From: The Train Trip to Tibet - Qinghai-Tibet Railway Hey, that looks cool! Why did I buy a new video camera- that looks better. See you soon and you can demo it! |
| 14th January 2008 Larni | - From: The Train Trip to Tibet - Qinghai-Tibet Railway Hey there You guys are brave...no leaving Judy in a taxi Rags!!! Take pics of the luxury hotel please Ive just received my new toy from USA, check out www.flipvideo.com L |
| 11th January 2008 Thelma | Knowledge - From: A smoggy 2 days in Xian Hi, looks like you've seen some wonderous sights, Jack said he hopes he gets the REAL goods on it all, (The Terra Cotta Warriors.) Nothing like the pretend words you play in Scrabulous.Howling horrid screaming lies you make up as you go along !Pathetic word choices for your tile placement. Whoever heard of using Acronyms!! Love Ya Mum |
| 10th January 2008 Weggs | Squat Toilets - From: Beijing Hi Kez, yeah, don't like the squat toilets, only use them when I have to. We have an "American Standard" toilet at the hostel and are centrally located so we came back to drop off our purchases and use it before going out again today! We booked into someting a bit more upmarket in Lhasa so will be interested to see what we get for alost twice the price. It's new too, only been opened since June last year. Loving China- could have stayed longer. Less than 2 weeks and we'll be home. Judy |
| 9th January 2008 kerry | hotel - From: Beijing Hotel sounds perfect. Having a freindly atmosphere makeds up for a lot. You want helpful when you are somewhere that different. Hubby would say as long as it's clean cheap is what you want. It's been a long trip and then theres more $ for other things (think shopping.. my thoughts :) ) The squat toilets would be tough. We done for surviving them if your knees aren't good Judy. So impressed by your wall of China visit. It's been an ambition of mine to visit it since I was in high school. |
| 8th January 2008 Weggs | Who needs luxury? - From: Beijing We don't need luxury. We need clean, bathroom, secure, free wifi, helpful and all inclusive. Luxury is expensive eg 17 euros for wifi at the Hilton. This place is like a family. There is staff on every floor and a woman guarding us on our floor and the woman at the desk greets us every time we come in or go out. cheers J |
| 7th January 2008 Thelma | beijing - From: Beijing All looks very Chinese !! When Rags was returning to the Hotel with your new case, I hope the trykes with the riders weren't your new purchases ?? The hotel looks very ordinary, hope it was more luxurious inside. |
| 6th January 2008 Weggs | Shopping - From: Last days in Europe Hi Larni Just got back from shopping - what an experience! We had to buy ANOTHER suitcase to put it all in! Rags got his jacket like your Dad's that he was after = most expensive thing we bought at $A25. I got a quilted one and a few fake bags etc! And guess we haven't finished yet! |
| 6th January 2008 Larni | - From: Last days in Europe HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Judy I hope you improve soon, it sounds like you have had a terrible run. Love the pics and hearing the updates Cant wait to hear about the shopping in China! |
| 2nd January 2008 Weggs | Hi and Happy New Year - From: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Thanks for the comment, Jill and Ira. Bugambilias seems like a long time ago now but it was a lovely place to stay wasn't it? |
| 1st January 2008 Jill and Ira | Happy New Year - From: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Hi Judy and Rags, We met at Las Bugambilias in August and shared some refreshments at the restaurant upstairs. We were just looking through our stuff from the trip and found your address. . We are enjoying reading about your further travels and the terrific photography! Enjoy the rest of your trip and have a happy and healthy 2008! Jill and Ira |
| 28th December 2007 Weggs | Thanks - From: Puerto Vallarta - Final Week Hi jenny Thanks for reading the site and commenting so we know you found it useful. If you hook up with the expats you'll have a great time. Try www.pvscene.com and the forum that has details of forthcoming events http://www.vallartascene.com/ Cheers Judy |
| 27th December 2007 Jenny | Hey there - From: Puerto Vallarta - Final Week Well, somehow I stummbled on to your site and couldn't stop reading it! I am heading down to Puerto Vallarta New years and I was searching for things to do. I felt a little like I was being intrusive on your site because I don't know you, but I feel like I kinda do now. I just wanted to say you did a brilliant job with the pictures and the descriptions, I felt like I was there with you. Thanks |
| 27th December 2007 Weggs | Return - From: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Hi Sandy, Have a great break. bet you were glad to finish work. We'll be back at the end of Jan so will be right for the next "Dinner for 8". CYA then Judy |
| 27th December 2007 Sandy | Happy New Year - From: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Hi guys, since I missed wishing you Merry Christmas at least I am early for this holiday! Looks like fun - too bad about the illness. - 6 sounds crisp but I know not really unpleasant although I am happy here even in the scorching heat with limited air con and no water in our great new cement pool. Never mind, I finished work today and I'm joining Neil and entourage tomorrow for the week. We are on our own for 4 days so looking forward to the resort down south. By the way when is your expected date of return?? It must be comin up soon. Somerville movies are in swing! Cheers! Sandy |
