Hi again! Two Saturdays ago we made the seemingly un-long but actually long journey to Tokyo, Japan. All in all, including the bus from Buyeo and the train into Tokyo, the travel time was 12 hours, pretty outrageous for a 2 hour flight. Allll worth it though. Tokyo exceeded any expectations I had. I didn't think anything could tie Vienna but there it was. It is hard to pin point exactly what it is that makes Tokyo so special; maybe it is in the little things like the perfectly paved roads, tree lined streets and buildings, overall cleanliness, friendly people and eclectic food. Jonathan was pretty disappointed that there weren't any robots. The first night we made it to our hotel. We really lucked out because the hotel was in an amazing location downtown and quite ... read more

Hi everyone! I hope you are all well and trying to enjoy the summer despite the unfortunate bout of Toronto weather I heard about. So about two weeks ago Jonathan and I went to an EPIK reunion. It was held in Seoul at the Olympic Parktel. Olympic hotels are a little creepy minus the Olympics. We went to a performance called Jump. Its was a comedy combined with martial arts. At one point they brought Jonathan on stage and made him do some somersaults and such. I tried to film it but I was asked to stop immediately for some reason. Later that night a bunch of us went to the Zebra bar (Real name -Juju bar) that we had frequented during our orientation. It was a real full circle moment. We had a lot of ... read more

Gyeongju Two weeks ago we finally got to a place that I have been wanting to go to for a while now. It is one of the only touristy places in Korea outside of the major cities. Our good friend Sid was having his good friend Anoushka coming to visit him from Germany. Anoushka was wonderfully organized and managed to find an incredible guest house for us to stay in. It was this 100 year old traditional Korean style house. Complete with the super tiny rooms and heated floors. There were gardens and a common area in the middle with a fire pit and picnic tables. There was a common dinning room a shared kitchen and computer with free internet. The kitchen came equipped with eggs, toast and jam so you could make your own breakfast. ... read more

Hello again! So about a month ago Jonathan and I were taken to a national park on the coast of our province, Chungnam-do by Suk and Mi wa (Jonathan’s co teacher and old co- teacher, who we are now referring to as our Korean family). We had a jam packed day of fun stuff. We left at the ungodly hour of 6 am in order to beat the rush to this marine national park. The park was hosting a flower festival and it was all the rage. We got there at 8 and it was pretty busy. There were line ups to see flower exhibitions. I felt like we were at an amusement park. We quickly learned that all the cool flower displays were outside and as usual waiting in lines is for suckers. I think ... read more

Hello!! So I have been pretty lazy on the blog front. I feel as if I have more photos than stories. Perhaps the photos will jog a story or two. So check out my photos for details. Gym day was tons o’fun. No class and loads of fun things to watch. I attached a video of a dance the grade 3’s and 4’s put on. The teacher who choreographed the routine is a good friend. You can see her in the bottom left of the video directing the kids. There was a grade 6 race where they had to pick up a piece of paper and do what the paper says before they could cross the finish line. For example, take someone’s left shoe. So they would have to borrow some ones left shoe and then ... read more

Shanny Surprise! So last week Jonathan and I headed to the airport to pick up Mommy Peters. We were waiting off to the side by the doors, and forgetting that she had to go through customs, we ended up waiting a fairly long time. I looked away for a second and turned back thinking that I was seeing things, delusional maybe from starring at the gates for so long. When it finally hit, that I was looking at my sister, I screamed and then I believe I yelled “what the F***!” as everyone in the airport looked at me. What a surprise! I cannot believe everyone was able to keep this a secret from me for so long. Best B-day present ever!! The Peters women were together again! We took the long bus back to Buyeo, ... read more

The weekend before mom and Shan came to Korea, Jonathan and I went to Songnisan National Park with his two co-teachers. We partook in a 6 hour hike. It was pretty serious. After 3 hours we finally managed to reach the top. There was an extra 200 meter hike to a higher outlook. I thought, hey, I made it this far and now we only have to go down, of course I should run up there. Glad I did; it was a lovely view. Although it was a perfectly clear day the visibility was a little poor. We were told that it was yellow dust. Sand blows off the Gobi desert and ends up in Korea. It's called yellow dust season here. We were for warned of the horror stories of yellow dust season. Other English ... read more

February 27th 2009

Hello everyone!! Another month, another entry! So, February is an interesting time of transition for the school system here. On the second week of February, school commenced again and then a week and a half later it was finished and spring break started. Many English classes were canceled, and I started to forget I was a teacher (I kid). Just before the spring break I found out that my new co-teacher was an amazing teacher from Jangsu (the school I went to on Fridays). I was so excited because I knew her and she is a fantastic teacher and wonderful person. She also happens to have very good English, which is even more amazing because she has never lived in an English speaking country. I also found out that my original co-teacher was leaving the school. ... read more

January 27th - we departed for Koh Samui, a larger island to South-West of Koh Phangnan. Once we arrived we immediately booked a trip for the next morning to Anthong National park. It is a unique national park because it is a marine conservation park and it is a cluster of 41 islands. We inquired about staying the night because we had read in a Koh Phangnan guide that this was possible. Strangely enough though there is only one company that takes you to Anthong from Koh Phangnan and it only leaves three times a week. Also the fact that you can stay overnight is not advertised on Koh Phangnan. Koh Samui has many companies that can take you everyday to the park so this was a major reason why we wanted to head there. We ... read more