| 26th December 2007 Victor & Helen | Merry Christmas - From: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year And a belated Merry Christmas to you as well, Judy and Rags. It's been great reading your blog. For the past couple of days we've really, really wished we were there in northern Europe with you - you've probably heard we've had a scorcher of a Christmas and Boxing Day here in Perth. Not pleasant at all, lost many of my flowers, and not had much energy to do much other than sit inside with the aircon going most of the day. Oh well, that is Australia for you! All the best for the New Year to you two, and to fellow blog-readers. |
| 26th December 2007 Thelma | Amsterdam - From: Christmas in the Netherlands So glad you were able to see a Doc. and he was able to find out what your problem was Judy. I hope you will soon be feeling your old self again. And I'm glad to hear it seems a bit warmer in Amsterdam. By the look of the photos it looks as cold and bleak as Germany did. Perhaps I don't want to experience a winter Christmas after all ! Don't particularly want it as hot as we have had it either, but at least I don't have to go outside in the 41deg heat today to do any sight seeing. I suppose the shops are overflowing with their After Chrissie Sales though. Love Mum |
| 26th December 2007 Thelma | Merry Christmas - From: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year And Merry Christmas form Perth !!Sorry, no photo. |
| 24th December 2007 Weggs | Thanks - From: A holiday from a holiday Rags will be plaesed that beer is cheap. It's the same in Europe, cheaper to buy beer than coke or water. We are getting tired of the cold weather but saw that it's generally not colder than it is here. We are getting used to the toilet problem. wE saw one at the Stuttgart Railway station (i think) called McCleans but they wanted 1 Euro and 10 cents to use it so needless to say I waited until I got on the train where it's free! We are armed with antibacterial and tissues. Thanks for the advice Judy |
| 23rd December 2007 Larni | Vienna - From: Vienna - a revisit Hey there Have had no computer for a bit cos my charger died. Just caught up with your travels and Im SO jealous....Vienna! I love seeing the pics of things Ive seen too but yours are covered in snow! |
| 23rd December 2007 Thelma | Grim - From: Being unwell is the pits! Glad to hear that you enjoyed your cruise. What a pity someone had to come on board and spread their Flu germs with everyone else! But what would one do if the tickets were paid for and one had flown from some far flung country to do the cruise. A dilemma eh? Judy looks decidedly unhappy in the photo and the scenery looks equally so. Very grim and cold. It must be beautiful in the warmer weather though with all the green trees and lovely Germanic buildings. I hope you feel a lot better by the time you arrive in Amsterdam Judy. Not long now and Pat and Jack will be here with me. I am looking forward to seeing them so much. I just hope the weather will be kind to them. 38degs is forecast for Christmas day, a bit daunting. I will probably put my "Sit-me-down" on a chair and stay indoors for the day at Steve and Yvonnes. I'm sure Christmas must be so much more fun in the snow. Love Mum |
| 22nd December 2007 Weggs | Change of email - From: Danube Cruise No worries Kerry, travelblog handles sending out emails to the email you subscribe with automatically! Great to hear you are enjoying the blog! |
| 22nd December 2007 kerry | wow - From: Danube Cruise Loving every minute of your adventures Judy and Rags look forward to the next read. *note the change of email in your subscriptions list ( not sure if you have to approve it) |
| 17th December 2007 Thelma | Lanzarote - From: From Cesky Krumlov to Cesky Budejovice Did you read the comment Dana wrote on your Lanzarote Blog about China ? Beautiful buildings where you've been in Europe. Hope your enjoying your cruise. Love Mum |
| 14th December 2007 Mandys | Cold - From: In the spa town! Having just come back from HOT Africa, and we're getting quite warm here too, your holidays are looking decidedly cooler every time we look! How is the frosbite? I suppose the amount of food you eat has to do with keeping warm? Cheers and a Merry Christmas to you in cold Europe Love Lucy and Roman |
| 13th December 2007 Thelma | Good Eating - From: In the spa town! That Pork Knuckle looks good to me !!! The breakfasts don't sound very appertising, but I dare-say people living in colder climates need more than a couple of pieces of toast to keep them warm. Cheers, love Mum |
| 12th December 2007 Weggs | Tried tit! - From: Two days in Prague Well, I'll certainly fix that little blunder! Glad to hear you're still with us! cheers from rainy Cesky Krumlov Judy |
| 9th December 2007 Diana Brown | You still make me laugh - From: Two days in Prague Gee I have enjoyed following your travels but today was best of all. Have a read of your words under the Gingerbread pic. My belly is still hurting from laughing. Di |
| 8th December 2007 Moe and Colin | - From: Two days in Prague Pleased to see that you arrived ok at your next destination. It looks a facinating city. Hope its not too cold. It has not stopped raining since you left here!! |
| 8th December 2007 Thelma | Prague - From: Two days in Prague Well this all looks very interesting. I love the bridges. I knew there had to have been a bridge somewhere in the world called Judith !!I didn't just name my kids a "Fad Name". And it looks like you are having a feast, Rags, in that first piccie, I hope you didn't eat all of the food in the Pic !!I feel sure Judy's share is there too. Enjoy the cruise, love Mum |
| 5th December 2007 Thelma | UK - From: Last days in England Have enjoyed following your holiday travels around the UK. I am now looking forward to reading about your cruise and your Christmas in Holland. Enjoy it all, love Mum |
| 4th December 2007 Dana | - From: A holiday from a holiday Hi Judy and Rags, I have loved reading your very entertaing blogs, you must be having a wonderful time and seeing so much. I don't blame you for avoiding the swims Judy as it must be freezing, though nice to warm up at the bar later. Thelma asked me to pass on a few thoughts from China. I think the main thing is to avoid drinking any tap water and have bottled, even to wash your mouth out when you clean your teeth. If the water is a bit boring the beer is very good and cheap and you can buy it anywhere (not that I tried it for my teeth). It is not always cold but I think that the weather you will be in will cool it pretty quickly. The best wine is as good as our worst cask stuff and if you fancy some of this take a cork screw with you. I don't know about the spirits and if you pointed a finger at smeone to indicate a measure anything could happen! Language communication is a real problem Take a lot of small packs of tissues with you as toilet paper is not high on their list of prioritys, and anti bacterial hand wash is a must. Speaking of toilets the cleanest western ones were in McDonalds, but most of the others left a lot to be desired. I shall look forward to reading your thoughts on the squats. Always remember to take a hotel card with you as you will find it hard to communicate with the taxi drivers. I hope you have a great time as it is a very interesting country. Stay healthy and if it rains don't slip on the spit! |
| 24th November 2007 Weggs | Cold - From: Last Week in Bardfield Yes, it has turned quite cold now. When Rags was raking this morning he said there was some white stuff which he thought looked like fertilizer but then realised was ice from the overnight frost. We're having second thoughts about the cold weather in China! Enjoy your holiday too. We'll put lots of photos up of the canaries when we get back here next Monday. |
| 24th November 2007 Thelma | added photos - From: Last Week in Bardfield See what you mean about being cold. The photos are good though. Hope you enjoy your stay in the Canary Islands, it will be a bit warmer there. Will look for piccies when you come back, bye now, love Mum |
| 19th November 2007 Mandys | Lucy and Roman - From: A Taste of Scotland Hi there, glad to see you're still enjoying the delights of travel. Too bad that we've finished ours and having to look on enviously! Cheers! Hope you keep warm with lots of good warming tipple! |
| 18th November 2007 Weggs | Derby - From: A taste of the Lakes District Oh Dave, wish you'd told us there was something to see at Derby before we went passed it! We'd always love to stay longer in an area especially the Lakes District and Ben Lomond Park. Thanks for the comments. Cheers Judy |
| 18th November 2007 Dave | Derby - From: A taste of the Lakes District It was a shame that you bypassed Derby, where "Bonny Prince Charlie" arrived at on his conquest of England. There are hills of limestone where you pick up fossilised sea shells and the ‘Blue John Mines plus the plague village of Eyam and not forgetting the grave of Little John of Robin Hood days at Hathersage. Roman Roads abound in that area and many 7,000 year old Neolithic grave sites. |
| 18th November 2007 Dave | Been there - From: A taste of the Lakes District Blackpool? I was in the Police in that area on Traffic. Yes the lights are better at night. But many things are, I had a wife that was! The Lakes are magnificent and an artists delight. Spend more time in places if you are able. There is SO much to see of years past. |
| 18th November 2007 Dave - Mum's fried | Och! Away - From: A Taste of Scotland Lovely to see the photos. But - don't use warm water to wash off the ice from the windscreen! You can crack it! Scrape it off with a credit card (Expired) or buy de-icer from a garage. I know the Lake District well - pleased you managed to see it. Enjoy the haggis and the black pudding, Savoury Duck and all those things. Dave - Harold Hawthorne |
| 17th November 2007 Larni | - From: A Taste of Scotland Hi there Glad you made it to Edinburgh, you got better pics than me! Shame you didn't go into Glasgow it is very different but you cant do it all. Im glad the food is getting mentions, my cuisine page has had lots of hits. well it was hard to come back to the land of the living. We sat with two nurses who work in the Hospital at Blackpool and exactly as they described i think. They were gorgeous girls though that commuted there. Stay safe, keep writing xx |
| 17th November 2007 Weggs | Scottish Flag - From: A Taste of Scotland Oops, and I was a Boy Scout! Have fixed. Glad all well in Vallarta Jim, could do with a bit of your temperature here at the moment! Keep in touch. Cheers Rags |
| 17th November 2007 Thelma | Scotland. - From: A Taste of Scotland Well Scotland certainly looks a very interesting place to visit. Don't they call it the Home of the Brave ? I think I can see why now. There looks like a lot of climbing to me! But the views are magnificent that's for sure. And how did you enjoy the Haggis, Rags? I could have eaten the Black Pudding because I like that, but no-one here in Perth, Aust. seems to be able to make it properly. Did you tell that lady that made the comment about Judy being "A Bonny Lass", that it runs in her family ??? Pity about the cold weather you had, but I suppose it was expected. Rags you could have bought some Moleskins at the R M Williams store. I think they have one here in Perth, I know they have one in Adelaide.(I used to know someone in the Mounted Police who wore them all the time.) Cheers, Love Mum |
| 17th November 2007 Thelma | Lakes District - From: A taste of the Lakes District The UK really looks a lovely country, especially the Lakes area. And it seems you were there at the right time when the Autumn leaves were in full colour, the photos are great. Pam has told me about the Blackpool Rock. What did it taste like and do you think the English Lollie Shop at Hilarys would sell it ? Sounds like your having a great time munching your way through your travels. Did Rags get to taste the Haggis ? It doesn't appeal to me when I hear the Poms over here talking about it, but I suppose I would have to have a taste for myself if I was in the home of the Haggis! Glad to hear the weather was kind to you. Cheers, love Mum |
| 16th November 2007 jim | the homeland - From: A Taste of Scotland hola amigos... all is well here in vallarta. rosa sends her love. i see you are in my wonderful homeland. i feel i must correct you on our flag. it's a white cross on a blue background, hence the background colour of the union jack. i bet your perth is much more inviting in climate than ours. billy connolly says that you can spot a scotsman with a tan... that's when he stops being blue and turns white. loving this blog... we are hearing the true report on judy's attack of "turista" (montezuma's revenge). hope she feels great now. |
| 9th November 2007 jim | family visits - From: Catching up with family and other days we go back to england/scotland every couple of years to visit the ever expanding family. it's great to find those that you have never met. we are now in vallarta and very glad to be home. neighbours have told us how judy had the turista and poor old rags was not as accommodating as he should have been. tsk tsk tsk. all your old friends say hello. thanks for the great perth baseball cap. much appreciated. we live vicariously through you very complete journals. ciao jim |
| 7th November 2007 Pat | Icome - From: Catching up with family and other days At long last the Icome's history. Did you get information about Mary Ann and Charles being cousins, and about her father Thomas who was a soldier. What regiment and where was he stationed. Also where was Mary Ann born (High seas) tells us nothing. I am excited. If you get a chance please pass on the information to me... Pat |
| 7th November 2007 Thelma | China - From: Catching up with family and other days Hi Jude and Rags: the heading of this comment is China because I have Dana sitting here with me telling me about China. | 20th October 2007 Thelma | London - From: London for Chinese Visas How very exciting it all sounds ! The pics are great. I was particularly interested in the photo of Walthamstow. If my memory serves me right, that is where my Dad was living when they left for Australia. He used to talk about things in Walthamstow and the hard times they had. So at least one of his ancestors has trodden the ground he thought was sacred !Dad would have been so chuffed to know you were in London. Lots of love |
| 19th October 2007 Weggs | Trust you! - From: A day in Suffolk I told Rags not to inlcude that bit. Trust you to pick it up! Hope all is well in the west. We'll keep on having a great time. |
| 19th October 2007 Thelma | Floral City - From: A day in Suffolk If that is what the Floral City looks like in the "Off" season, I sure would like to see it when the gardens are at their best !! The buildings all look very interesting. So different from Perth ! But perhaps in a couple of thousand years we can catch up. Sounds like your seeing plenty and are so lucky to have a car to get around in. |

| 11th October 2007 Thelma | Croatia - From: Our last day in Croatia. Well your holiday in Croatia seemed to go very quickly, but you managed to give us a good look at the country. I suppose Rags would have liked to pack one of those ceramic containers full of wine in his back pack !That would have lasted you for awhile Rags. Hope you have a good flight to London. |

| 4th October 2007 Thelma | Dubrovnik - From: Cooler weather at last! Glad to hear you have arrived safe and sound. I bet you are enjoying a bit of cooler weather now. The photos are great.I remember seeing the Alps like that when I went over them, but I didn't think a photo would come out, so didn't take a photo.I dare-say you used the Zoom on your camera. Did you? What a pity everything is so expensive. You'll be noticing it after the prices in Mexico. Keep enjoying yourselves and tasting all that lovely food. |
| 3rd October 2007 jim | - From: Cooler weather at last! glad you made it in one piece. how many exchanges have you made for this entire trip?? how did you find peter and rachel? keep up the excellent blog, as we are living out our future trips through you. |
| 28th September 2007 jim | final days - From: Puerto Vallarta - Final Week sounds like you were hell bent to get everything all in during your visit. the bus driver did an unscrupulous little deed on your trip to playa grande. if you are the only ones on the bus and you don't know where you are going they will do a short turn and not go directly into the village to drop you at the church where i said they would. makes up time and you don't know any better. little bastards, lol. walk was on you, sorry about that. you will have to leave me all sorts of info on the people you have met. hope your visit was a good one. we are getting pretty excited about coming down. we have received another offer from friends to the south in barra de navidad to exchange for a week. check out their place at this site, www.villasantabarbara.ca ... yeah, same name as our place. drop me an email before you leave. cheers jim |
| 24th September 2007 Thelma | Final Week - From: Puerto Vallarta - Final Week Not long now and you'll be on your way again. I hope your able to send as many photos from Croatia as your sending from Mexico. I would love to be going to Croatia, I feel quite envious of that part of your holiday. The beaches look lovely in the photos in Mexico, but ofcourse no-way as beautiful as the beaches at Esperance. The sand looks a dirty tan in P V. Is it ? Hope to receive an answer to my e-mail soon, love Mum |
| 23rd September 2007 Diana Brown | And I thought my favourite colour was green! - From: Puerto Vallarta - Final Week I put off reading your events as I know my yearning will start immediately. I bet you haven't thought about us once :-) Keep on keeping on. Love Di |
| 20th September 2007 Weggs | Drugs - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 3 I don't think drugs are aproblem here any more than anywhere else. You often get a whiff of marijuana in Perth, just like here. |
| 20th September 2007 Weggs | Zip Lines - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 3 The oldest person they had doing it was 78 so sure you could still manage it if you wanted! Good to hear you think we both look healthy! |
| 20th September 2007 Judy Smyth | Sounds Like Fun - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 3 While the rain still pours down in Busselton, what we would give for some lovely warm weather similar to what you are experiencing. We look forward to reading your Blogs and what a difference they are to when you first went backpacking several years ago. |
| 20th September 2007 Thelma | Zip Lines - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 3 That looked great fun ! Not for me, but for you ! I must say you both look disgustingly well. Beaut. photos though . |
| 18th September 2007 Thelma | Cruise - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 3 Well the photos certainly showed how much you enjoyed yourselves !! It looks like it was a great day out for you both. Pity the poor blokes that had to have the Hand Cuff torture, but perhaps it may teach them a lesson. Are drugs a big problem there ? |
| 16th September 2007 Thelma | White Swans - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 2 Are you in for a surprise Jim !!?? I may tell you that we have beautiful White swans in Perth along with lovely white Pelicans. Perhaps it's because we are so isolated here that our birds are so pristine. By the way, our sea gulls are clean too ! |
| 14th September 2007 jim | pelicans - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 2 are you trying to tell me you have "cleaner" pelicans in perth than we do? those are fighting words..... i think our pelicans are worldly, not sanitized. if i remember correctly, aussies don't even have white swans, like the rest of the civilised world... harrumph |
| 13th September 2007 jim | musica - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 2 las carmelitas is indeed great for the best view. go on a clear night. the wee hairy man playing guitar in your picture is bobby tanzen. he is scottish. he knows me. if you see him again tell him you are staying at our place. he calls me jamie or most commonly ""scotty". check out destiladera beach halfway to punta mita. great for a stroll and swimming. couple of little restaurants. look carefully for the entrance 'cos it comes up quickly on a curve. it's under an arch on the left hand (beach) side as you head out that way. also bucerias is interesting. |
| 12th September 2007 Pat | Restaruante - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 2 Los Carmalitos is the name of the restarante on top of the mountain. A cover charge to get in but it comes off your bill. Be sure to go for dinner, the best view of PV. PS Take a sweater! |
| 12th September 2007 pat | OOOphs - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 2 I see you went to Salulita! |
| 12th September 2007 pat | walking - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 2 Go for a walk up behind town. See the tower on top of the hill. If you go up the road behind the Catherdral start walking up steps towards the towers. It is a great view when you get to the top and amazing to see how all the houses are linked together by sidewalks. A couple of great restaruants are Pippi's really loud and noisy and up on the montain top is another great one for the view, I have lost the name. You need a cab to get up there about $10 and make sure he comes back to get you it is a long way down by foot. Ask any of the locals for the name. Another, Not cheap but a great steak place is Argentina Steak house. We stay at Playa Esmeralda just by the Presidente hotel. Towards Missmaloya. Sounds like you are having a great time. I love PV, the people are so friendly, the music so happy and the atmosphere is so relaxing. Another great little town is Punta Minta at the north point and a little farther out is Saulita. You catch the bus down by the Sheraton or Walmart. Again ask the locals. You can also get locals to take you out fishing, snorkeling or just a boat ride to see the coast. The guys get a fellow by the name of Alonzoe in Boca. Enjoy your stay there I will miss not going there this Jan but will have a great visit in Auzzie land with Thelly, Judy and Rags. |
| 10th September 2007 Thelma | Scrabulous - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 2 Glad to see you taking it easy. It must be really hard to take ! My heart bleeds for you. By the time I eventually fell asleep last Sunday morning after our game of Scrabble it was 3.30am. My mind was all hyped up thinking of letters and words ! But I slept on in the morning until Steve and Yvonne woke me around 11am.By the time I went out to dinner that night I was all "bright eyed and bushy tailed". I enjoyed our game though Judy...........pity the best player lost !! With the company your keeping in P V I hope your keeping your back to the wall Rags. I don't want Jude finishing the holiday on her own. Rain is forecast 6 out of the next 7 days. Lets hope we get some really good falls. The powers that be are still telling us that parts of Australia, especially the Murray Darling Basin ,are still in the grip of the worst drought ever recorded. Bye now, love Mum |
| 7th September 2007 jim | rainy season - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 1 c and c (cuates y cuetes) is our favourite place for sunset happy hour. we know linda well. there is a webcam there so we can check on the beach happenings. ask them where it is and then you can arrange to have all your friends check in and watch you raise a margarita in toast to them. the jealousy factor is huge!!!! by the way, cuates y cuetes means "pals and drunks". since you are there off season quite a lot of the restaurants and shops are closed until late october when the tourist influx will begin again. by october the rains end and it will not rain again until next july or so. i personally love this season because vallarta is so green and lush. by spring it will be pretty brown and dry like the rest of mexico. have they started building on the lot next door yet? i think we are going to lose our jungle view out the side window. |
| 6th September 2007 Weggs | Mole (Chocolate Sauce) - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 1 Rags loves the chocolate sauce . Judy's avoiding it. The weight goes on all too quickly without that! |
| 5th September 2007 jim | home - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 1 hurray, rosa is working out. we haven't even met her yet. we have had some "difficulties" with past cleaners. i keep trying to call you there but no joy. is the phone working when you pick it up? sorry you missed maritza in guadalajara. quite a lot of our pieces there were bought in san miguel de allende and dolores hidalgo. vallarta is generally much too expensive to buy good things. so you tried chicken mole did you? chicken and chocolate gravy is not our thing, but you should try the red mole sauce. it is goooood. be sure to go to tia catrina's restaurant on the corner of pino suarez and francisco madero. near the local square by the pier. it is great. for a great local beach go out the back door and walk to the left. follow it all the way down to the water. then turn left and walk along the water around the headland to conchas chinas beach. very pretty and uncrowded. no shade there so take the umbrella. |
| 5th September 2007 Lucy | sounds too good! - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 1 I think that you have to be aware that you're not making a good impression on us poor workers - we might have to come over enmasse and check out these "poor" living conditions - do you take boarders? Love the choc sauce on your chicken - taste good??? Chjeers Lucy and Roman |
| 4th September 2007 Pat | Big Ears - From: Relief from the heat Those Big earred chairs can be rather hot, so best be you chain Rags to a Wicker one..Tell the boys to leave him be he is Judy's man. We stay at a condiminium out of town going towards Missmaloya. It is called Paya Esmeralda, right across from the water treatment plant. If you get to the La Presidente you have gone too far. We have a huge mansion next to us that has never been completed. Keep seated Rags that is your best bet. They seem to go for thin buns....Pat Be sure to go out to Boca and Missmaloya. Tom Cruise has a house way up on the clifts there. |
| 4th September 2007 Richelle | - From: Puerto Vallarta - Week 1 Chicken in chocolate sauce! Sounds... interesting |
| 3rd September 2007 Weggs | - From: Acapulco Thanks for the comment and passing the blog address to others. (Gail) I meant to send it arounf to everyone before I left but it was a bit hectic! Great to hear all's well at work. |
| 3rd September 2007 Clem | Me too! - From: Acapulco Hi Guys, you are doing a great job with your blog. Your entries are so detailed I feel like I'm there, almost! Sounds like you're having a great time, I'll have to go to Mexico now. All's well here, wish we were all there as well!! |
| 2nd September 2007 Weggs | Bronzes - From: Relief from the heat Hi Pat, thanks for that. We thought we might get some wise cracks about Rags and his big ears! We've seen some similar ones here in PV. Where did you stay when you came here? cheers Judy PS I have to leave Rags sitting by "The Blue Chairs" when I go for my jog. He reckons someone tried to pick him up yesterday!! |
| 2nd September 2007 Weggs | Food - From: Relief from the heat Hi Larni We certainly believe that half the fun of travelling is try new food and we've tried to do a fair bit of that. Mind you since we went shopping yesterday we've enjoyed a break and have preapred our own - but will eat out tonight! Look forward to seeing the itinerary. Judy |
| 1st September 2007 Larni | relief from heat - From: Relief from the heat Hey there You guys are doing heaps, love the pics of the art etc. also impressed that im not the only person that focuses on food when im travelling :-) Have really been enjoying reading your blog, keep writing! BTW Our itinerary is nearly sorted so i will definately email as soon as lynne has confirmed all the school visits etc, havigna bit of trouble as they are on holidays at the moment. |
| 1st September 2007 Thelma | Acapulco - From: Relief from the heat Well what colourful accommodation you stayed at there ! I find it very interesting but would I find all those colours inside the house "Restful"?What was the bedroom like? Where has the time gone, your 1st month away seems to have passed so quickly !You've certainly packed a lot into it though.Keep enjoying yourselves, and watch your back in Peurto Vallarta Rags, cheers . |
| 31st August 2007 pat | plegg@execulink,com - From: Relief from the heat The big earred chair rag's is sitting in represents the people in the gov't. There are many of those big eared buggars in Puerta vallarta. The artist felt that the gov't officials protrayed his art rather well. Was Rag's wearing the mask at the bottom of the page? |
| 31st August 2007 Diana Brown | I am so jealous - From: Acapulco If I had a magic wand ........ Mind you, I almost felt I was with you. Great feedback .... and still talking about food :-) |
| 28th August 2007 Thelma | Sounds Great - From: Acapulco This is one place that sounds really good and the views are lovely.Seeing the "Divers"must have been interesting. I think we've seen them on TV and think they must be mad! Let Judy choose the pics of herself next time Rags !! Must away, I'm in the computer room typing this and Students are beginning to come in. No Privacy and a lot of talk ! |
| 27th August 2007 Thelma | Late comment - From: A couple of days to relax! Just happened to look at your Blog and found an entry I hadn't I read. I was a bit worried about you going on the Cessna, Ken, the Ex B.A. Pilot has told us how the big planes are not serviced well enough in some of these countries, so when I read about the holes on the Cessna being plackied up, well!!!!! I was very relieved that you had arrived safe. Looks a very colourful place your in now. The Stall looks very interesting. It sounds like your well and truly in Siesta country.!Enjoy it while you can, love Mum |
| 21st August 2007 jamie1 | teotitlan - From: Oaxaca glad you made it to teotitlan. the weavings and carpets are truly amazing, aren't they? flying down to escondido is a good idea because the road is extremely hair-raising. especially if it is wet. escondido is very funky little surfing town. reminds me of the sixties. as for the bus up the coast. it may look like it's not that big a distance but it takes much longer than you would think because the road follows every indentation and height level of the coastline. very beautiful though.if you go directly through then you probably won't stay in acapulco, but if you do intend to stop there you should check out pie de la cuesta to get a room instead of acapulco proper. it is just around the northern headland from the city and it is quite serene. ocean on one side and lagoon on the other. |
| 21st August 2007 Noisy | Big Blow - From: Oaxaca Fantastic following your travels and envious of all your adventures. Hope you are well clear of the hurricane heading for Mexico. But I'm sure Rags and his refried beans has prepared you for big winds. Take care and keep making us jealous. |
| 21st August 2007 Thelma | Mexico - From: Oaxaca So relieved to hear you are nowhere near the hurricane. Everything you've seen and done all sounds very exotic and the photos are lovely and colourful. Will there be a bit of experimenting in the kitchen when you arrive home ??? And what price the fruit ? |
| 21st August 2007 Rod Murtha | Good News - From: Mexico City Missed catching up for a drink before you left. Rod tried to call but numbers were disconnected. Read your Blog yesterday. Looks and sounds exciting but didn't realise how close you could be to the Hurricane till I read the paper this morning. Hope you have gone to your next destination by now or evacuated ahead of the hurricane and gone to safer ground. Praying for you and everyone in Mexico. Typed you a personal message yesterday with some good news but had problems with the log on so i think i lost it. I spent ages typing it too. Jared proposed to Tenille on Saturday and she accepted, of course. Everyone thrilled. Engagement party at our place in about a month and wedding early April, is on the cards. Will send another personal message with the details and contacts from England. Safe and happy travels. God bless and keep you and thrill you with the marvels of his creation. Love, Lyn and Rod. xx |
| 20th August 2007 Thelma | Mexico City - From: Mexico City Glad to hear the meal you had tasted better than it looks in the pic. Can't say I thought it looked particularly appetising !!The pics are all beaut., it looks so different from anything in little down town Perth!!!What are the temps.like ? You look a bit warmer than you did in S F. Envied you the Bananas. I bought a kilo last Sat. for $5.95 per kilo, so they're coming down in price !! I thought you may have a heart attack Rags when you found out what was happening on the Share Markets, I think they made up a bit of ground when Trading started here today. Sounds like your both having a great time though, so who cares what the S/Market does !! Hope the ankle is still holding up Rags, look forward to your next update. Cheers |
| 20th August 2007 Pat | brewsky - From: Mexico City That doesn't look like the cerveza we drink there. Try some good old Corona with a lime. PV coming soon. Rags be afraid, be very afraid. Bums the word there. Find a wall and lean against it at all times, in the Romantic Zone or Judy walk behind him and keep an eye out. |
| 20th August 2007 jamie1 | bienvenidos a mexico, amigos - From: Mexico City in oaxaca make sure you visit the ruins at monte alban. have contacted my friends in san miguel and guadalajara. just waiting for their phone numbers, cos i lost them. we are heading down to chiapas in january so get lots of good info for us (see agua azul, canon de sumidero, san cristobal). que la vaya bien! |
| 14th August 2007 Weggs | Fruit prices and contacts - From: A week in San Francisco Hi Jim and Laurie Bananas are expensive at present in Aust because most of our crop was flattened by cyclones, one in WA & one in Qld. - upply & demand!!!! Please pass on your contacts, at this stage will go to both places. Tomorrow is the big day to Mexico!! |
| 14th August 2007 Weggs | - From: A week in San Francisco Hi jim and Laurie We have been writing our accounts either late at night or as is the case now it will be at the airport tomorrow! | 13th August 2007 jim and laurie | bananas!!!! - From: A week in San Francisco just read the comment by thelma on the price of bananas in perth...yikes!!! here in canada we pay the same as the san fran bananas but in canadian dollars. sometimes it's only 30 cents a pound. we are nowhere near a banana belt. why is perth so expensive for fruit that can be grown in australia? wait till you get to mexico. fruit there is almost a giveaway. |
| 13th August 2007 jim and laurie | time constraints? - From: A week in San Francisco so with all that exercise and sightseeing when do you get time to write such detailed accounts? i would be worn out and just settle in with a good bottle of california red. we spent some time at the inn on union square.. a great little hotel on the square. s.f. is a truly lovely city.will you get to travel a little outside of it, say to the napa valley for the wine? when you get to mexico, if you are planning to see san miguel de allende or guadalajara, let me know as i have some contacts for you. one is even an aussie. buon viaje.. jim |
| 13th August 2007 Weggs | New Phone - From: A week in San Francisco Hi Larni, we bought a new phone today. It's been an effort finding someone who sold triband phones that were not locked to a provider so we have the same nummber. We will charge it overnight and it will be ok for tomorrow. However prefer if you email your itinerary as we'll then have a record of it on the computer. (and we don't incur expensive global roaming costs!) See you in Essex! Judy |
| 12th August 2007 Larni | San Fran! - From: A week in San Francisco Hey there How sad about the bottle of scotch. Love the look of the apartment. Im very excited that you found stuff in the DWS and I can see you did the top of Macy's visit! It looks cold in San Fran. Anyway I'll keep reading this, let me know if you get a new phone number. We are nearly settled on an itinerary so I'll send it through when we have it. L :-) x |

| 12th August 2007 Weggs | You're quick - From: Making the most of limited time in Waikiki I only just got the blog finished. Yes, it is cold here. I think it was Mark Twain that said "The coldest winter I ever knew had was summer in San Francisco" About 18degrees c. Have a great trip J |
| 12th August 2007 Thelma | San Francisco - From: A week in San Francisco Love the pics. and envy you the bananas. Saw them in the shop the other day over here for $9.95 per kilo, so they're still going up in price. One of the first things I noticed in your pics was that you are wearing warm clothes. Is it cold over there ? I Leave for the South West tomorrow as planned. Will try and keep up with your blog while away.Have added to my blog and hope to be able to keep it going from an Internet Cafe. Stay well and continue to enjoy yourselves ,love Mum. Ps: Why can't we read the comments ?? |
| 10th August 2007 Thelma | Waikiki - From: Making the most of limited time in Waikiki Food seems to figure greatly in your blogs!! I love the photos, and Waikiki sounds very interesting. There must be a lot of tourists there !! Besides you, ofcourse. I envy you your time in SanFrancisco, I can remember seeing part of the Golden Gate Bridge as the plane landed when I was en-route to Los Angeles and thought how much I would like to have travelled over it. So enjoy it for me too ! Love Mum |
| 9th August 2007 Thelma | Very interesting - From: First Stop- Hawaii It all sounds very interesting even if there does sound like a lot of walking to a very unfit mother. The pics are good and it all looks very lovely. I am trying to teach Clarkie how to travel light (OMG) and we just survived "pack-dragging" (our special version of back-packing) Europe and India for 4 weeks. We could still learn a lot from u guys. V impressive minimalism. So where is the 'puter? I'M told they r a necessary item. How else do u keep the airport security guys entertained?? Best wishes for your trip. Looking forward to seeing where u go and what u do. Travel safe Blossoms. Luv J XX |

I know they hold special memories for you both ;-) I look forward to reading of your adventures as you go. I'm sure you'll have some great stories to tell. Just remember, if some woman offers to drive you both down a very steep hill while talking out loud to her late husband, politely decline. Warm regards Marcos von Windbreak. Go the Bike Boyz. |
| 28th July 2007 kerry | Organised - From: Getting ready Sounds like you are well organised. I like the fact you've left a bit of space for purchases in San Fran. All the best. Have a wonderful, fun, eventful( in a nice way) ,safe journey. Look forward to hearing more. |
